Picard hands down, just because Patrick Stewart was the only one who could deliver those cheesy lines convincingly. But one of my all time favorite characters (from anything) was from the TNG series, and that is Q... who doesn't love Q?
As for Star Wars vs Star Trek, they both have their ups and downs, but the original three star wars films are by far the better (except for Wrath of Khan, that movie was the shizz). Ever since the prequels though and the animated garbage that's spewed out, Star Wars has sucked major balls. I will NEVER forgive Lucas for the despicable Jar Jar Binks....

I remember being quite young when they started sending TNG on TV here, I can't say I remember much about the original series other than what I've seen afterwards but there's one thing I remember clearly, I was infuriated with them replacing Kirk with some old bald guy! I totally hated it!

It's hardly a fair comparison. Kirk was a frontier exploring captain who had to face the unknown in unexplored space with little-to-no support. The Federation was still very young.
Picard hardly ever left Federation space, and when he did, it was either because of Q, or Westley Crusher. Maybe both.
The support network for Picard was vastly superior, plus he had a bigger ship that could break into two parts, so he could out-number the enemy most of the time, since the enemy usually only came in single vessels.
It's like comparing apples and oranges.
But, for the sake of simplicity, i like Kirk better.

Picard did have to put up with Westley Crusher. As well as other children. As for the ship splitting up, the saucer section was more of a escape pod for the non-combatants then a combat vessel. Little or no warp capability and no photon torpedoes, but a first grade. =)
