LGS in Amsterdam?

I\'m going to Amsterdam early next week. It\'s not a fun visit, my old grandmother has just passed away and I wish to be there for her funeral.

I\'m taking my 10 year old son with me (at his request) and I figured that we\'d spend a day seeing the sights, since he\'s never been there before.

Does anyone know of a good game shop in Amsterdam? One that stocks a good range of figures, Rackham, Spyglass, etc?

I have been to Holland and no I did not use the phone book. You have me curious. What\'s so odd-difficult about their phone book?? ???

Now, don\'t hang me up on this, I\'ve tried unsuccessfully to use the book and thrown it in dismay, so this is not a full study.....

Towns are grouped together in a common phone book...geographically? ...according to phone system?... somehow, in any case. To find the phone number of a certain party, you have to know the town/city they\'re living in and look them up there. If you\'re not sure EXACTLY where they\'re living, as an unitiated, you\'re up shit\'s creek. (pardon my colloquial expression.)

My old grandmother (god rest her soul) lived in Heemstede, west of Amsterdam, where it\'s said the best Dutch is spoken (no offense, Ming). Trying to find her telephone number one time when arriving at the train station in Haarlem.... well, it didn\'t happen. Couldn\'t navigate the book. Ended up taking a taxi to the house... taxidriver had problems too just finding the place.

Well, maybe I\'m just out of tune with that particular part of the universe.

Truth is, though, I never tried the yellow pages....hmmm....

Hi,

I live in the Netherlands (near Ming-Hua in fact) and honestly I can\'t say I saw any miniatures anywhere in the Netherlands (Amsterdam included) besides games workshop and Mage Knight (there are relatively easy to get) and the odd Ral Partha if some store happens to have a box there to ramage through (only saw that twice). That\'s about it. The Netherlands sure ain\'t a miniature heaven (which I think is a shame seeing I have to get all my miniatures online or from conventions).

Maybe Ming-Hua knows more than I know.. but I doubt it seeing I\'ve been bugging him for information before ;)

As to stores in Amsterdam, or stores that carry anything but GW over here, I can\'t think of any apart from Nijmegen and Utrecht which is on the other side of the country. You can forget about Spyglass by the way.
Tammy may know since she\'s been there recently.

If it still exists:
Sir Ludemus House of Games, Kinkerstraat 16, Amsterdam (they are not in the phonebook)
Gamekeeper Spellenspecialist, The
Hartenstr 14, 1016CB Amsterdam (may not have miniatures)

These could be nice to visit. No miniatures though.

I think the problem was that you didn\'t find the right phonebook. The country is divided in areas which usually consists of a large city (or several) and all towns around it. So you need to know what book to look in. In the book the towns are listed alphabetically. The only problem there is when a town is actually part of another town. Like Dommelen is part of Valkenswaard. While Dommelen can be used for postal addresses it is not listed as such in the phonebook since it\'s not an independent town.

Because of the size of the country and the fact that few places carry all phonebooks of the Netherlands it\'s easiest to check on Internet: www.telefoongids.nl and www.goudengids.nl

Thank you. She was very old and her condition was very bad. It was her time to go.

She bought me my first bicycle and taught me how to put worms on hooks.

Thank you both for the information about the stores. I\'ll be looking them up and be sure to give a report (existing/nonexisting, minis/no minis).

I\'ll also give the phonebook another shot....

Sorry to hear about yor grandmother as well. I hope she had a good life.

I\'ll try to clarify some of the above,

1. Sir Ludemus: Been gone for ages. It was a nice shop but had difficulties trying to actually making a living. (that\'s what I\'ve been told...)

2. Game Keeper: Used to sell GW product but nowadays they only sell Magic and the odd wooden games and weird stuff. Also they have one of the biggest arses working for them which doesn\'t help!

3. American Book Center sells a lot of fantasy books and books for roleplaying games. It\'s worth it to check them out!

And lest but definitly not the least!:D

Chimera: Definitly worth it to check it out! If you come by on a thursday evening you can come and say hello to me as I that is the night I work there! :cool:

Besides these stores there is only a GW store and that\'s about it. :(

Such a coïncidence finding somebody here that works there. I love visiting that store and whenever I often take foreign friends visiting A\'dam there. The room upstairs is really cool! :wow:
Do you have miniatures nowadays? it\'s been a while (I could be around some time in May. What time do you start working?)
By the way, thursdays is shopping evening in Amsterdam, isn\'t it?

I\'ll be be checking out Chimera for sure. Can\'t do Thursday evening, though, flying back to Copenhagen then.. Afternoon coffe, perhaps? I\'m bringing my 10 year old son Magnus along, he\'s never seen Amsterdam before, so Wednesday and Thursday we\'re gonna be in town. u2u me if we should meet someplace, my treat!

So many coffeshops to choose from...but, hey, what about those magic mushroom shops, eh?.....

@Minimaker: A coincidence indeed!:) I used to work there fulltime about 8 years ago but became very good friends with the owner. (sort of like a second mom or big sister...) Then a few years back she needed someone for the thursday evenings and I just stepped in for fun, been doing it eversince!:)

No miniatures there and I doubt it will ever happen again. We had GW for a short while but it just didn\'t fit in with the rest. Also there wasn\'t enough animo and expertise for doing it proper.

Thursdays is indeed shopping evening and I generally work there from 6 to 9. But if you come send me a mail and maybe we could hook up and chat a bit... (maybe make it a Dutch paint and greenstuff addicts meeting? lol )

@Space Munkie: To drink coffee I assume? :rolleyes:

I have a friend who insists on reaping a massive harvest every Autumn. He always has a freezer full of them!

@Minimaker: Uhm, polymer clay babies? She does a lot of sculpting but in most cases they are Gnomes and Pixies, but maybe my memory fails me... (it happened before so...;) )

When is the Fantasy fair?

@Marineboy: Got the mail! Will send you a mail as soon as I know which day works better for me. (as in when I\'ve got the most time)

P.s. Jerome, are you bringing some miniatures to show as well?:)

I went to a games store ine the 80\'s there- they sold very interesting things there to enhance the gaming experience. And, who said love and characters in RPG\'s was no fun <live actors for your game>talk about your full scale minislollol Twas back in my \"on the road rock and roll days\"
We pretty much all went- runnn awayyy
