[Larre\'s WIP] imperial navy pilot turns to the dark side! HELP!!!

larre,

the face is just not right......i mean this in the best way..... its purplish tinge is detracitng from it. it seems that you have layered the colors up too much and are suffering from chalkiness. yet again i would restart the coloring on it. the problem that many have on skin tone is that they push the colors on the face too much.... i feel this is what is happening to your piece. on the jerkin everything blends nicely and it is ovious the blending shows that. however you kept trying to add more and more layers to something as small as a face. as many have said before, the simpler the better.....and easier. i would reccomend starting over with a tanned flesh base, then up to dwarf flesh and then finally an elf flesh mixed with ghostly grey and finally a slight wash or glaze of purple ink. start the eyes over as black and go from their.

i find that if you slow things down and make them simpler your mini can look much better. after all, the mini\'s we paint are all just an illusion, i am sure if someone could find a way to paint as perfectly as master painters with only two to three layers they would.

just something to consider. hope it helps.

cheers

I have made my decision... I will strip him, remove him from his base and start over... after all, I payed for him, so I won\'t just give up on him like that... one thing is for sure! I do not abandong my friends :(

Sorry you had to do that mate....but perhaps it\'s for the best :) You\'ll be able to use the experience and know what to avoid and it\'ll turn out a lot better than it might have done...anyway, looking forward to seeing what you do this time round ;) My main advice would to be to take it more slowly...have more breaks from painting so you can see the bigger picture...also it prevents you from rushing areas :)

Cheers,
Tom

okay, so now I have practicly restarted on this mini, I\'ve gone back to the conversion, replaced his icon with a gun, put him on a smaller base, and I\'ve resculpted his back (wich you cant see in this picture)

anyways, here\'s the updates, I\'m actually quite pleased with the result of the face this time, anyway, here\'s the pic :)

Sorry dude, but I have to say I think the icon looked much better than the gun. The positioning of his arm and the way the fingers are wrapped around doesn\'t really suit a firearm. If you\'d given him a dagger as a weapon, pointing down towards the torso that he\'s carrying then it could perhaps have fitted the position better and worked in terms of the mini\'s narrative, but the gun, I\'m just not down with it.

The painting on the face does look pretty good, but I have to agree with Nima, he\'s rather friendly looking. As you have worked blue into his skintones already, and it\'s also not the scariest looking eye colour, how about working a more menacing tone into his pupils?

The way the head is sculpted it really looks like Peter Weller from robocop.:p

I\'d give him a rougher, unshaven look to detract from his Cher like cheekbones.

okay, I thought the gun thingy would represent him changing the mag, you see the little thing sticking out under the handle. and I will scult a small.. wire... thing around his fingre, the one that covers the trigger :p

I also though I should make him look pale, and I used the blueish colour based on Seb perbets demon on daemonic mount (in WD and Gold in open... 2003 I think)

but I\'ll thing about giving him back his banner, anyways, more ppl of CMON! tell me what ya think!

Perhaps a chaos symbol somewhere on his forehead in a red to give the effect it was painted on with blood, maybe a dagger in his hand too and the banner sticking out of the ground behind him. It would remind me of a sacrificial scene. Just a thought but I like how you\'ve converted and painted it so far :)

Face looks really nice now! Nice and pallid...

Trouser legs looking good, the base makes a lot more sense now (e.g. the demon host rests on the metal thingy...damn, can\'t remember what it\'s called! :drunk: ).

What bugs me about the gun is that it looks \'out of scale\'. Although technically the pilot is made for WH40K and therefore the same scale, it is \'truer\' to scale than the normal models GW makes i.e. the model is smaller and more finely detailed. This is why I think the gun looks a bit too big for him...maybe you could make your own one? Or maybe even give him three metal claws attached to his hand gauntlet for one kickass knuckleduster! lol

Anyway, look forward to more progress as always ;)

Cheers,
Tom

Yeah, how about giving a scissor-hand to him? Then it would look as if he\'d just \"pruned\" Mr. Tentaclehead lol

hey! that\'s not a bad Idea Tom!

I\'ll think about that :)

anyways, I like what you said (can\'t remmber the name, last post on page 2) about having the banner sticking out of the ground :)

I have some thinking to do ;)

Maybe you could replace the gun in his right hand with a medallion shaped to look like the chaos undivided symbol with a chain hanging down. Turn his head to look at it like the pilot pulled the necklace/icon off of the demon and is studying or contemplating what it represents. That might represent his \"turn\" to the dark side in a subtle way.

The painting is much better than the previous one, I think the gun is a little out of place as it looks like he was doing some hand to hand fighting what with the dismembered demon and all. Another highlight on the red would help make it pop.

Keep up the good work and don\'t be afraid to try something new.

Really not keen on the gun arm, think you should have kept the banner - much better IMO

Like the base motif, but its a wee bit wonky. Have you glued it on yet?

Ditto with Matty\'s post.

Would love close-ups. Larre, are you planning on adding some contrast in the face? If the forehead were broken up a little it would look much better.

Without the banner, I think that some other sort of chaos icon would help it be easier to understand. A pistol might fit better than the submachine gun. If you keep the gun, maybe it would read better if you painted a bullet hole in the demon\'s forehead and/or torso.

I agree with the posts above about the face needing more contrast. The banner seemed to work better than the gun (the pilot discarded his issued weapon in favor of a chaos artifact).

Don\'t give up! I\'m looking forward to seeing what you do with it next.
