Just getting back into painting...

Hello all,

I am just getting back into painting minis after an eight year hiatus. In the past I have been a big fan of the offerings from GW. Does anyone have advice for a painter, starting fresh after so long, who hasn\'t been involved in the local or online painting communities?

I would suggest using the tutorials on this site as there are tons of \'em on many subjects from the basics to the most advanced techniques. There are a lot of step by step tutorials as well. I would suggest following one of the step by step\'s to get the feel of the brush back.

Also I have found just looking at the old forums pages helpful as a lot of questions have been asked before. But don\'t be worried about asking. They are a good bunch (if a bit strange lol). Also check out some of the top artists work - great inspiration.

I\'ve taken a look at the articles and many of them are quite good. I did get a laugh out of the \"wargamer culture\" article. Sometimes I feel a little strange going to my local game shop after all these years :D

also, don\'t be afraid to try other companies. until i joined this site, i only bought gw stuff. i still love the universe and some of the models they produce but there are some companies with some wonderful (and often cheaper) stuff. have a look around. also, hang around here, cause its fun and a good way to learn

Welcome Mark!

I would advice you to look around this site (and others) for nice looking minis so you can decide where you want to take your painting, which techniques and methods you feel would suit you and get the results you want. There\'s many different styles of painting and thousands of articles and tutorials of different qualities on the net. It would be a daunting task to go through everything you can find, so you should try to find a way to focus on the things you think is most useful to you. That would give you a nice place to start at least... :)

Thanks for all the great advice guys. I\'ve never actually played any games with my minis - just painted. That doesn\'t mean I\'m not interested though. I just need to find the time and the right group (oh, and I have to learn the rules *grin*).

Speaking of an expensive hobby, you should try home theater. Painting is cheap compared to that lol I just have to convince my wife that I need a hundred little paint pots and an expensive brush that has about three bristles on it :)

I\'m still trying to decide what to start painting - I haven\'t even put my supplies list together (that is a job for this evening). Right now, I\'m leaning towards GW Tomb Kings and maybe some 40K (haven\'t decided). I will definitely keep any eye out for the other companies as well (don\'t have much experience with those).

Welcome to the forums, and back to painting.

My advice is much as those above, really.
But also to be sure to pick minis to start back with that, for lack of a better term, speak to you. Minis that all but leap off the shelf (or hook) screaming \'PAINT ME FIRST!\'.

Best to enjoy it as you get back into it.

I was thinking of getting started with a group of GW Tomb Kings skeletons. I used to paint GW Undead back in the day and enjoyed them quite a bit. I figure a box of cheap minis would be a good way to exercise my rusty painting skills before starting on something more detailed.

And with those Tomb King skeletons, you will also rediscover the odious joy of cleaning mould lines of plastic minis... I absolutely hate that task. I\'d pay a lot more attention to Tomb Kings if I didn\'t break out a sweat at just the thought of cleaning the bits and pieces for the regiments.

But yeah, skellies can be quick and easy to do. Prime white, wash with a suitably dark colour, then drybrush with bone or white. If you want to continue with Tomb Kings, those ushabti are worth a special effort when your skills are back. The bone giant and screaming skull catapult will exercise modelling skills too.

I just like the look of the army on a whole. I\'m also thinking of some 40K types, but don\'t really know much about the different factions of the game. Although I haven\'t played, I still like that the minis have a history of sorts. It seems to be inspirational at times.

Be sure to check out the evil Games Workshop website. They have all the info you need for 40k. Tyranids are the shizle...you need to join the hive mind....join.....(on and on in hypnotic mode)...

I went down to Tabletop yesterday and picked up about 19 GW paints, and a box of Tomb Kings skeleton warriors. Now if I could just find a nice place to paint, I could get started :)

careful with those skellies. I\'ve hear that they are a pain the backside to assemble, we wouldn\'t what to scare you off the hobby one more time :) Also although it wouldn\'t be touramite (sp?) legal Reeper makes a execlent looking gaint skellition/ bone gaint that looks very nice with the whole egyptian look of the tomb kings.


Ah Overland Park, the half way mark for the Minneapolis to Austin run... The memories :rolleyes:
