Kaltori\'s First WiP (finished pic inside!)

Well, this mini is almost done, but I just recently figured out how to set my camera to macro mode to take pics of my figs. I\'ve been painting for a looooong time (about 10 years, more off than on) but only recently progressed past basecoating and drybrushing (thanks in no small part to this site and this community).

The fig is a dwarf from the game confrontation that I am painting for my girlfriend. She absolutely loves dwarves, affectionately referring to all of them as \"Gimli\'s\". The pic quality is absolute rubbish as I need to build or buy a light box and get a camera with a timer on it, but I figured posting something is always better than posting nothing.

Pretty much everything on it is at a point where I want to consider it \"done\". I\'m trying not to spend a week at a time on a fig, rather using each to learn some new techniques. The sword looks much better in real life, the lighting that i have flattened it out quite a bit. Also, as I\'m sure you can tell there is a bit of a shine to the fig, this is mainly due to the lighting I had to use not being diffused. Other than that, I feel I\'m just a crossbow away from having a pretty decent looking fig.

Thanks to anyone that looks, any C and C is greatly appreciated, I just may not apply it to this fig and instead take it into the next I attempt.

Its looking pretty good, the only problem i can see is the camera is a TINY bit unfocused. so seeing the detail is a little hard. BUT! None th eless it looks great. OH! and for a light box, take a shoe box, and cut out rectangles on three of the sides. tape paper to those holes and VOILA! you have a light box. Just get three lamps and put one on each of the paper holes. and then. you just lay the box down on the side you didn\'t cut, the bottom of the box becomes a backdrop. and its good!

Gary, can\'t wait to see more. i would like to see a finished pic. also, your using GW paints? what did you do the sword with?

Thanks for the reply!

The sword was done using GW metallics.
- 50/50 Boltgun Metal / Chaos Black base
- Boltgun Metal overbase / hilights
- Chainmail hilights where I felt the light was hitting the sword
- Wash of 50 / 50 Badab Black / Devlan Mud
- Then I tried to pick where the light would be hitting it starting with boltgun and working back up to chainmail.

The result is a dullish looking blade that still has some glint to it. I actually really like the way it turned out, metallics are what seem to give me the most trouble overall as I am unable to figure out where hilights should go and then make them realistic. As I said the sword looks much better in person, the lighting kinda flattened out everything on it.

Thank you so much for the light box tip. Seems almost too easy, but I will definitely take a shot at making one over the weekend, hopefully allowing me to post finished pics that don\'t look like crap.

As for the camera being unfocused I believe that\'s because I don\'t have a camera with a timer at the moment, nor will I anytime soon, but I figured I need to stop making excuses about not posting and just go with what I can do. Also I think the pics are a little grainy because I used GIMP to bump the levels way up, since the original pics are really dark, but again, it\'s the best I can do at the moment.

I\'ll be finishing this fig up sometime today or tomorrow, and will be sure to post a finished pic or two here before starting off on another.

Thank you again for the reply. :D

There we go. He be \"done\"! There are a few more things I could touch up / work on on him, but I really want to get crackin on some other figs so I\'m going to set him to the side for now.

Thank you for anyone who looked. Hopefully I\'ll have some more stuff up soon.

You know it\'s funny you mention the grass. I was looking at these pics, trying to see them as someone else would instead of myself and thought to myself \"holy crap the grass is standing up!\"

To be fair I haven\'t dullcoated it. So that might be why.
