lol For the second time ever, I agree with Pete :D
The Eavy Metal jobs for these minis are actually excellent:

But how can they compare these \'Eavy Metal paintjobs to these?

A bit inconsistent, no? ???

LOL

lol, if all those links were masterclass, id be either a master or my 7.3 celestine, i must be a god cause its more detailed and smoother than what i see...
Yeah imo GW minis have gotten ALOT more lame, i remember back in the good old days when the green knight was like wow, and imo even today it looks seperb.
just my 2 cents:rolleyes:

\"Masterclass\" is the new \"pro-painted,\" guys! Get with the times already!

It\'s all subjective. I disagree that the CMON top 50 is where to find it for reasons already stated better by others.

Is thinking \"I can\'t do that\" really such a common sentiment amoung painters that a high quality how-to puts them off from even trying? That\'s a completely foreign idea to me... when I see a high quality how-to, my first thought is \"Wow, that looks easy\" which makes me want to try it...

Different painters!? :) I agree that the necromancer is very uninspired. Maybe it was painted under time pressure?

I paint my thumb.
Not sure this is exactly fair - I still maintain that Martin Footitt is possibly the best miniature painter in the world, and that my old mentor Mike Anderson is right up there with the Jaques Alexandres and Jérémie Bonamonts of this hobby.

Ho, I wasn\'t refering to indivual painter or to EM for all that matters.
I was stating that, generally, the quality of their demo/presentation/cover stuff has really been outclassed by that of Rackham, Reaper and the like and that they\'d have a hard time catching up to them in this aspect.
And they don\'t really try to anymore, imo.
I don\'t know of who the big players are outside of CMON rankings, hopefully, there are still plenty of excelent painter that work under GWs flag, else they wouln\'t have much left to hold on to, exept a cohort of brainwashed gamers, of course.

What I know is, at first, I was looking up to the demo stuff of GW as the unatainable objective as a painter. It\'s really not the case now.

That\'s embarrassing, not just for the poor guy who painted it, but for us as well.

As for my top 50 comment, read the second line. As I said it\'s about those who are willing to share and help others who put themselves in the Masterclass category for me.

I agree with you DR, to share that which you know to help others I think is a great teestament to a painter at what ever level he or she might be, I also agree that rank on Cmon is not always a true repesentative of a modellers skill the top 50 are definately top class artists but there are many lower down that do awesome work and there are others that do not even put there work on this site.

I also agree. Part of being a master, in any art, is helping others to improve. If you don\'t, then you\'re not a master, regardless of how good you may be at painting.

Second line!! You expect us to read the second line!!!! How am I expected to form a knee-jerk reaction if I\'m expected to waste my time actually READING other people\'s posts ??? Man!! You people expect an awful lot from a guy :(

Just as an aside, it never ceases to amuse me just how far & wide you people will go to come up with a new reason to bash GW. YOu know, I hear they actually wear brown shoes!!! Scandelous!!! Man!!! What\'re they thinking!!! Don\'t they know that Brown Shoes Don\'t Make It??? God! That\'s a sure sign that they\'re going out of business, probably within the next 15 minutes! A sure sign that they\'re demon spawn! They\'d probably make thier daughters do a nasty on the White House lawn!

On the other side, if you help but you\'re not really good... you\'re just being a nice guy.
This should be called \"Nice guy classes.\"

I don\'t want to again fall under the GW Basher banner.. just to give a little weight to the arguments:

What is good there, what is there to be learnt?
Neatness? Composition? Texture?

We vote this 3 around here. I\'m surely not full of myself by saying that.

These are just naked facts mate - look what are they showing on their website ;)

The one you show is in their \"convershun klinik\" Which means that it\'s there to show off conversions.

okay. I might be a softie.. but I feel a bit bad when people slander these employees work like this. This is the second time that specific mini comes up.. and no it ain\'t pretty. But the picture is oversharpened and I don\'t think the one who submitted it planned on entering it in a golden demon either. It won\'t look as bad IRL, that\'s for sure. But worse you might feel like you are attacking GW but really.. you\'re just attacking that poor bloke that did that mini. I\'m pretty glad that GW aren\'t being so elitistic.. it means that it has a place for everyone, even if I also want better painting guides.

But more interesting is that the two latest WD contains painting guides by the EM team (though a bit superficial).. and even some conversions/dioramas by the EM team. Some really inspiring stuff there.. for me that is I don\'t know about you. Especially like Anjas tau battlesuit conversion. So I think it\'s going the right way now.

I think a mastclass is exactly what it says on the tin. A class held by a master. And by a master I would say someone who is working at the cutting edge of whatever technique they are illustrating. I think that referring to the eavy metal guides and so on as masterclasses is not entirely accurate. It\'s a rarity to see the work of the eavy metal team showing masterful work these days. Looking at recent publications I see models that are just painted to \'a required level\' and no more. Not an absolute case but a good generalisation.

That said I absolutely do not want for the above to be seen as my saying that the eavy metallers are not good painters. Their ability is held back by time constraints and a level dictated by higher-ups. I know full well what they are capable off let off the leash and it\'s frequently staggering.

I know Martin Footit is no longer Eavy Metal but he\'s a good case in point. His eavy metal work was similar to the rest. Good but not spectacular. But then you see his real ability in his own pieces. People often question whether images here have been photoshopped. Well, I have seen Martin\'s work with my own eyes and I often wonder if my vision has been photoshopped. It\'s just staggering. I don\'t feel there\'s anyone in the world who matches his ability as a painter. I was completely awestruck by his Eldar Ranger at GD a few years ago. I have never seen a better piece. Ever. I saw his High Elf this year. If anything the painting was even better than the Ranger. Only reason that I don\'t consider the piece better overall is that Martin is still learning as a sculptor and the build didn\'t quite live up to the painting. But still insanely good.

Anyone yet noticed that Martin has a coolmini account and has been posting pics?

I think some people here should be bloody well ashamed of themselves.
Bashing GW again. Its just another excuse to have a go.
People have gone out of their way to do those articles and while they may not be Golden Demon winners to us I bet they are to the main audience that GW is aiming at.
How many gamers cant even pick up a brush never mind score a 5 here.

Actually, Klute, I think the GW guys are paid to put those up. As for my thoughts on Masterclass, break up the compound word. Master ( someone who has demonstrated mastery of the skills, ( painting, conversion, composition, etc)) and Class ( a place or means of learning ). So to that end, I include all of those who teach the rest of us. Vincent Hudon, with the Magmatrax tutorial, which is probably one of the best tutorials ever written. Most of the tutorials here on CMON, scoring a 9 or higher, the writers of the Darkson Design book articles, including Alexi Z, YellowOne, Ritual and the rest. The articles in the new Andrea book, including Banshee\'s Ogryn and Juan Carlos Avila Ribadas\' Dimrost Silverfang ( possibly the coolest Space Marine that I have ever seen.) The producers of painting videos Steeldog and Rune Kappel. Any of the painters that have tutorials on their own websites. The Brushthralls, and so many more. The people who teach at GenCon and other cons, or at exhibitors booths, Fluffy and Molebrain, and not only teach experts, but also beginners. Also, those who do good writeups at Electric Oceans Golden Toadstools.

Steps down from Soapbox, So, write up a tutorial and join the list of Master Teachers that give Masterclass some meaning.

Just my opinion.

paintsnobbery...

Not only is GW bashing becoming the sport of choice here, but so is \"paintsnobbery\".

Both are equally disheartening to me.

I have always considered myself a hobby painter. Not an artist...even the moniker sounds pretentious to me. But more and more this place has made me feel inferior of my hobbyist attitude.

I can definately appreciate an incredibly high level of paint, but the complete dismissal of minis if not \'technically perfect\' on this site is sickening.

I\'m not about to tell anyone else how to vote, but if you set your preferences to only show you the \"top rated\' minis you are missing out on what I think is the heart and soul of this place.

So many miniatures with so much character and fun to offer just get relegated to the backseat and never get so much a mention. Thats a real tragedy. That too is why so many people have to \'pimp\' their minis on the forums or the shoutbox. Good god, people spend alot of time and effort and just want to share, but unless you are painting a GD winner, you might as well forget it.

Its just soooooo frustrating to see this site, which I honestly do love, marching down the road to elitism. It takes so much of the fun out of the hobby.

I just want to mention that the ONLY thing that bothers me about any of GW\'s articles (and the one I linked to in particular) is that they are labelled as \"Masterclass\" (something I expect the authors are completely without guilt for). I think these articles are very good when taken into account what they are intended for. I just find it unnecessary to label them \"Masterclass\" when they are clearly about tabletop painting.

There is no need to riddicule the contents of these articles!
