Miniature cliche\'s

Sooooo many of you are against boobs! (personally i love being against boobs lol )

Ok the boob issue, i really cant see why a warrior woman would have her boobs out, i mean a woman who can obviously take care of herself in the wilderness would surely wrap up in comfortable and losse fitting garments for the freedom of movement and protection they afford.

That being said, that would be like putting Germaine Greer or Janet Street porter in a leather thong saying \'there you go you feminist, cut the balls of that guy.\'

If the boobs are out and it calls for it such as Andrea miniatures PIN up range then all the better.

Amoured humans/humanoids

How can they move, i mean serously, there is a hospital somewhere with a can opener and a load of naked Space Marines running out of the back door,

Cheers,

Iain.

Not so much in minis - it\'s fantasy, I want things to be idealised! - but in historical figures I\'ve long hated the fact that most of the soldiers are A, youthful, B, good looking (and usually look well fed), and far too often, C, tall and well proportioned. And this is irrespective of the era, region or racial group.

But I shouldn\'t complain really as this was one of the main motivations for me to start sculpting my own heads, aiming for a grittier, usually older, more hardened type.

So now we need to find the picture of a large breasted, nearly naked chick, standing on a wind blown rocky outcrop holding a severed head and massive sword/axe, pointing at something with plenty of skulls.

Shouldn\'t be too hard to find.

The boob issue...

I don\'t think too much of realism and what\'s practical when it comes to fantasy miniatures (within certain limits, of course... there\'s a point when all you can really say is \"FFS\"...). I don\'t mind the semi-nekkid females (or males, for that matter...) as long as it\'s done with some sort of finesse. After all, certain fantasy miniatures serve more or less the same purposes as classic pin-up pictures. I see nothing wrong with that. But, style and taste is quite important in this matter. In my eyes, if it looks like Frazetta = GOOD!, if it looks like Luis Royo = BAD!

A cliche doesn\'t necessarily mean a negative thing, as the example of exposed tits and semi-nakedness illustrates (at least in my eyes). But, when cliches are used as an easy way out, or instead of thinking, then it\'s usually bad.

I hate the BDSM body piercing, the random rings piercing rolls of fat, beerguts, etc. Totally turns me off of the fig/army.

the \'flying on a stick\' miniature

I hate it when you see a little transparant plastic stick coming out of the ground to hold the miniature in the air.. It\'s such a waste of the miniature/tank/airplane/whatever!

Can\'t they come up with a base so it looks like he is flying or something?

Gee, maybe I should start sculpting historical figures. I\'m sure they\'d A) appear to be torn from the grave, B) hit with an ugly stick, hell, maybe the whole tree, and C) very, very misproportioned. Too bad there isn\'t a market for heads that look like they\'ve been chewed on by a dog. :drunk::D

Funny you should mentioned that. I was reading general CLinton\'s letters several days ago (American revolutionary wars - British side) and he was complaining that recruiters by the end of it grabbed anything with two legs and two arms, regardless of physical conditions. ;)

The cliche\' about miniatures I hate the most is that they\'re all painted better than mine!

I mean EVERYwhere I look: painted better...that\'s painted better...that one, too.

It\'s just SO cliche\' nowadays...lol

I hate minis in running poses that look more like they\'re skipping or balancing on one leg. It makes you wonder whether some sculptors have ever seen a real person running.

Space Marines are probably the chief offenders in this department. I don\'t think I\'ve ever seen a Marine in a convincing running pose.

The Badly Pulled Off Pose Mini
When a mini is sopposed to look as if charging wildly, it comes across as this:

\"WOOOLF PREEIISST! WOOOLLF PREEIIISST!!! I GOT ORK STUCK IN MY TOOTH AND I CAN\'T GET IT OUT WITH THESE CLAWS!!!\"

I hate that miniature.

Looks like a fat baby clown stuffed into a pair of powder blue footy pajamas that got lost on the island where the Wild Things Are.

It\'s just the head too...put a helmet on that and it\'s alright, just that head doesn\'t seem to match at all.

Minis with over the top, too intricate, hard to paint, super small details.

Also the default pose that seems to be used on every privateer press warbeast mini. You know, running forward with one hand high in the air and the other about to hit the ground... minis with this pose of the top of my head:

dire troll mauler extreme
Brine (the giant pig with the minion pig warlock)
winter troll
slag troll
earthborn and troll blitzer (sort of)

Some of the older GW models have a similar pose where one hand is one the air while the other is held in front of the mini. The slayer pirates all have this pose.

Neathage on warrior women. That is just NOT going to work lol Fiannas, I\'m looking at you

\"One-note\" factions... not so much a miniature cliche as a general one... even Star Trek was guilty of it.
