Man how things have changed part 2

I just got back from letting my dog out and I was amazed of what I heard on the streets:
3 girls of about 10/11 years old were discussing something:
\"You know.. the dentist can see if you smoked\"
- Oh no!
\"Just tell him you drank coffee or tea or something\"
They said this while they were smoking.

I walked on, still laughing at those kids when I heard this of 2 kids of 7/8 year old passing by on bicycles:
\"Do you wanna go to the bike cross road?\"
- No.. there is no f**k to do there..

I was like: uhh? I didn\'t think of those things when I was 9.. Especially didn\'t say these things.
I moved on and saw a group of little kids (probably aged between 6 and 12) when 1 hit the other and started shouting at him all the curses, swears and disease\'s around. Quite a big park and I decided to mind my own business and I moved on until the little kid came back with his older brother (probably 9/10) and that kid started punching and swearing the other kid several times then moving away again. The group broke up.

Shocked by this I moved on with my dog (I never hook my dog up while walking) when I noticed there were 4 dudes around my age (17/18) walked at the same side of road as I was walking and they were moving towards me. I, not up to something cunning or mean just walked past them and look at some of them in the eyes without showing an emotion of anger and they looked very very angry at me :\\

After I looked at them they tried to \'look cool\' and started to put me under pressure with words like: \"what is your problem?\" \"wtf are you doing?\". I, confused why they said that, said: \"Uhm.. I\'m letting my dog out? Is there a problem?\" and they began to shout at me saying things like: \"don\'t go act so tough, a-hole\", that kind of things. I don\'t have to prove myself so I continued walking without spending further time on them.

This was just 1 day of the sunny holland^^.

Now I\'m wondering.. is there something wrong with \'my\' generation (the children from 4 to 19/20) ? Are we so different from other generations in so many ways, most importantly, respect towards others, compassion and violence?
Ofcourse, this doesn\'t count for everyone of this generation but have any others of my age (17/18) noticed this too? And how about you old geezers (Just kidding:D ) have noticed anything with their children or others at street?

Bob Dylan needs to do a re-write...

\"Come gather young children,
to beat assholes up.
Remember your bike chains
and to wear a cup....
We\'ll beat them and kick them
until they\'re near dead....
For the times they are a-changin\'...\"

Younger kids are definitely \"unique\". If I went around cursing when I was 9 my parents would have given me spankings and would have sent me to my room without TV or anything else to keep me busy.

I hear kids all the time cursing at that age and I wonder who taught them to speak like that? I guess is that they are the offspring of the delinquents that decided to have children when they were only 15 years old and do not know how to properly raise their children because they never cared. Where I live this is pretty much the case, California. I heard on the radio recently that teenage girls were getting pregnant just because they wanted to be pregnant and have children at the same time as their best girl friends. I think that is completely incompetent and repulsive. I do not know about Holland.

I\'m 18 and work at a store, every day kids shock me with the way the act. It\'s like the don\'t have any parents and never were teached the proper way to behave. I guees it\'s all about being cool in front of your friends, kids usually act somewhat better when in company of there parents.

At my college 70% of students smoke, 70% of which are under 18 and therefore have people buying them cigarettes. A normal weekend is one you cant remember... I dont get it..

The other day I was running a sports session for a group of 10-11 yr olds and one of them said \"this is f*cking gay\"

Who do I blame? Their parents... what these kids need is a good smack around the head... I say bring back corporal punishment..

At college I study public services, which is basiclly the study of the public services, law, international law, UN, human rights etc.. for going into a career in the Police, fire service, Army, Navy, cps, etc...

Out of approx 35 students, one is a drug dealer, one has been and is involved in burglary and bank fraud and drug dealing, one got a driving ban for drink driving and was a drug runner.. at least three other people have sold drugs... 80% smoke, 90% get pissed out of their brains 4-5 days a week... a few think its ok to teach kids sports whislt stoned off their face... One is pregnant because she thinks it will get her boyfriend off drugs... Another has a three year old child at the age of 18 and hasnt seen the father since the baby was born...

These are 16-19 year olds..

At my old old school 11yr olds know the full details of sex, a number of the smoke, drink and take drugs...

I get offered dog fights every time I walk my dog...

I nearlly got the sh*t beaten out of me today by a smack/crack head, prison tattoos, shaking like a cat on acid, when he walks into gregs, take three sandwich boxes, shouts at me \"what are you looking at\", nearlly crushing the sandwiches without noticing then walks straight out (btw are the teardrop tattoos to say you were in prison or to say you killed someone, I cant remember..??)

This guy should not have been on the street..

I wonder what the world is coming too..

The teardrop tattoo can signify many things: loss of a loved one, that you avenged a family member\'s murder, that you have killed someone (one tear per murder) or that you murdered someone in prison.

As far as kids these days, my daughter (11 years old) refuses to swear - she won\'t even say the title to Hellboy; it\'s \"beep\"boy.

She knows her manners, although she forgets them sometimes, especially after spending a few days with my ex - who still doesn\'t understand why she should say please or thank you to anyone.

I\'ve taught her as best as I can and let her know that she can always talk to me about anything openly and honestly; just hope she continues to do that.

I guess most young children are polite and all that. But you never notice the good ones, only the bad ones :p

Well, I don\'t have quite as bad experiance with young people as some here, but I do notice that a lot kids don\'t have any respect for adults anymore.
I remember when I was young. If an adult would scold us for something we\'d done, we would be that small with hat. We wouldn\'t have dared to talk back since they might tell our parents.

Nowadays I often see kids insult adults when they are told off for something. Even if it\'s a person of authority. They don\'t care at all.
I can\'t imagine they have a lot of respect for their parents either.

When i was walking in the city park a week ago some kid of around 15 age whispered something in the ears of a 6-8 year old. Then the 6-8 years old walked to me and said: I hope you die off cancer. I was like: WTF and then the 15 year old started laughing and said well done to the small kid.
Things sure are f*cked up lately

I cannot believe some of the things children say and do. I 23 and have a 2.5 year old and one due in July. (i got married in september:beer::cussing:) I work as a lifeguard and swimming coach in the local swimming pool. Just today one school student aged 9! was messing around, nothing serious just being stupid. A female coach who i have known from childhood told him to wise up.

At that the boy climbed out of the pool walked right up to her and said \"go and get raped you F**king whore\". I was gobsmacked, a 40 year old hearing that. When i heard that i grabbed him, and trailed him out. Lost my profesionalism in b
an instant. School teacher said it was normal for him to say things like that. Now the parents want me disiplined for taking there child out.

If my child said that and i found out...... well lets just say my dad had suitable punishment for me known as \" around the house\" or a bounce off of every wall! :(

Also on a side note id say 6 out of 10 kids are overweight!

Wow. At my school, I don\'t know that stuff just doesn\'t happen much. Might have to to with the fact that we\'re so rural + we are a university town (UConn!!!) which means half the kids there are the children of professors and stuff. I\'d say that out of about 1200 kids at my school, maybe 200 would smoke and do drugs. No one swears that much unless they mean it and the youngest person I\'ve ever heard swear for no reason was 13.

@Master of fact: Congratulation to you and your wife

Well let me start with saying that physical punishment is wrong. When i hear things like \"spare the rod, spoil the child\" i can´t help but think what those people would think if a policeman gave them a good smack on the head everytime they are catched speeding or making a mistake .

It´s strange we just had this talk at my local Games Store, a few weeks back. As one of the regulars said: We got codes, laws and rules for everything in germany, except for having kids. Every Nutjob, every irresponsible person who can´t even care for her- or himself can have kids.
And the result is exactly what you all said - kids who know no rules because they have given no boundaries because there parents have calmed them down with toys or the telly instead of spending time with them and take no advice . Just take your little anecdote Master of fact: I would bet my next paycheck that the parents of the little brat will tell you that you had no right to tell there kid what he has to do or to interfere with their parenting, which evidently was lousy to say the least - i have done some pretty inaprobiate thins when i was a kid, but never something like that.

oh and just a nice story i witnessed:

I´m sitting in the train to University , in the compartment next to me sits one the most obese woman i have ever seen and her son, ring pierced through one of his ears. While i´m trying not to stare and ask myself how a small boy can have a pierced ear, this Woman starts to talk to her son. Screaming actually. I guess you have all seen \"the infamous god warrior \" from Spouse Swap ? - then you can guess what kind of \"parenting\" i was allowed to witness. This 300 pound gorilla yelled at her little son \"To stop bothering her with his crap\" while the kid tried desperately to get his moms attention. I can´t tell you how sorry i felt for him, and im still mad at myself for not saying anything, but at the time i was just rendered speechless.
That kind of :cussing: is exactly what turns little kids into little monsters.

so any idea what would help ?

EDIT:

@Wiccanpony:

/:Sarcasm - mode on:

Millitary discipline for kids ? No thanks. An infamous german leader tried that between 1933 and 1945. It´s great for turning kids into soulless ,narcicistic drones ready to die for their country, not so great for raising them to become individuals in free society

/: sarcassm off

sorry wiccanpony, you just triggered my sarcasm muscle

Really? - good for him !

I remember how shocked i was when i first saw it. Don´t get me wrong , we got a german version of the show that features some pretty big nutjobs as far as i heard from my mom ( i rarely watch TV ) but that one was pretty unique. I dunno who i hated more : She or her friends. i have never seen somone who comes in room and the first question after being introduced to the new person is \"Do you go to church \" . What kind of people does that ???

Parental guidance would help.. but most parents wouldn\'t accept that or they have no idea what their kid is up to.
(neither do my parents know, but I got boundries of what is right and wrong).

Its truly sad that these things are happening.

I\'m 47 and things/people/society has changed A LOT!.
Remember trick or treating without a second thought? I do.
It was a BIG deal when a kid in 6th grade lit a cigarette at school.
Gangs were something weird that happened in New York.
Porn was a rare and shameful commodity and was hush hush.
The teacher was THE RULE in the class room.
School shootings were about rubberbands and tiny sling shots.
And on and on and on................

My folks would comment on my generation aghast saying how things weren\'t so bad when they were kids. Somehow I think our \'enlightened age\' needs some old fashoned enlightenment.

This is the most pessimistic crowd! lol

Growing up, there weren\'t many kids that openly smoked in elementary school (so, age 4/5 to 12/13). Often when you hear about long time smokers (in their 40s, 50s, 60s, etc.) many say that they started when they were 11 or 12. It\'s not like this has changed at all. Underage drinking seems to have increased since we started taking tabs on it, though.

Swearing was fairly common, but myself and most others didn\'t curse at all (I do a little now, but I\'m 18, and in society as long as you\'re about that old it\'s okay...?). A lot of adults I have to serve at work (supermarket deli), about 1 in 20 are extremely rude, and while most don\'t curse, many will grow impatient within a few seconds and even call me over to complain about prices. People that are the majority age of forum posters on CMON can be rude in a whole other way. It\'s just when we look back on the next generation, we compare ourselves to them without acknowledging the effect that WE had on them, or how our perspectives differ with theirs. Let\'s lighten up a little.
