meh, i was smacked etc as a child. my parents used normal methods to keep me in check but on the odd occasion i went too far, my old man would kick my arse. i learned from that!! i\'m a strong believer in praise when deserved and a kicking when necessary!

the reason why there are no scientific papers condoning corporal punishment is because it\'s easy for application of force to be measured in such circumstances. it\'s too un pc to say smack a child as to do so would (in some peoples eyes) condone child abuse

Ditto on teh smacked (when warranted mind you) as a child.

And amen to the un-pc comment.

I used to get the belt off my granny, and the slipper off my mam.
The way I used to go on meant I didn\'t do much sitting down as a kid.

I think \"cut a switch\" refers to being sent to get a hazel branch or \"switch\", long thin stick and bringing it back to be whipped with. It\'s a propper old style punishment and it kind of died out with caning (and the decline in hazel bushes).

Ah yes, the \"cut yourself a switch\" approach to punishment. Very effective.

I fortunately didn\'t ever have to endure it, but my dad had to cut himself a switch many times growing up as he was raised in the country. If he acted up, my grandmother would say \"cut yourself a switch\". This meant he had to go out and find a tree branch that was the perfect combination of flexible but not flimsy, cut it from the tree, then bring it back to mommy so she could swat his backside with it. If he cut a switch that was inadequate, he had to go back and cut another. Good incentive to do it right the first time.

My step father and grandfather are visiting, and surprisingly enough, they were talking about the switches they had to cut.

Step-father decided that he\'d saw off a large branch, thinking his petite mother wouldn\'t be able to punish him with something so heavy.

Boy, was he wrong.

I think a lot of it stems from the age of parents a lot of the time...
I take the little one down to a play centre where there are approx 100 kids with guardians allowed to run crazy in ball pools soft play centres and such and it is a very interesting thing to watch ....
(@Avelorn anyone who is to study psychology etc should do it it\'s a strange excercise)
You tend to find the kids who are throwing the sand at other kids shouting and screaming when they don\'t get their way or badmouthing the supervisory staff and other parents are often (not always) the ones with younger parents (teen-low 20\'s) I look at it and think about how I was at their age and know that I certainly wasn\'t ready for a child .. There is a tendency as still being rebellious at that age to want to not be like their own parents and therefore act as friends like you say and don\'t impose any boundaries whatsoever in an attempt to be \"cool\" I don\'t place blame anywhere for that as really there isn\'t anyone to blame ....

regards corporal punishment I can only speak from my own experiences as a child knowing that merely the threat of the cane at school meant you behaved..I can only recall maybe 3 canings at school but that was enough to keep most people in school in line ..That isn\'t saying corporal punishment works just the fact that in my generation at that time it kept us in check ...
going back further to my parents and grandparents things were even harsher and they were hit with anything the teacher had present police were the law (my grandad had a scar on his head from a truncheon after nicking apples to prove it) now maybe this is extreme but at the same time they also talk about being able to leave the doors of their house/car unlocked without problem now they\'re not even safe locked ...not scientific but maybe there is something in it ???????

Its actually from a bush. A tree branch wouldn\'t work. Its too heavy and would actually be more of a club.

I had to cut a lot of them too. My grandmother would make me cut my own.

Cutting a switch and, in extreme cases, \"fetching the belt\". Certainly did not enjoy it, but I really don\'t think I\'m any kind of \"scarred\" because of it. Some people are just too PC to realize that, (e.g.) when your kid starts to howl \"but I waaaaaaant XYZ\" in the supermarket, \"just turning around\" won\'t do, as little as trying to argument: \"Kevin, please stop that, or mummy will be sad\" (actually overheard that one )... Don\'t ask, tell. And if words fail, a slap might not. Usually the kids (me included) got the hang of that learning curve quite fast.

I was always a good boy most of the time. and if i wasn\'t then my mum smacked me on the bottom. and if i was really bad, then dad would smack me. and if i was REALLY bad (which only occurred once or twice in 16 years) then i got the plastic end of the feather duster.
It kinda brought me up to respect your elders, and even now i don\'t usually go against my parents (as it\'s really not worth the trouble).

Demonherald mentioned that the kids with the younger parents always seemed to be the brats. For me it would probably be the opposite. My parents had me when dad was 28/29, and i was a (kinda) okay child. then they had my little (goddamn hellspawn) brother Alec, and he\'s a goddamn nightmare. Take my word for it.

I says spank kids when they need it. It has worked for generations and noe one died from a spanking. They have from abuse, but not spanking.
