I don't think I've ever seen all of the knights painted up before. This should be pretty epic. Did you consider putting the Dragan of Orianthe in there to round out every Alahan on Horse.

He is there.

small pic for today. The question is: do the colors look ok? Or should I choose a different palette for the gold?

Ohh and I need to change the setup a bit, on the original picture the transitions looked really rough and bad. Don't really know how, I'd like to avoid wetpalettes as I always have problems with them.

Mighty fine painting. I would go still darker in the deep shadows both on the reds and golds.
Don't go to crazy with the shades, just a thin wash and the increased contrast will really make it pop :)

Yeah, looks good to me too. I really like the lighter color on the red. I agree with Ten that you could do a darker shadow on the gold. You could try a tiny bit of green in there.

I agree with ten ball as well, the colors seem right, just a little more depth needed in the shadows to add that extra pop.

Dang, so this will be all of the mounted Alahan. Quite a feet, looking forward to watching it come along. I'm quite jelly of you, you know.

still playing with the gold parts.
So far for sanity I managed to get it down to 5 colors with no need to mix them, only the edges are feathered into the last color.
But I had to drop the purple from it, I don't see the difference now anyway.

darkened a bit the bottom of the red parts too with tank-brown.

So now the colors:
gold: noesian white (HL2), forgotten gold (HL1), kalienne yellow (B), beasty flesh (S1), dirty leather (S2)
red: fusion red(HL1), rackham red(B), vmc hullred(S1), vmc tankbrown(S2).

As I look at it live I think I'll remain with these as choices.

left: last image
middle: after some darkening , image taken with flash
right: same as middle, but no flash, just night-settings in the phone.

Don't sweat it too much. I think all that white space on the horse is knocking it down a bit.

That horse is looking at me in a way that say "lets go kill things." So I think you got the eyes done right.

As for the red, I think its' just the fact that the average color is darker than you had on the shields.

That is a pretty pony!

I do think you need to figure out that red again though. Maybe just a glaze more of the base red then one the of the Fusion Red?

Thanks for the comments :)

No worries, I won't loose any sleep on it.

exact same color, same method, that's why it feels weird. If I did something differently it'd be totally fine (ok, it'll be extra work to change it of course)

Not with R paints :D.
They are super for making transitions/glazes as their coverage is abyssmally bad when thinned (I like them because of this).
But making bigger changes takes time with them.

Tried to make it less dull, by using VMC-TransparentRed. I like it better now (of course I'll have to reapply the lightest highlights tomorrow (today as it's past midnight)).

Well after the first is done I won't be doing so many updates on them, just on this first one. After that it'll be more or less assembly line.

+ I really should do something about the setup to get better, usable photos. Right now too much changes on the images depending on the position of the mini, position of the light or if the phone decides to use flash or not.

I'm thinking that the reason the gold doesn't "pop" the same way as the shields is that A it's smaller area, B there's no shadow line below the filigree to give a Faux darkening.

Also because that's only the base color blocked in without any highlights / shadows. :)

Anyway some progress on the testhorse :)
Most likely I won't do much with the saddle, as the rider hides it totally anyway.

Great work, I have never tackled an animal before. The armor is coming up better and better from all your pictures. I do agree with DR make a small black or almost black marron thin line under your gold. It will make it pop and most of all separate the plate armor into sections so it looks more like layers of armor.
Happy painting
