Now to the work!! I have been able to paint some hours this sunday, so a little more advancements on momohime, plus an extra mini that I am also working with:

He represents a Beorning Lord from "The lord of the rings" books it is related to Beorn if you don't know who I am talking about, it's a skinchanger, so he can transform himself to a giant bear. It is roughly 4 cm. (1 1/2 inch? or so) I tried to implement the zenithal light idea with the priming, I hope that will help me to erase the "general lighting concept" from my mind because I think this (controlling a bit more the light source) is a better way to work.
I have painted the pelt with some S75 browns and one blue (can't recall which of them, because I am a bit impulsive with colours), then at the end added some black ink at the center and into some shadowy spots.
He has more pelts at the front, but not sure which colour I am going to paint them, probably brown too, but a more yellow or orange approach, just to make it a bit different from the one at the back.
Now to Momohime!!
Deepened the shadows and did some more hihglights, glued back his head and reserved her thumb for the next session, I think I will take profit of it missing by painting the belt that is behind form where the thumb should be. xD I also did the flowery "pom-poms" that she wears on her head and putted the base capes of her knickers, knee bondages and sandals. Picture is more bright than it should be though... (aluminium palette reflected the light and my ikea flexo was a bit to close)

You can see the colours on the pic which are: Antares red, Fuchsia, Red leather and also Deep red. For the shadows I used the same blue that is on the knee bondages and on the scarf Abyssal blue (all scale75 colours). I have also found that keeping two jars of water (one for warm colours and the other for the cool ones) helps me a little bit with my mixes, the same way it would be with metallic colours (using a separate jar for them).
I made some research on flowery patterns on kimonos and found some inspiring images on the web, but some patterns are just overwhelming for me now, so I'll just keep them for reference and as inspiration. So I'll put some of them here for you to see and the notebook drawings that I made to find an "easy way" to draw those flowers. The method that worked best for me is drawing 5 circles then adding and substracting shapes to form the different petals. <-- with a pencil seems easy but I still do not know how it will be with a brush xD

Last but not least: Scale 75 colours are so matt that they absorb subsequent layers of colours really fast, on this momohime I worked on wet surfaces then moved pigments around with the brush. With Momohime I am using a n.2 Escoda "Reserva" and a n.1 Escoda "Optimo"

Looking good, Maenas! That bear-guy looks familiar - I painted him something like 20 years ago!
By the way; I've tried the pinning trick before, and never managed to make it work. Blutac doesn't stick when I want it. So I put the pin into one part, and use it to stab a little mark in the other part. Works... most of the time.

@Teronus: *maenas halts his walking and bows his head a little, just to continue on his things after doing the courtesy reverence* xD
@Archarad: I am not going to do anything that complicated, I am not that mad for the moment, and having a deadline approaching it would be completely crazy from my part. Those "real" kimonos are just a little inspiration ^^ I am going to have an approach more similar to the manga illustration.
@Oistene: Indeed that bearman is an old mini from the Mithril range of which I am only missing three or four "out of production" references at the moment (that's more than 600 miniatures, of which I have only painted almost 200).
Oh! and to bring back some of the stickiness of the bluetack, just stretch it a knead it a little before putting where you need it. this works for me all the time.
When I'm done with the textiles base (shading/lightening) I think I will varnish it matt and then proceed with the freehanding. <-- not sure if this will be a good idea, but I think I remember reading this on someone's WIP.

looking forward to seeing how the sketches work out onto the actual model. Kimonos always look too over the top compared to how they are drawn in the manga's/anime's.

Freehand is always a good idea! I saw in one pic that there are some decals included in that garage kit. You are not going to use them? *Bows in admiration* I for myself wouldnt resist using them. But surely you end up with something more individual this way. If you are looking for some Japanese "mons" =symbols for samurai families you should contact me. I bought a book on my travel through Japan which includes more than 1000 different types, including a CD with jpg files and vector files of all of them. Just give me a hint and I can look some for you up.
Some trivia if you are interested: Momohime is meaning Peach Princess in Japanese. Momo=Peach and Hime=Princess. You find Hime very often in Japanese Anime: Mononokehime, Kaguyahime,....

@Jike: Hola! The moulding process of this kit was done with an original piece with the decals on, if you look close you still can see were they were put. I have never used decals, so some day I am going to try them too. Oh! Thanks on that japanese hint now I know I am painting mario bross princess peach elder sister xD and that the "hime" part of "mononoke hime" is exactly princess. Also that japanese "mons" cd seems a very interesting thing to own... but from now on I will envy you because you have been to Japan!! Alongside NewZealand and Scotland is one of the places I wish to travel someday.

You have every right to be proud of those eyes Maenas! Those irises are fabulous and lovely genre-appropriate catchlights too. Her left eye needs just a tiny bit of clean up around the iris - trying to help.
And I've mentioned it already, but I really do love the colour palette you've used on her. :good:

The eyes look awesome, good work. If you can do them the freehand will be easy-peasy.
