I bought this miniature at Salute because of Mike, where it was being sold for a soldiers charity. I thought I'd paint it as a display piece inbetween commisions and things, and realised that it is a really lovely sculpt, clean and sharp and nicely detailed. The plinth was scratchbuilt from balsa wood and plasticard, and the base consists otherwise of milliput, iron oxide for the rocks and a balsa wood cross. I wanted to make a bit of a sad scene I suppse, the war is over and while he isn't dead, his fellow soldier is. I painted it with quite a rigit zenithal lighting scheme, made possible by some light pre-highlighting with an airbrush, which determined the highlights to a degree. The reason I didn't paint on any unit markings is that that would have contrained him to a specific group, whereas I wanted him to be more of a representation of the soldiers as a whole. All in all it was a fantastic piece to work on, even if the poppies drove me up the bloody wall. And I hope you all like it.
