Johnny Depp, squirty cream oh...and prepping models

I was happy. Johnny Depp was advancing towards me with a can of squirty cream and a wicked glint in his eye. This is what Sunday morning lay-ins were all about. THEN....... my brain woke up, slipping my unconsious mind from the aforementioned delicious scene before me and... WTF.. Mr Depp was now carrying a can of primer, pondering the age old question of \"do I put the whole model together before I prime and paint it or after ???

This wasn\'t really so much of a problem with GW figures - but the Rackham ones always give me this headache. I notice that some people advocate putting the whole model together, whilst others seem to paint arms/weapons or other bits separately.

I hate trying to get the paint brush into those tiny little spaces - it\'s never a neat job and even though most people who look at the figure would never know there\'s a crap paintjob behind the figures arm, I would know

However, sometimes its also a bitch the other way. How many times have you painted a figure beautifully, only to try and fit on the bits and find that a) you get glue in the wrong place b) it needs filling which means you get greenstuff on your lovely highlights or c) paint chips off in the process.

I\'d be interested to see what results the poll gives or to hear what other tricks people have for getting around this problem

Well, I voted for the Mr Depp thing (mmmm.........Johnny Depp and whippy cream :innocent: ), but in reality only once have i painted a figure before putting it all together, and it was a complete pain in the bum. I did all the things you mentioned, glue in the wrong place, paint chips, everything. Never doing it again even if it means I just paint the semi hidden area dark and leave it that.

I was also too scared to go near it with a pin drill, so guess which one of my figures has to get repaired the most?

So you were dreaming about Johnny Depp\'s squirty cream, and then your mind jumped mini prepping. Sounds like the two interests of you life rolled into one!

Anyway, I choose both the first and last options. I\'ll assemble a model as much a can, but from time to time will leave off something really big like a sheild. However, in the end I think it would have been better for all of us if you had just gone back to sleep...

it depends on how easy it is to put the bits together effectively and how hard it is to paint if you assemble first. i\'m lazy like that.

i still think that you should go back to mr depp though

if i were to not fully assemble the mini, i alway put it together to make sure it fits correctly, i superglue and everything, then i disassemble, paint, and reassmeble. but i only do that on the ones that i have issues with when i try to completely paint all primed areas! some reaper figs. you dont have to do that with, some you do, same with Rackham but i tend to leave my rackham disassembled, because like you said, it was so hard to get in there, like in the Fiannas, ugh pain! so i left them unassembled, but i made sure they fit first!

Y\'know, many \"pretty boy\" actors are usually lunkheads, and not great actors to boot.. But Depp goes the extra step from just appearing in films to make them sucessful, he does his homework and I respect him for that... But what the hell was with the eyeliner in Pirates of the Carribean?!?! Oh, well...

I say depends on the mini, for example, I know I\'m going to paint Sethin one of these days, and there are two parts to her: the body and arms with the sword. Now, of course the sword goes over her body, so if I glue them, I won\'t reach most of her armor correctly. So, I prime seperate. I do fit the pieces together, but I doubt much spray will affect the pieces, the only thing would be to scrape some of the primer off with a small dremel or knife so the metal can glue to metal, and not paint to paint, with will flake off.

Unfortunatly, this can\'t apply to figs that reall need it, like the fact my tiger of Dirz\'s leg and arm are seperate, so I have to glue them for stability first! I believe I first started priming minis like this when I glued and primed my Mira (still waiting, of course) and her left hand and arm snapped off, so I thought.. Okay, I\'ll just be painting her torso before I put that back on...
You might even look into painting on the sprue for some peices, there were many times I wanted to rip my Tau Battlesuit apart when painting it..

i\'d say whatever is easier for the model. The only thig you need to look out for is that the two areas that you\'ll be gluing together don\'t have any paint on them, otherwise you\'ll just glue the paint to more piant, not the arm to the body etc. Paint on your glue area can really cause problems with adherancy. I always stick the model together first, because I live by the golden rule of : you can\'t see it, you don\'t paint it. i\'m just lazy

As for which comes first... I tried both ways on T\'Char, and neither works superbly for me. I think I\'ve settled on assembly first these days.

That may change, however. I\'m always changing my ways.

God, yes, I always assemble first, paint later. There\'s no WAY I\'m letting glue, putty or needle files near something I\'ve already painted. That\'s just tempting the gods.

from the looks of it, Johnny is going to be a very busy man, wonder if he can buy whipped cream by the case..lol

If the figure has many hard to reach parts, I will prep and paint them separately. A pain in the butt, but the mini cames out looking better for me.

Did you know that the word Depp in german means idiot?

I don\'t pay that much attention to parts which can\'t be seen either. Used to but it\'s really just a waste of time. Right now I paint Golborak, that Confrontation goblin robot machine thingy. and he\'s got lots of parts which are rather hidden from view and I merely basecoated them. All parts(arms, body, etc.) are painted seperately and in the end are glued together. But if it\'s possible I rather have the whole mini assembled beforehand. Nothing worse than having to operate on an already sewn patient.

I own way too many mini\'s and I game with most of them... if I were to wait to assemble after painted I wouldn\'t have any figures to play with...

Now I have \'broken\' a figure in order to paint it though...

Chrispy, the eyeliner thing was just right: they painted his eyes so that they can be seen from a distance ... just like on minis, you know

As for the dilemma, I think there is no right answer. It all very much depends on a mini.

Primer - definitely depends on the mini. If the bits are fiddly to get to, I leave them off till after painting (or at least till after painting the bit that\'s blocked). But, if it\'s fiddly *and* needs lots of greenstuff on the join - I attach it anyway and squint a lot while painting it.

It\'s easier that way, no dilemma, and gives you more time to daydream about dairy products. Oh, and the bearers of said products

Johnny Depp and whipping cream? Well, I like him as an actor, but I think I will just stick to the mini painting....

Mmmmmm, I\'m dealing with both subjects myself. I\'m dealing with putting together another dragon and how much to assemble first, and now you\'ve got me wondering which movie I should put in while I work on the model....Chocolat, Pirates, Ninth Gate? Mmmmmmm. Maybe all of them today.

As for the model, I\'ll be posting a bit about the assembly on my website, but I put together everything but the arms in the end. The wings and feet just had too much putty work needed to be stable and secure for handling during painting. The arms I did a dry fit with and they\'ll go on neat and tidy when everything is mostly done. The arms blocked the top of the dragons thighs and would make it impossible to paint the legs well and they\'re pretty noticeable. Once the legs and close areas are painted well, I\'ll attach the arms and finish up with the details when it\'s all put together.

So mostly, I should have said it depends on the figure and stayed away from the Depp thing...
