Knight templar WIP

Hello,

I have started a new project. My goal is to paint this one as true to history as possible, so if anyone has any tips on where to find pictures of original garments etc. I would appreciate it! Maybe not the red and white themes, although I\'m very fond of them, I just don\'t like painting with white (who does?).

Comments welcome!

Take care,

He kinda looks like Orlando Bloom in Kingdom of Heaven (awesome movie btw:p)

Awesome work so far, really great.

@ A Luna- It\'s suppose to be Orlando Bloom. Andrea has a funny way of doing that! lol. The movie is ok although horribly historically inaccurate. :p

On to the mini. First of all the face looks great. If you don\'t like painting white, (and if you\'re talking about painting a Knight Templar than that\'s a lot of white) why not make him a Knight Hospitaller, otherwise known as Knights of St. John? They wore mostly all black with just white crosses.

There are unfortunately almost no surviving garments from this period. As far as I know there are none of what would be loosely called \'field clothing\' or uniform.

What colour(s) were you thinking of then? I have dye samples here and extensive photo references to vegetable-dyed fabrics. In general you just want to use subdued (duller) colours, although the status of the person is important since bright colour = more expensive and would generally only be seen on someone of rank.

Certain hues are unlikely or impossible in historical subjects - violet for example. The only known violet dyes were extremely expensive, and while you could get violet with combinations it doesn\'t seem to have been used much or at all. Here\'s a rough list of what you can play with:
white (not bright white like a modern t-shirt!);
buff & similar colours of natural fibres - wool, linen, hemp;
dull reds (orangey more common than crimson or rose coloured as these were more expensive);
earthy oranges;
dull yellows/ochres;
various browns;
dull blue (nothing too dark, as deep colour = more expensive);
dull greens;
black or off-black (could be brownish, blueish).

If you\'re doing heraldry it would have been simple at this period. Shapes would have been cutouts of fabric stitched on in a lot of cases, possibly embroidered for someone of rank.

I should mention, this is not a good model for working towards historical accuracy as it\'s based on a Hollywood costume design! :)

Wrong period I think. Although with this figure it may not matter!

i think the st.john idea would look good

the history of st.john and the crusades are the only bit of history i no lol because i had to learn it in St.johns ambulance, wish i still went tbh

o and some stuff about ww1 &2 but thats pretty far past the time of the crusades lol

face is looking great btw can\'t wait to see it finished !!

sam

p.s out of interest does anybody on here go to st.johns ambulance ???

@ Einion- Yea with the figure I doubt it matters to be honest with ya. Referencing back to the movie itself, \"Kingdom of Heaven,\" it\'s suppose to take place between the second and third crusades I believe, correct me if I am wrong. (I did not read the book or else I would have probably known this for sure.) So he should be fine going with Hospitallers.

The events are all wrong, the names are correct Balian D\'Iberlin was an Earl in the Kingdom of Jerusalem.

Is a good site for finding correct heraldry. The Knights of the Hospital of St John DO have a black sircoat with a White cross (pre 1230\'s a black Capo, sort of monastic habit. Post 1275 Knights had a crimson sircoat but Sergent\'s still had black).

One thing can be said for kingdom of heaven, the equipment and dress was as close to realistic as anyone knows! This is from my mate the history teacher who has a PHD in Medieval studies.

Great answers, thanks alot!

On second thought I might actually go for the red and white, better to get over the issues with white sooner than later, and those colours are what I mosty relate the cruisaders with. To be continued..

If we ignore the issue of anachronisms it\'s still only \'some of it, not all\'. Detail freaks (the figure equivalent of a rivet-counter) can have a field day with many things.

If \'feels\' right, which is about what counts. But any real history buff of the period could totally shred it, just as with Gladiator.

Just as with most movies that deal with anything historical, not only Gladiator. Although really Gladiator wasn\'t as bad....300 tops my list for complete shite.

Tunic is coming along. I\'m going for that realistic, dirty look as of a knight who has actually been to the crusade for years.
, mud and blood stains to be expected!

Looking great. The colors seem a bit saturated because of the pic but from what I can tell the white is coming along very well.

One small baby step at a time.

White is a very tough paint to work with, but it sure is a good challenge!

Pretty much finished now, I just have to complete the scenic base I have made for it before submitting it to the hard critique of Cmon :)
