...if anyone has any tips on where to find pictures of original garments etc. I would appreciate it!
There are unfortunately almost no surviving garments from this period. As far as I know there are none of what would be loosely called \'field clothing\' or uniform.

Maybe not the red and white themes, although I\'m very fond of them, I just don\'t like painting with white (who does?).
What colour(s) were you thinking of then? I have dye samples here and extensive photo references to vegetable-dyed fabrics. In general you just want to use subdued (duller) colours, although the status of the person is important since bright colour = more expensive and would generally only be seen on someone of rank.
Certain hues are unlikely or impossible in historical subjects - violet for example. The only known violet dyes were
extremely expensive, and while you could get violet with combinations it doesn\'t seem to have been used much or at all. Here\'s a rough list of what you can play with:
white (not bright white like a modern t-shirt!);
buff & similar colours of natural fibres - wool, linen, hemp;
dull reds (orangey more common than crimson or rose coloured as these were more expensive);
earthy oranges;
dull yellows/ochres;
various browns;
dull blue (nothing too dark, as deep colour = more expensive);
dull greens;
black or off-black (could be brownish, blueish).
If you\'re doing heraldry it would have been simple at this period. Shapes would have been cutouts of fabric stitched on in a lot of cases, possibly embroidered for someone of rank.

I have started a new project. My goal is to paint this one as true to history as possible...
I should mention, this is not a good model for working towards historical accuracy as it\'s based on a Hollywood costume design!
