Location, location, location

So old it\'s got whiskers...

Sorry, I am too lazy to start new threads and there are one or two threads I tend to un-inter on an annual basis or so.

As we get flushes of new people, who perhaps don\'t realise, you can add your location to your profile, I raise the subject to prevent confusion. Otherwise we get the, \"where can I buy...?\" type questions answered quite unintelligibly by someone on the opposite side of the world.

Besides, it is mildly amusing to read some of the earlier postings, back in the days when Steelcult was barely out of his egg and Supervike was only averagevike:D

:D Only Texans could possibly refer to this as \"the hill country\" with a straight face :D :D Most anywhere else it would be known as that flat area with a few bumps in it lol :D lol

Just to go back to the original gyst of this topic: I currently reside in Syracuse, NY. One of the reasons I DON\'T put that in \"location\" is because, having lived in other parts of the country I realise that the minute many people see NY they think NYC. I do NOT live in New York City, do not WISH to live in NYC and do not envy those who do. If that sounds like I\'m a little peevish about it, I probably am. Much of life in \"Upstate\" New York is influenced, if not downright controlled by \"Downstate\" New York. I guess its somewhat the equivalent of calling a Welshman English.
You\'re right. I live in Utica, and I don\'t dare just ever say \"New York\" when someone asks where I live as they always assume I mean the filthy city. They get our taxes, and we get their convicts and garbage. Great deal...

You stop by Altered States much? I don\'t get out there much, but I\'ll be playing in their Rogue Trader 40k tournament at the end of August.

Actually, Austin isn\'t flat. We\'ve got some nasty hits, a couple of mountains (not huge mind you, but we still have them) and that\'s the reason it\'s called the Hill Country of Texas. Dallas is flat.

Remember, from Austin, in the center of Texas, to El Paso is over 600 miles. That\'s a lot of climate and topography change. :D

Oh, I know. I lived in Texas for a dozen years or so, but still, by most peoples standards, Austin, while a beautiful city, is flat. :D I live in (near) Syracuse, NY. This is the part of New York considered to be relatively flat. That\'s why they built the Erie Canal through here. Still, the hill that Syracuse University sits on is at least twice the size of anything I saw near Austin. Trust me, I\'m not knocking Austin. I think it\'s the nicest city in Texas. It\'s all relative I guess. I just always considered \"the Texas hill country\" to be similar to \"the tropical part of Antartica\" lol

A friend of mine from Lisbon NY says that anything south of Watertown isn\'t really upstate.

As an indication of how small Utica is, I went to a Sorority party in Utica once because I met a girl over the internet (it was made of strings and cups back then) and she invited me. Well turns out she was one of only 3 members of the sorority.

or was that Cortland? I visited so many little NY towns....

I always thought someone should rewrite the Beach Boys\' Kokomo with names from upstate NY:

Cayuga, Elmira ooo I wanna take you
Canoga, McDonough come on pretty mama
Otisco, Oswego baby why don\'t we go ....

I grew up in Oklahoma then went to live in upstate NY. First thing I thought was what kind of crazy people would build a city on a hill?
And they put the roads OVER the hills instead of sensible people who just blast a flay way THROUGH the hill.lol

Aw, you\'re selling this place short. Hot and cold running vermin, diseases that there aint no cure for, and nightly fireworks displays from the friendly locals. Whats not to like?
