Lest we Forget

I bought this miniature at Salute because of Mike, where it was being sold for a soldiers charity. I thought I'd paint it as a display piece inbetween commisions and things, and realised that it is a really lovely sculpt, clean and sharp and nicely detailed. The plinth was scratchbuilt from balsa wood and plasticard, and the base consists otherwise of milliput, iron oxide for the rocks and a balsa wood cross. I wanted to make a bit of a sad scene I suppse, the war is over and while he isn't dead, his fellow soldier is. I painted it with quite a rigit zenithal lighting scheme, made possible by some light pre-highlighting with an airbrush, which determined the highlights to a degree. The reason I didn't paint on any unit markings is that that would have contrained him to a specific group, whereas I wanted him to be more of a representation of the soldiers as a whole. All in all it was a fantastic piece to work on, even if the poppies drove me up the bloody wall. And I hope you all like it.

Dolce et decorum est and all that

Essentially, I used foam flock, and plant stems, although if you have any suitably thin wire, that's probably better. I then coated the stems in superglue for rigidity, and cut some of the foam into shape, then put glue on the end of the stem, and stabbed it gently into the holes in the foam, then painted it.

Thanks for the votes and comments folks:)

Because of you and your paint job I have been and ordered a couple of these myself. But I don't mind as the mini is excellent and it is for a good cause. Had I more available cash I would have bought a load and passed them around to a few mates.

Nice one Ari.
Simple and effective, exactly as it should be.

I\'ve painted one of mine and gave it to my dad as a present, as he also supports Combat Stress.

All I can say is this is a very comfortable mini to paint, nicely sculpted and with almost no flash or mould lines.

Realy nice work there. I like the mood of this mini.

Since you mentioned pre-highlighting with an airbrush could you give me some more info on it? I guess you spray the highlight from the direction the light is falling but other than that I have no idea how it\'s done. ???

Not that you\'re getting away with only one request though... :D

I \'d also like to know where can I get this mini. I was in Salute but with so many stands it\'s easy to miss something.

And one last request... you have any close ups of the poppies?

I think I\'ve troubled you enough so I\'ll stop here. lol

The pre-highlighting was really just a light spray from above (over a black undercoat) with some codex grey, and then some white. Gripping Beast sells these, and there are apparently more coming over the coming months. The poppie pic will have to wait though, hehe.

Thanks for all the votes and comments people, it\'s a full .4 over my deamon winner at the moment :D

Thanks for your help squig hunter! Now I am able to buy yet another mini to add to my ever growing to-paint list.

I may try pre-highlighting some time. I have my airbrush and compressor for 3 years and only used it to paint one vehicle and for varnishing.

Granddad!
nice one squiggy

You could have made it easier on yourself making the poppies with the Flower Soft stuff

it\'s used in card making, so check out your local crafting shops
