I think I might have read this.... man, I typically have a better memory about books. Well, it was probably when I was in college and I had other things on my mind....

The book I read definitely had the time frame thing going on, and it had the soldiers being transported through space basically packed in liquid so they could withstand the g-forces of the ships evading enemy fire. Does that ring a bell with anyone?

Yes exactely this is forever war they re placed into pressure chambers flooded with liquid. A good Idea basically - the attempt at realism is one of the resons the book belons to my favourite Sci-Fi.

Matty, Freakinacage...

How we doing?

I\'ve read to \'part two\' and a little beyond.

Was Starship Troopers before or after this? They seem very similar (although I haven\'t read that book either)

I do like the \'military\' feel of the book, it does give it a realistic tone.

Its funny how the idea of \'free sex\' and a loose drug culture have spilled over from his real life era (circa early 70\'s) into the story. I wonder how he would have been affected in the era we currently live in?

COOL BITS

When I first read this book (over 30 years ago?) it was the technology of the combat suits that most impressed me .Especially the self medic capabilites of the latter suits ( dont want to give away too much just in case you havnt read the details yet).I havnt proggressed onto the last two books yet ,as I am still basking in a glow of warm fuzzy nostalgia,I am glad others are enjoying the literature :D.
GOD bless ..........VINCENTI

i love his writing style. best quote so far:

Actually, she was the one with the new trick. French corkscrew, she called it. She wouldn\'t tell me who\'d tought it to her though. I\'d like to shake his hand. Once i got my strength back

lol

just started the sargent mandella part. i\'m glad this book was pointed out to me (thanks adrian!) - need some more good sci-fi books. was actually halfway through \'the culled\' by simon spurrier which is also excellent

just finished chapter 7 of the second part. they\'ve just met someone from earth. a bit weird thinking about how culture has changed without them drugs, sexuality, currency. heroin available at the bar. mad stuff but oddly believable.

Me too...very odd how he has visualized the future.

I like how MaryGay lives outside Sioux Falls....A town which I have to visit next week for work...think I should bring a bodyguard?lol

it\'s the fact that the date is 2007 in the part of the book i\'m currently reading - just a few months in the future..

Well, I finally finished this the other night....

Very interesting. It was a good book and well worth the read, but I wish it had just a bit more \'action\' to it. The writer has a way of downplaying most of the events, which isn\'t all that bad, but I felt it lacked \'excitement\'. Still, I really enjoyed the overall concepts, and the reality he brought to it. Fighting a battle in distant space where manuevers are made by the light year is pretty far out there.

And I have to admit I was a bit confused by the passage of time. Not so much in the story, but just overall. Relativity is a hard thing to wrap my noggin around.

Any other sci-fi books recommendations?

I just listened to \'Foundation\' by Isaac Asimov (i had a long car drive)....another very interesting story.
