Just musing and....

I got dragged into larping a couple of times. I did it mainly for the opportunity to whack annoying gimps over the head with a rubber coated stick. I got mumbled at a lot about not pulling my blows or something.

I had one foolproof way of avoiding spells. \"WHAT? SORRY I CAN\'T HEAR YOU I HAVE MY EARPLUGS OF NULIFICATION IN!\" lol

I\'m an architect, and I also have a passion for the mini painting hobby. I suppose this makes me double nerdy (though I\'m not actually a nerd).

that right there though confirms for the rest of us that you are indeed a nerd :p

But surely it all goes back to the fact that miniature painting is not considered art by the majority of people. Despite the top 200 people (at least) on this site having more artistic talent and flair than most artists i have ever seen displayed, it is only viewed as a hobby. At least that is the way it is in the Western world.

@ Yramrag: If you\'re interested about the art or not question. Here\'s a good article: Is Mini Painting Art?

Hehe, I got dragged to some \"LARPs\" too.
It turned out to become a fight club with homemade plastic sticks. The \"Wood elves\" in our \"LARP\" (4 girls) turned out to be feared by everyone, if you gotten into their hands you were doomed. They bandaged one guy to a tree and forgot him! lol We found that poor guy after 4 hours...
It was real funny, because of the fact nobody took it too serious. Most of the peeps there never had heard of D&D or so and good part: nobody smelled (In fact when the sweet perfume of the wood elves was in the air you had to run as hell) Luckily nobody got hurt too. lol

The thing with LARP is that I used to do it as a kid anyway, only with sticks for guns in the woods. See? I was a kid. 8yrs old. Then, as I grew older and went camping with the Scouts, I would play games like Run-out where the idea was to hide from the other team and free caught members of my own team at the campfire base. We didn\'t need to pretend to swing weapons at each other and cast \'spells\' because hiding in the pitch-black on the side of a hill in the forest is fun enough. I suppose you could say that Paint Ball is only one step removed, but dear god I bet it\'s better than pretending!

LARP = NUTTERS.

The \"Larp\" I talk about was somewhere around 2000, and at that time we didn\'t even know that there was something like organized LARP. It was just a gathering of friends and like you said more of the feeling of these child games. But anyway it was a refreshing fun.

I would never go to one of those organized professional LARPs today, though.
On the other way, where\'s the difference to people playing every free minute roleplaying PC games? At least the LARPers are on fresh air, lol

There is a lot of accuracy in that statement. (In point of fact you could make the same statement about IT Geeks, or any other line of work where attention to detail and high levels of complexity is mandatory :D) ).

There is in the Gamer/ Painter a stereotype that we all seem to have as a mental image and to be honest over the years I have met faaaaar more than my fair share of Hygenically challenged people, and of them all what really gets me is the people of my generation who still haven\'t mastered the application of soap and water.

But lets be fair to LARP-ers the ones I know are Nutters , but let\'s face it there has to be a great deal of fun running around knocking the C**p out of one another with a rubber sword and getting tottally \"hammered\" at night.

Oh yes, Paint-Balling is great fun but it hurts like a Son-of-a-Bitch.lol

But isn\'t that the idea? Being hit OWIE, painful. Shooting other guy, kinda fun, in a sadomasochistic way. Not that I have all that much luck at it.
As for the LARPing. Tried it once. Half a day beating the heck out of each other with the swords, maces, and one guy even was shooting arrows. Great fun. Have this little girl that nobody could beat.
She had a shield that was almost as big as her and a morning star. So all she had to do was drop to her knees, put the shield in front of herself and whip the star around. Little Sh!t :cussing::cussing::cussing::D
Then someone started casting spells (and adding magic/plused armor and weapons and whatnots). What in the world? The idea isn\'t all that bad, but how in the world are you supposed to remember what the effects are if one, your not a caster, two this is the first time that you\'ve used \"magic\", three your in the middle of a fight with someone else. Oh well. Guess that I\'m not geeky enough for all things.

Oh, oh! I\'ve just had a thought! Perhaps, nerds are just people that have latched on to the latest greatest thing before the general population. I\'m thinking mostly technology stuff here. Take the computer and the internet or example. Only nerds had them/it back in the day, and ever cool kid thought \'what a nerd\', but look at today, everybody use one or the other! So maybe Nerds are just the cool kids, just out of step (time) with the rest of the world? ???

I will go further then this, NAS. ANY pastime that does not involve staring into a TV set, listening to very loud music or playing videogames is considered nerdy.

Pretty much at this point, nerdy is anything that 90% of general population doesn\'t do.
It is very simple, since imagination of that 90% simply doesn\'t go beyond these 3 above whenever they see something different they become immediately very scared (because they are unable to comprehend it, due to limited imagination) and, since all “normal” people (such as themselves) don’t do it they immediately pronounce it completely abnormal (or nerdy if you will).

Go ask, I am sure a number of people tell you that mountain-climbing is nerdy too.

Question, does battle reenactment count as larping?

If you use real swords, real armour, and just not actually hit each other.

I have several mates who would say a firm no.

And then back it up with a big hefty axe

Also whatever gave you the idea that they never hit each other?

Well, its not so much not actually hit each other, its just we train to not hit each other, but the blows are full powered ones, but we only work with a small number of actual attacks, so you can always pick what the next one is.

Looks impressive and full contact, isnt really.

But more real than plastic or rubber sticks

That is an emphatic NO! Completely different! Historical reenactments are acting out something that REALLY happened and trying to recreate history. You aren\'t riding on on a horse through a field saying, \"Magic Missile! You die!!!!\" and then hitting someone with a foam quaterstaff looking like a dingus!

:D I did help someone pick out a couple of horses to be trained for Jousting on the Renaissance Faire Circuit.

A nice cross draft mare for the jousting part all she had to do was canter in a straight line with knee pressure.

The other was a light weight gelding for melee combat, now that one had to be like a polo pony quick and turn on a dime.
