Looking for miniatures entirely painted with inks

In an old Citadel Journal (I think) there was a collection of miniatures painted only with inks and Mike McVey said something about them being the nicest miniatures he\'d seen (or similar).

Anyone know what I mean and can help me find them again?

I remember ages ago that they did some with inks directly on to the bare metal. I had a go on a chaos warrior, for his armour and it turned out alright, for my skill level at that time.

There was a series of figures featured in \'Eavy Metal by Frasier Grey that were done entirely in inks.

I\'ve done a few myself, but I have none of them photographed as they\'re somewhat old. It\'s not a difficult process and I use some of the techniques with most things I paint; you layer in shadows rather than layer up highlights, for example.

Don\'t remember who it was, but he did the Heresy Netherlord with green skin in inks, and it\'s impressive. I\'m sure an extensive search here might come up with a few results.

okay, wow...I feel really stupid. How is this even possible? How do you build up opacity with the inks without going really dark on the color?

Are these guys just primed white and then thin ink washes are used to tint them? seems like if they were done with only inks and no primer the metal would show through regardless of the number of washes unless it was really thickened over time which would in my estimation make it really dark too.

Is there something I can read about this somewhere? ???

Doh...just answered my own question by reading avicenna\'s description of his dwarf beast thing.

That\'ll learn me to ask questions \'fore I do the homework.

No ink used on that Demon.
Just lots and lots and lots and lots of thin thin green paint as a base, over a white undercoat.

You know I read Sven\'s post and think back to those old articles and I do wonder if he\'s getting a little mixed up in what he read.

Could be wrong but I remember an article where Mike was talking about Richard Wright\'s paintjobs and how they were some of the best minis he\'d ever seen. But he said they were painted in an unusual way using only thin washes rather than by regular painting techniques. But they would still have been using regular acrylics rather than inks.

And Richard\'s minis were indeed absolutely stunning to behold.

Basically painted in the similar way to Dirk Stllier\'s.

I know Nigel Stillman did an article for WD about painting brettonian knights using only inks, they looked so bad...it pains me to think of them.:(

Thanks for all the replies! :D

@EArkham: I\'m prettys sure they weren\'t in the WD. Fraser Grey was before my time as well? I started with this game in 1995 I think.

@SJB: Could be it! :) Tbh I have heard that he painted with inks in second hand... I think I remember the minis, I have a vague recollection, but I\'m not sure I\'m right. The mistake could have been in that inks were called \"washes\" back in those days. Do you have the issue? :)

Probably have the issue somewhere but not quite sure where...

Oh, and Fraser Grey worked all in enamels, not inks.

The whole concept of painting a mini using nothing but inks is an intriging one and something I\'m interested in pursuing as a side progect.
Currently I\'m painting a Squad of GW Imperial Storm Troopers for gaming using Drybrushing, then Washes and Glazes and am pleased with the results. So the Inks seems like logical \"next step\".

Well, strictly the inks aren\'t ink anyway... they are acrylic based so I can\'t see any problem with exclusively using them to paint a complete figure.

Ink is a dye mixed with shellac

I had a play with inks not long back and did this guy... was an intereseting experiment....using only citadel inks I had to heavily thin with clean water changindg the pot for each colour.. I wish I could phtograph better as the effect is really interesting particular for the ethereal feel of these winter elfy jobs.. over a white undercoat the colours were very thinly applied..for the first 3-4 layers I removed ink as I applied it on the edges using a clour shaper to produce the whitespots that acted as highlights when urther ayers were applied.. the only exceptions were ..The woodgrain on the stump was lined in a purple and black mix first. The freehand on the inside og the cloak was painted in rotting flesh after the first few glazes to set the base colour and then the glazes continued..There was still a little shininess when done in areas where I had got a little impatient and put the colour on a bit thick. but Dullcote sorted that..If nothing it was a very interesting experiment anddefinitely holds some promise..The inks give a difrent feel to thinned paint with some areas really jewely..As I say not the reatest pics (as usual) but gives you a feel..
