i\'ve been to private school, primary(state) school, and now agian, private school. they are almost the same.

in the past four years, i have seen teachers cry, people dance on desks for whole lessons, and the teacher being unable to do anything, people openly letting other kids know they smoke weed.

and this every weekend plastering crap WTF?! i REALLY want to see the hot shots in ten years time when their 25, and have been getting pissed since they were 15. these guys are some of the most talented sportsmen i\'ve ever seen, but all they want to do is get pissed.

WHAT IS THE WORLD COMEING TO?

Remember trick or treating without a second thought? I do. No, unfortunatley that was an American Import to the UK in the mid 80\'s.
It was a BIG deal when a kid in 6th grade lit a cigarette at school. Smoking at school, \"Pegging\" there were several hidey holes for the peggers.
Gangs were something weird that happened in New York. \'Gangs\' were the guys you hung around paying football with.
Porn was a rare and shameful commodity and was hush hush. Richest in our school was a rare Playboy.
The teacher was GOD in the class room.
School shootings were about rubberbands and tiny sling shots. Our Physics teacher gave us a great lesson on dynamics and inertia using rubberband catapults. Then let us go \'nuts\' for 5 minutes at the end. Great Education standards then lol
And on and on and on................

My folks would comment on my generation aghast saying how things weren\'t so bad when they were kids. Somehow I think our \'enlightened age\' needs some old fashoned enlightenment.
I see one of the problems in our education system is the number of teachers who have qualified to teach straight from university. Over the last few years I\'ve seen several Newly Qualified Teacher recruitment days for my council, without exaggeration I have never seen a NQT on those days who was more than 25.
Now think about that. We are expecting these NQT\'s to deal with situations/people when all they have known is an acedemic environment and have little experience of \'the real world\'.

Teachers of my generation\'s schooling were in the majority men and women who had been in empolyment external to education, prior to taking up teaching. In some cases they were ex-servicemen but all had a sense of balance, understanding and discipline.

Well, I don\'t have quite as bad experiance with young people as some here, but I do notice that a lot kids don\'t have any respect for adults anymore.
Thats just the trouble these day the kids and not just them but those also in the 18 to 25 bracket half the time have no respect for each other let alone anything else.

I am not painting everybody with the same brush there are exceptions as in every case :D but it seems to be the general rule that we all owe them a life???

They have no respect for anybody or anything, a military life doesn\'t even curb this and would be a waist of time and training most of the kids joining up now are just destructive mindless morons who would rather trash the place than do a days work.

I honestly don\'t think there\'s a loss of respect - it\'s just that there are some \"juicy phrases\" thrown around that older people might see as an insult when they are not supposed to be.
For example it is not rare to see a teenager call someone else a bastard. In many cases this is actually not supposed to be an insult, but is said in good humor - a \"harder\" version of... well, in fact I can\'t find an English phrase for the many derogatory German phrases that are actually quite affectionate. Ah well. You lot understand what I mean.

What I really like is this stupid \"I\'m your mother\" insult, because it never really feels like an insult. Especially not if the actual phrase is \"I\'m your mother, you son of a whore!\" :D

What are you doing posting on here Bill? Aren\'t you meant to be on a street corner somewhere snorting crack and selling hash to 9 year olds, whilst intimidating granny\'s with your 15inch flick knife and eight headed bull mastiff?

No?...I didn\'t think so, seriously things aren\'t that bad.

Tings and times are changing, and as much as the \'older\' generations want to stick with their conservative ways they just don\'t apply anymore.

If people really want to sort this out they need to start looking at things from the kids perspective...literally, get down wit the kids!

Peace and love...

:duh:

As for your comments about the college kids smoking...your point is?

Last time I checked you had to be 16 to smoke in the UK, so the 70% of people you mentioned are actually doing nothing wrong.

Peace and love...

Where is that quote from that ancient greek guy about the state of the days youth? I would say its not really any different to how its been throughout history.

The swearing thing in particular, words that were once highly offensive gradually become less so. When I was at school I got into real trouble for saying \'bloody\', now its being used in Harry Potter...

What concerns me is lack of discipline, kids and especially teenagers need solid boundaries, by their very nature they will test these, if they aren\'t solid they will go right through them. These days there is a lack of discipline, thats the biggest problem.

I\'m also concerned by the cynicism of some of the younger ones here, you\'re too young for that, go do something wild and rebellious ;) (except smoking pot, that really screws your brain up if done as a teenager, prevents it from developing properly).

@ matty

Its virtually impossible for adults to \'get down\' with the kids, by definition anything an adult does cannot be cool (with a few exceptions, usually pop stars).

So 100% of the people buying them cigarettes are breaking the law.

My 7th grade science teacher actually made the local paper, all be it 50 years late, received the Bronze Star for combat heroism on Okinawa. His bravery there on May 14, 1945, against Japanese mortar attacks and heavy gunfire during the Battle of Sugar Loaf Hill earned him the Bronze Star. Surviving one of the war\'s bloodiest battles, he also won three Purple Hearts before the Marines honorably discharged him in November 1945.If you have seen Gran Torino, you\'ve seen a clone of my teacher. He was actually a really good fellow, just a thick leather hide.

One of my English Literature teachers was a Retired Major.
Eighth Army, fought at the (2nd) battle of El Alamien. Turns out that was alongside my mothers cousins both Sergeants. (One Tank Brigade, one Artillery)

@Trevor :

\"Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers.\"
— Socrates

And the full quote is even better, but I can\'t manage to find it :p.
