Normal flu kills more each winter mate.
And when the medias owners have lots of stock in the few largest pharmacuticul companies, don\'t be suprised when it\'s all over the media, it increases their share prices (goverments love things like this for burying bad news as well)

I had a ham sandwich today for lunch!
I thumb my nose at the swine flu.
Its a slow media week really, not much going on.. sad to say but the news media has been dieing for a event like a good natural disaster or a outbreak of something like a pandemic flu other wise they would have to report on how bad the economy is or something like that.
According to the CDC the annual death toll due to the flu in the USA alone is 36,000 people yearly. Most being the elderly and the young.
This is just over blown hysteria.

This strain is more deadly than standard flu. Not as deadly to humans as bird flu (percentage of deaths vs number who were nfected) ut IS transferred a lot easier. The other concern they have with it is that it appears to have makers from Swine, Avian and Human flu strains - it would seem our swine freinds are a little flu breeding ground.

Almost all Flu strains start in China and travel around the world 3-4 times before they die out. Each trip around the world taking 4 months.
Its used to take longer but air travel cut the time in half.
Each rotation is mutates into a new strain.

There\'s a lot of similarities between pigs and humans, which is probably why. We share a lot of parasites, too. The pig-human tapeworm is a good example.
Conspiracy theory again? The death rate is 2-3 times higher then normal flu (if we add all suspected cases to confirmed cases).
What is somewhat unpleasant is that all cases in NYC so far originated in a high school (St.Francis) where kids from my daughter middle school traditionally go. Wouldn\'t matter much, except that several kids form St.Francis work in afterschool program in my daughter\'s school and several kids have siblings in St Francis. So.... I am sitting here thinking whether they shutdown our school as well. From purely PH perspective we are talking about potential direct contacts.

the Spanish flu stared out small too, I\'d rather have a little overkill, I remember my grandparents talking about the SF and how a person would be sick one day and dead the next and they didn’t have the medical advances we enjoy now.

Assuming you keep yourself clean and don\'t rub raw pork into every orifice on your body you don\'t have much to worry about. Even then I wouldn\'t be clearing the fridge just yet.
It hasn\'t yet been proven to be airborne so all this wearing of masks is a little silly. Honestly, if it was airborne it wouldn\'t be as localized as it is; it wouldn\'t be just in one school in New York, it would have spread all over the city (especially considering how densely populated it is).
This particular virus is destroyed at high temperatures; read: cook your pork before you eat it.
Also, if you look at the recovery rate from swine flu it should be clear that this isn\'t something to worry about. Of those sick enough to be hospitalized in Mexico, two thirds have recovered from the swine flu.

Actually we still don\'t know much about the origin of the Spanish Flu. We still haven\'t been able to correctly identify where it originated.
The only reason it\'s called the \'Spanish\' flu is that Spain\'s neutrality during the First World War precluded them from censorship. Their press was free to report things like flu outbreaks and so the first reports of the flu started in Spain though most current research points to England or the US as its origin.
The censorship of news media on both sides of the war makes it difficult to say how quickly the flu spread.
We have to take into account that at the time there was a very dim understanding of virology and that agencies dedicated to monitor infections were essentially non-existent.
It\'s a fact that the swine flu is the same virus strain as the Spanish Flu (H1N1) but that should put us even more at ease. The Spanish Flu killed almost everyone who could not develop an immunity to it. Those who were left behind could. Us, being the descendants of those who survived, have inherited the genes that can impart the proper immune response to that type of virus.
On the list of things that signal Armageddon, Swine Flu ranks just below all that 2012 nonsense that will come and go without much afterthought.
Well why not get it from E.coli? Penicillin comes from mould after all. Most strains of Escherichia coli are completely harmless to humans and many of the rest just cause mild stomach upsets. It only becomes a really dangerous pathogen when a strain becomes resistant to antibiotics in the same way as M.R.S.A.
