I am using MIG filter and they are fantastic, but I\'d like to have the same in different colours, a friend suggested I mix oil paint turp and enamel thinner.
Does that seem a good idea? Any risk of explosion?
More seriously do you have any experience with preparing filters for future use using these products?
cheers

the mig filters are oil paints and odour free turps.

different oil paints and different brands of turps will give you slightly different results, so it\'s a case of experimenting.

just use a ratio of 20% oil paint and 80% turps.

Or you could try Water Soluble Oils.
Easier to dilute or clean and as easy to use as Acrylics.

Water soluble oil paints are pretty much the same as oil paints. The only difference is that you thin them with water instead of turps. They still take a while to dry though (like oils)

I\'ll show you some of the stuff I\'ve done when you come round Sunday.
They take about 24 hours to dry and licking your brush isn\'t recommended. lol

Mig filters and now their new washes are actually enamel based. Meant tobe used over Acrylics.

But to make a good filter, Humbrol enamels and white/mineral spirits is the way to go.

You looking at a minimal amount of color in the mix to affect the color that is underneith.

I only use acrylic - does an oil paint wash \"work\"? or a filter? Dol you recon I can prepare some in a bottle or it\'s better \"fresh\"?

Sure many guys use tube oils as filters.. and yes you could prepair it ahead of time in a jar.

The terms Filters and washes are different from figure painting.. a filter is commonly applied over the whole model to effect the color of the paint under it.

I useually spray my filters as I want a even coat with no brush strokes and buildup.

A wash is useually done carefully only to effect details like raised rivets or panel lines..many describe it as \"pin washes\"

The advantage of using an oil or enamel as a wash color that if you get some where you dont want it..dont fret.allow it to dry 15-10 minutes and then go back with a clean crush diped in your solvent material like turps or mineral spirits and wash/wipe it off.

If you can Get a copy the FAQ book by Andrea Press written by Mig Jemeniz is like the Bible for painting vehicles.

filters?

What\'s with this filters thing? I\'m getting confused here. This sounds like transparent glazes to me... am I being thick or have we developed a new term???

Exactly. Just a term coined by someone (in the armour community?) to mean the same thing as a glaze.

BUT...... wether I use oils or enamel to create a wash potion, how do I make sure that it either goes into the cracks (if I need a wash) or just settles everywhere (filter aka glaze)

I can\'t add future to turp or enamel thinner!!!!????????????

It\'s to do with how you apply it. A wash is a watery mixture applied heavily (\'flooded\' on). A glaze could be the same watery mixture, but just put on very thinly - with a just-damp brush or by airbrushing a mist coat.

Glazes can also be done with a paint mix that\'s thicker, by just spreading out the colour thinly using the brush or a Q-tip etc.

OK I get it! I imagine that I can also use MIG pigments to create wash potion? the thinner MIG sells works for everything they say, the only question is do I need to add some resin (resin for pigments by MIG) or not.

No the pigments dont make a wash like your thinking, you can add the thinner to them and apply them but when it drys it will look like dried caked on dirt/mud.

The Acrylic resin Mig sells is to be mixed with the dry powder to make thick mud. Add a small amout of dryed plaster powder and it becomes clumpy mud.

You really want to pick up a copy of this book , it will answer all your questions.
