I am also shocked.

Another good person dies. He seemed a nice bloke and always full of life.

He used his fame to help the environment and educate people.

Rest in peace

Very nice guy it seemed, sad to hear this.

And to all the people who say: well what do you expect etc:

If you die tommorow in a car crash I might aswell say \"Ah well he was always using his car, it\'s expected eh\"

Stingray venom is actually quite mild. It was a 1 in a billion chance that he would be hit in the one place where it could do enough damage to kill him. Its even sadder that people in Britain, litterally the other side of the planet, find out about his death sooner than his wife did.

awful, and sad. he was a champion for beings that could not speak, and he died as such. i certainly hope that someone can fill his shoes, though i doubt it. i feel for his family. his exuberance was a beacon. RIP

I must say that this is possibly the first time the death of a specific individual I don\'t actually know has saddened me.

So many people on TV just don\'t seem \'real\' but Steve Irwin was not one of those. Steve seemed to be a genuinly good person with a big heart and I have received many hours of enjoyment and education while watching him.

RIP Steve-O.

RIP Mr Irwin indeed.
As MJP said one of those few deaths that rocks you without knowing him.
I\'m setting off to OZ after GD .
I was born in Cairns and am going snorkelling ad diving in the area he was killed. I\'m sure there will be some solemn feelings up there.A true Icon has been lost.
A well loved bloke who has captured hearts around the world ....The number of Parody\'s and comedy sketches of the character he personifies testament to his popularity.
God on ya Steve

poor old steve-o...I am a bit upset about it as well, I have to say. I didn\'t like him at first, but I grew to love him - it was hard not to like him, with all his enthusiasm, a real character! My little brother idolised him, and wants to grow up to be some sort of naturalist just like steve...he\'s quite upset about it also.

At least he went doing something he loved - and I\'m sure that steve would be the first to defend the stingray, and say that it wasn\'t the stingray\'s fault, it was only protecting itself etc.

I\'ll certainly miss him!

How pissed off do you have to get a sting ray to have it whip that barb into your chest? I know the stingrays here will only strike if you step on them. Bets that he was holding it until the beast felt threatened?

There\'s a bet lost. He was swimming over it and must have simply spooked the thing.

I thought he died or at least went unconcious instantly.

But to read today that he came to the surface and pulled the barb from his own chest, just sounds horrific.

He might of had a better chance if he left it in, pulling it out probably ripped his hearts to shreds.

Yea, I finally heard that today. I am suprised as every creature he ever saw, he had to tease and torment for the camera. Instead, he swims along and spooks a stingray that defends itself. I always figured he\'d be killed by some venomous snake.
*shrugs shoulders*

You dance and cheat with death enough and she will catch up with you.

I would never say he had it coming...but his luck just had to run out one day.

Before anyone makes wax effigies of me, I liked and admired the man...and his death is a great loss, but as the old saying goes, \'Live by the sword....etc

There is a valid lesson in his death.

Dangerous creatures are called that for a reason.

It doesn\'t lessen the impact of the tragedy, however.

EDIT....and I know the title of this thread is just a joke, but it seems a bit harsh. Arthur shared his view on the death threads, but I don\'t think he should be pidgeon holed into the pariah of them...

Probably true, but he has had too many good contributions to the site to just be labelled as \'the guy that hates obituaries\'

I never saw the show, but understand that while he may have tormented some individuals, he did so to bring awareness of the natural world and cared a great deal about the species he filmed. A well-known advocate for wildlife is a treasure that will be missed.

And it\'s quite shocking that it was a relatively harmless animal, though perhaps he didn\'t give it enough respect considering how unlikely it was to kill him.

Shocking and tragic. Like others have said, I always thought he would be killed by a croc or cobra or some other well-known dangerous animal. He knew that what he was doing was risky, and I would guess that he would have preferred going this way rather than dying of old age, or cancer or other slow, terminal illness. An unfortunate loss for the conservation movement. I\'m sorry, but Jeff Corwin is no substitute!
