So, you tell me it\'s morally acceptable, cause you think they won\'t feel the pain? Or cause they won\'t see it coming?
I don\'t see a difference, if you wound it, it will have pain, and even if it wouldn\'t, why do you think you have the right to kill something, just because you want to.

No, I don\'t think it\'s a moral question at all. Why does anything have a right to life? Why should we treat something well just because it will suffer if we treat it badly?
The reason our society is against wanton killing of other people is because if people ran around killing each other our society would quickly collapse. That\'s why we have rules, which we try to give extra weight by giving them a moral/religious dimension (eg. it is morally wrong to steal/if you kill someone you go to hell).
Humans are social animals because our forefathers benefited more from helping each other and working together than going solo. This has led to the evolution of social behaviours like altruism, empathy etc. These behaviours help a group or society to function more effectively and to the benefit of everyone.
So we\'ve decided that humans have a right to life, and we\'ve reinforced it with morality and beliefs. But there\'s never been any particular benefit to giving such consideration to other species, which is why they generally don\'t have rights. The focus has always been how useful these species are to us - Horses can be used for transport, cows and pigs make good food.
Caring for other species is a biproduct of the messed up society we live in. Feel sorry for the oppressed sheep, but who cares about the people who work their asses off every day for next to nothing?
Furthermore, I\'m human (more or less). I care about other humans, in particular my family and friends. I couldn\'t give a toss about the cow that\'s in my swedish meatballs, as long as it tastes good, and I care even less about some insect. I don\'t feel a longing to go around killing insects, but if one annoys me, I\'ll kill it if I get the chance. I don\'t in any way see it as a moral question, in fact, I see it as a non-question.

I\'ll vote against ants and wasps when I\'m feeling a little bit less misanthropic than I am now. Till then, anything that\'s not a middle-aged male is likely to die rather messily. :flame: Ooo, I feel better already.
Nah, as has been said, it\'s a pre-emptive thing. Mosquitoes will die. Ants and wasps stay until they work on my nerves. I certainly won\'t go out of my way to kill them - avoidance is better.

Interesting poll Rev! I generally don\'t go out looking for insects to squish, but if a wasp, mozzie etc annoys me, or bites me I would probably squish it. I also feed crickets to my pet gecko. He only eats them if they are alive, as he lives in a tank in my bedroom, I sometimes find it necessary to silence a noisy cricket by removing its wings in the interests of getting a good night\'s kip.
Spiders and some other arachnids scare me and I usually get Ian to catch them and put them outside.
Some other insects I find very fascinating such as beetles, moths, butterflies, etc and I generally admire their beauty and leave them alone.

Normally if a wasp comes anywhere near me I go faster in the other direction so the more people kill of the horrible things as far as I am concerned the better.
I think the real question is what purpose apart from sting the hell out of you do wasps actually provide/exist for ?

Taking this in a logical direction... we all have the right to kill (whatever it is we choose to kill, be it insect, animal, or human). It\'s merely a combination of the law of the land and our own indoctrinated morals that stops most of us excerising that right. Why differentiate between insects and humans? They both infest the environments that most suit them.
Ari: i\'ve found using a string for a leash is too heavy and kills them off faster. You get more fly miles if you pluck out a long hair from a lady friend and make a small noose, then slip it over it\'s head. But be carefull... the hair\'s so thin it can cut their head clean off if you over tighten the noose.

I think that killing is morally wrong, no one person should be able to kill another.
Now we are animals, little different to chimpanzees, and I can\'t see why we have any right to kill those either.
Moving on there is little difference between chimps and monkeys or dogs, or cats, or worms, or plants or bacteria.
Hmmm, I can\'t logically construct an argument that actually differentiates between any living thing in a meaningful way in terms of its \"right\" to life. Everything has a equal right and I have no right to kill anything.
Now I\'m in a pickle, how am I supposed to live?
After much soul searching I come to the following conclusions
1) I\'ll be magnanamous and fair, I\'ll eat EVERYTHING, plant animal all the same, hey I\'d be totally fair and impartial and eat human if it wasn\'t illegal... (vegetarians are amongst the cruelest humans on the planet, but thats another story)
2) If you get in tha way of my eating (yes I\'m looking at you Mr Cockroach lurking there in my cupboard eating my food) then I\'m taking your ass out.
3) If you try to eat me, then I\'m gonna eat you (yes you Mr Mosquito, bussing round my head, you are 1 second away from being a smear, I have also my eye on you Mr wasp, but you\'re safe as long as you don\'t sting me)

I didn\'t expect to find this poll to end up being discussed so much as it is. Fair play, we\'ve got an almost equal spread between the three options, with the yes vote scraping through by a couple of votes.
I liberate woodlice as often as I can, and I bat a wasp out through the window where possible. I don\'t like stepping on ants, but I massacre untold millions of moths when i cut the grass outside.

Chimpanzees are damned vicious! They are known to carry out gang beatings and killings, infanticide and have been known to eat their own. Much like us really!
We are omnivorous, therefore we are built to kill! I do not have a problem with killing for survival or protection.

It\'s just life. I voted I don\'t care. the way I see it....\'nature stuff\' Animal attacks, insect bites, natural disasters are all nature in balance. It happens...deal with it. So am neutral to it. When people start doing stupid things that disrupt that, I have more of an issue...
