Might as well use my 1,000th post for something worthwhile...

Sadly, it seems it is.

Is it bad that, despite her not being overly attractive and also wearing what looks to be a tie died t-shirt, I find the blonde girl (who can\'t think of a country beginning with U) much more appealing because of her dumbness? lol
Yes, it\'s officially bad. But she is kinda cute
That question about a country beginning with U is an interesting trap though: most of those asked, I\'d bet, would automatically think of their country as being America, not the United States. Now me, I instantly thought of Uruguay, and anyone with the least knowledge of world geography should have been able to think of that or Uganda.

Well, having tested the american school sytestem I\'d have to say they teach quit a lot.
Yeah, but how well? The breadth of the subject-matter is only part of it, the
depth to which each one is covered is also important and
the standard to which they\'re held is another (and many of us know that standards have dropped significantly over the last few decades).

Who invented the telephone, the light bulb, the concept of mass production, the aeroplane, the Guillotine? (These are all trick questions). Who was the first to lift off in a balloon? Do you know who Leeuwenhoek is? Bréguet? Lots and lots of historical figures have fallen by the wayside.

I can, and all the rest
But in all honesty I wouldn\'t expect most adults to know all this, regardless of where they\'re from. I would have in the past, but I\'ve since learned what a realistic expectation of knowledge levels is.

However, the problem here is that we are judging others intelligence by the ability to regurgitate facts that most of them have not even looked at since high school.
But some of this should be considered to be a normal - a reasonably expected - level of knowledge. Currency in Britain?

As a rule, I wouldn\'t put money on that myself! I have met countless numbers of people in my field who are quite frankly a bit thick.

(Just as I\'m sure many of us that have been out of college for some time would have trouble with trigonometry or calculus problems. Just because you needed it once, does not mean you retain it in the real world.)
Fair enough but come on now, this isn\'t trig or algebra.

Excellent point. Ignorance is
not synonymous with intelligence.

Knowledge does not automatically make someone intelligent.
Also dead on. Lots of \'paper geniuses\' with IQs in the upper reaches wouldn\'t come across as such if you talk to them - just look at the broad range of people who qualify for Mensa membership.

I think that\'s very true.

There\'s enough stuff I learned over the years I would be hard pressed to remember at a moments notice, especially with a mic in my face.
Yep, and I\'m sure a lot of people just went blank because of it, a kind of stage fright. I would have had that problem when I was younger, no question.

Same here; and I think that\'s really a good point. Although I do know of some people this ignorant that I haven\'t met.

Intelligence is by definition the ability to learn matters and being able to recall it when needed, even if it\'s been a long time. Being able to remember the stuff they fed you at school is a proof that you keep your brain in good shape and is a proof of intelligence.
No it\'s not.
Intelligence is
independant of knowledge, that\'s one of the key things about well-constructed IQ tests - they DON\'T rely on prior knowledge. Even Mensa tests sometimes fall into this trap, but what an IQ test should test for is reasoning ability, problem-solving skills, the ability to extrapolate.
Now some knowledge
is a given - you have to have a reasonable language ability to be able to understand the wording of the questions, you\'re assumed to have numeracy - but that\'s very different to expecting someone to be able to answer \"how do you find the length of the long side of a right-angled triangle if you know the lengths of the other two sides?\" If the formula were provided then it is a test of intelligence to ask someone to manipulate the equation - e.g. how do you find out the length of the third side if you\'re given the square of the hypotenuse and the length of the second side?

It\'s easy to disagree on all the mental capacity terms, there is different definitions for dumb, idiot, stupid, intelligence, wisdom... I don\'t remember them all.
Yes, knowing what each of those actually should mean can be important (so you don\'t come across as being the very thing you\'re describing!) but they are different from ignorant. But while we\'re on the subject anyway, let\'s make sure we mention cretin, moron and imbecile.

You\'re telling me that, by your definition, because I can\'t recall off the top of my head the proofs for the Pythagorean theorem, just because I haven\'t needed it since back in 9th grade some 30+ years ago, that I\'m unintelligent???
Idiot lol
