The Dice Man

Just been reading a few of the threads and all the talk of SSS (shiny stuff syndrome) and OCBD (obsessive compulsive buying disorder) and DRA (dice roll addiction) got me thinking of a book I read once.

The Dice Man, by Luke Rhinehart.

Anyone read this book? It\'s great, it\'s about a psychologist who decides to change the way he lives his life and make EVERY single decision on the outcome of a dice roll.
It\'s compulsive reading, the thing is, he\'ll give himself a set of say 6 choices of what to do next, ranging from something simple like going to the local coffee bar through to maybe starting a hatemail campaign against his mother (not in the book but as an example). And the rules are simple, once he\'s made the dice roll he can not bottle out.

If you haven\'t read it, it\'s well worth it and it\'s fun to try it out too :)

I found the easy answer to shiny toy syndrome. Max your credit card, and then you have no money for new toys.

As far as dice go, I used to play necromunda. I had one set of dice for rolling low, and one for rolling high. The only problem was, the low ones rolled high, and the high ones rolled low, but you couldn\'t swap them cause that would confuse the dice.

When I roleplayed at varsity, if the GM touched your dice you had to go and replace them cause they got cursed and not only would you fail, but you would fail spectacularly.

Funniest thing that ever happened was an AD&D campaign. This one guy rolled a critical failure and managed to harpoon his foot to the floor. Then he tried the same shot, rolled another critical failure and harpooned his other foot to the floor.
