manufacturer with the best sculpts?

hey guys,

I was thinking of investing in some higher quality figures this year. A question in my mind as I contemplate where to invest my money is: What company has good sculpts?
I am particularily interested in sculpts that do a good job on the human face. The female face in particular.
Please note that I am talking about the 28mm scale range.
I notice that 54mm figs have >much< better faces but unfortunately I dont collect those.

To give an illustration: I am really fed up with the neanderthal female face with the strange forehead and the eyes set too far apart. I mean I guess I know one person who looks like that but I know thousands who don\'t.

I eagerly await your sage advice :innocent:

This isn\'t always a question of the manufacturer, but of the sculptor, really.

For female minis, Werner Klocke\'s got some really good ones (I\'m using 2 by him in a diorama I\'m working on).
Sandra Garrity has some that are pretty good, but she also has a tendency of posing them the same way, and just giving them different clothes and hair styles..
I don\'t know sculptors by name well enough to offer more comprehensive advice on the subject.

Thank you for your advice!
of course the sculptor is key.
I see they have both done sculpts for Reaper. Is Reaper good quality?

yes, my first notion was Rackham. Their sculpts are rad. The first time I saw pics of their sculpts my eyes fell out of my head and rolled under my desk.
however, they are not so big on the human face. They tend to go cavewoman face everytime and twice on sundays.

GW\'s still got some of the best sculptors out there, but some are better than the rest for sure.

I like Juan Diaz, Jes Goodwin (awesome guy) and Brian Nelson the best personally.

Klocke dominates the Reaper catalog, every single Reaper fig I\'ve bought is one of his, and so are all the ones I have on my shopping list.

Rackham\'s got some awesome ones, but they occassionally have very \"flat\" models with unnatural folds in the cloth. I don\'t think they\'re worth all the hype personally... I\'ll shoot myself in the head if someone ever shoves a Wulfen in my face talking about how cool they are.

Steve Buddle\'s a really overlooked sculptor as well. I\'ve always loved his work, both with Spyglass and some of the commissions he did for GW\'s Specialist Range. The 54mm Judge comes to mind as a top notch model. Always wanted one of those... one of the few 54mm GW figs I haven\'t painted!

The staff Christmas present 54mm Wood Elf is on that list of must have\'s as well... but obviously that one\'s not gonna be easy to get ahold of!

to say any one company has the best sculpts is absurd im sure we all have minis from lots of companies we like..which means biased opions on styles/sculptors we like..if youre only willing to buy from one miniature company you are hardcore for sure.

I stand by my first statement.
Sculptor over company.
Some of them hop from company to company, depending on theme or genre, or commissioned work.

I favour no particular company intentionally, though I do presently own more Reaper than anything else. Got a couple of big big lots from Ebay.

I think that this is a fair comment.

Hi lupine,
There are just so many cool miniature companies out there to choose from. It sounds like you\'re going to order your minis on-line so it\'ll be more convenient to just order from one company.

If there\'s a good mini store in your city I advise you take a trip on down there and take a good look at what\'s available.

My personal favorite mini companies include: GW, I Kore (Celtos), Reaper, Hasslefree and of course Privateer Press, Iron Kingdoms.

Check out this link: http://216.247.60.113/Gama2003_IK_Celtos.htm

Good luck.

Naukhel yeah i agree and youre right most freelancers..just not viable to work specifically under one banner as most companies cant afford to hold them under contract with amounts of work to keep them exclusive..so they work for alot of companies ..and youre like me you have tons of everyones minis..reaper..rackham etc etc but in 28mm scale I dont think reapers would match as they are now more 32mm ..now ive done it ive started a scale creep thread LOL

Wow! thank you for your wisdom and expertise. You have made my research much more effective. It is going to take me some time to look up those sculptors. I will though, I will.

My ignorance on this topic has caused me to commit semanitc errors. I did indeed mean:
\"who are the best sculptors >and< who reliably mass produces or LEs their work in a durable and desireable format\"
The types of minis i prefer and am looking for
are, of course, my personal taste alone and not intended to defame any sculptor, any company or the hobby which we enjoy.

Thank you for your input. Klocke is right on the money. I am glad there are so many fantasy minis to chose from these days as compared to 25 years ago.
Here\'s hoping some of your ebay luck rubs off on me!:bouncy:

Thank you sir. You are quite right. Since it looks like I may need to pick and chose from a number of companies... buying from a distributor may be optimal.
Thank you for your time and your reccomendation, that is most helpful.

scale creep does not bother me. 32mm is close enough to look like \"Tall\" and \"short\" (imho) which is a cool effect for a mini \"team\" or squad.

Are you >the< Eastern Front Studio? I was looking at the EFS website a few hours ago. That was my first visit. I really admire you guys.

Wave 1: Paladin (by Gael Goumon)
Wave 1: Antimage (by Benoit Lopez)
are on my list in a big way!

---------------------------------------------------------

well, thanks to you excellent ladies and gentlemen; I now have four minis on my list where before there were none.
Cheers!
please keep the enlightenment coming!

Lupine yes we are EFS and I agree about minis being close enuff 28-32mm but some people are anal about this..to me not every human is 6 foot tall..but with several sculptors all the minis will be slightly different even if they are the same scale..thicker thinner taller etc..glad you like the antimage and paladin by 2 very good french sculptors Gael Goumon and Benoit Lopez.

No they don\'t. They have two or three competent sculptors and one or two who are certainly a cut above the others. Unfortunately most of the potential is never realised due to the dull nature of much of the concept work they have to stick to.

Vespids anyone?:|~

OK I might be called a bit biased here but for me Kev White at Hasslefree does the best female 28mm figures by far.
Steve Buddle at Spyglass comes close though.

And no-one has mentioned Tom Meier yet.......tut tut.

Yes thats 30mm.

I have to agree, especially when you are talking about female faces. The majority of GW miniatures suffer from a horrible case of man-face.
In fact the only good looking females I\'ve seen from GW in a long time are the new versions of Arwen.

I like Spyglass and Hasslefree as Klute says for female faces, also Darksword have some fantastic sculpts as well those these can lbe quite challenging.

Hmmm.... I haven\'t seen Ilyad Games mentioned above, they are really worth a look as well.

http://www.asmodee.com/retour-des-dieux/

I don\'t have a link to an English page, if you don\'t understand French I\'m sorry, you can always go and have a look in \"liste des figurines\", the minis will all be referenced there.

You might want to check their sculptor\'s galleries out...

Some more of their minis can be found in Bragon\'s gallery:

He only painted a few ones though, the only sculptors are Jacques-Alexandre and Thomas.
