"Modern art" ??

I would think that if any crowd were to be open about the definition of the word "Art" it'd be mini painters.

Open about the definition of art certainly. However the idea that that definition frowns on non-representational art is perhaps not so surprising. Think about it. What is mini painting?Attempting to make a miniature sculpture look as realistic as possible. A worthy goal and a very difficult task,but not one that would lend a particular appreciation of the non-representational or abstract. It is (at least somewhat) unsurprising that tis community seems to value technical mastery, difficulty, and realism over artistic vision and expression.

And please, people. This is NOT meant as a condemnation or even a criticism. Merely an observation.

I would, however, expect at least slightly less condemnation for works that use a previously manufactured item that is arranged and painted for more artistic aspects. (Something like the examples of painted tires given)

However, I do somehow find the idea of painting a manufactured miniature being representational to be ever so slightly odd. While it does seem to be at first glance, the miniature was representational before painting, however. Just as a statue is representational without paint, what we miniature painters do is actually somewhat enhance the representational aspects of a figure, rather than use them ourselves.

I was referring more towards openness in the area of abstracts vs realism. Certainly we, as miniature painters, have a tendency to move towards abstract and different ideas from reality. There are very few of us with glowing swords and light or fire shooting out of their hands and mouths, after all.......well, unless any of you are Till Lindemann...

Though they tend to follow a few recognizable tropes, there are miniatures out there that take a moment to understand and be recognized. We do indeed tend towards more realism techniques. However, we generally are not representing anything that is viewable within the real world.
