LOTR miniatures suck & other stuff

It is my opinion that LOTR minis suck a lot. Their detail level is low, everyone paints them in super-drab colors (like brown and even more brown) and they cost too much.
Sure, Rackham minis cost a bit too, but they are super-detailed and from France. So I guess they are a gourmet miniature.
Overall, I would say that Reaper is the best. They are detailed, cover a wide fantasy spectrum and reasonably priced.
I am curious to know if Warhammer is so popular because it is all that people know. Where I live, all miniature stores carry 95% Warhammer minis. Is that company trying to push out all the competition and get a mini monopoly or what?

I disagree about the LOTR minis - their detail level is high. I just wish they were bigger. And painting them in drab colors is a personal choice - most people paint them to look like the movie characters.

I think we\'ve already established in other threads that GW is the Great Evil. :D

I agree about Reaper, although their quality has decreased slightly as their quantity has increased.

The term beating a dead horse has come to mind.
This topic has been raised several times in the past.

Simple thing is; If you don\'t like em, don\'t buy em.

Yeap I agree Dragonsreach, this is a dead horse. I have only bought one box of LOTR mini\'s and I got tht on ebay for a steal.

Reaper puts out many fine mini\'s, their cost per mini is low and they have a very nice selection of mini\'s. My only complaint is that their castings sometimes are not the best.

Rackham has some nice mini\'s once you get past the dreadful Fianna\'s and the what were they dinking Dwarves. They are just a little to pricey for me.

LOL, did you just get out of a 25 year prison sentence or something?

Yeah, I personally don\'t care for GW\'s LOTR line. I\'ve painted them as gifts for others but wouldn\'t pick them up for myself. I find the sculpts are often... \"blobby\" in places, and have clumps of extra material where they shouldn\'t. Maybe they\'re overusing the molds or something.

I like the lotr stuff. I have a few observations, both for and against them.

For

1) They are \"realistic\" which i like.
2) They are more \"in scale\" than most other minis.
3) The plastics are great.

Against

1) They are on the small side, makes painting harder.
2) The quality of some of the metal casts is not so good.

{yes, GW is Ebil...blah blah... they suck...blah blah blah... horible sculpts... blah, etc....} = My new and improved \"Economy Rant\". lol

That really depends on the sculpter. Although a couple of their guys are, how should I put this? Sub standard? Most of their sculpters are incredible, have you taken a look at some of the stuff Chaz Eliott has been doing for their Warlord line? I actually enjoy buying knights again, not to mention Mr. Klocke\'s Elves and other pieces. The quality has only gone down because they have a much larger group of people sculpting for them, but Reaper minis are still the best BANG for the buck IMHO.

LotR minis aren\'t all bad, it\'s just that their so f__king small! I\'ve gotten used to 28-30mm, and I LIKE IT!

Beating a dead horse isn\'t so bad. It\'s a helluva lot more humane than beating a live one. lol

FIANNAS are lovely! And you can never have too many :p The dwarves are hideous but have you ever seen the old Reaper Empire dwarves? They are probably the ugliest minis I own.

Over on the GW forums they were talking about some guy Steve who never buys their LotR minis... they seem to be quite upset about it. :D

Yeah, I guess I have been out of it. I\'ve been in Korea for 2 years. You guys are touchy though.
Something else I\'ve been wondering: With all the time people spend posting here, when do they have time to paint?

LOTR minis are cool in my opinion though a little small and I know it has been covered before but here is my tuppenceworth as for the colourings in general.
Yes most people base their minis on the visualiseations of the trilogy, but even before that just by reading Tolkien and I have read his works many times now he is very descriptive of the world of Middle Earth and indeed all the inhabitants, very often describing costumes and looks and yes colours so it is difficult to go any other way.
Also take into account that for me and I would think that for many others who read the books before ever seeing the films the image portrayed in the mind was very close to the images portrayed on the screen and thus it is a fair leap of logic to say that the way people paint them just follows the same line.
There you go now shoot me down.

Sorry if I for one came across as touchy. Anyway, yeah I suppose the Korea thing is an acceptable excuse, you\'re lucky if you haven\'t recently experienced the horror that is a GW store :D

And we may spend 24 hours a day here, but we spend the rest of the day painting.

Hey anaughtybear; where in Korea are you? I spent a year in Tongduchon and 1 1/2 years in Wonju.

My two pence worth....

GW minis may be trying to be to minis what microsoft is to to computing, but theyre not all bad. Youve only gotta look at some of the dwarves that have come from them!

On the other side of the coin, I recently got a couple of Warmachine minis, and I have to say im in love. I want their babies.

Hi.....I paint whilst I post.....usually! :D I never usually buy LOTR,I find them a little small and have not been hooked by any particular figures :( Bit weird that....but seeing things like Awcho\'s Troll in the Painting and Conversions forum has sparked me off.....I may buy a Troll! They are too small though I was gutted when I found out I couldn\'t use their horses for my Empire massive lol
