Dr. Bob

but not THAT Dr. Bob
Hi everyone,

I\'ve been lurking for a while and finally decided to try posting some of my own pics:

http://www.coolminiornot.com/?id=29746

Helpful advice would be appreciated. (I think I definitely need to get a macro lens ...)

I\'m just getting back into minis. This site has been a great inspiration, and I think I\'m learning a lot through the CMON articles and forums.

Thanks to all you regulars for making this a great site!

Welcome to the forums! The minis don\'t look bad, especially since they are old. The photos could use some work though. You might want to read the photography articles and if you figure out what they say to do then come and visit me. My photos suck.

Your pics look good compared to mine (too grainy). What kind of camera are you using?

Is there a Doctor in the house?

Hi Dr Bob! Your older minis look fantastic considering the materials you have used.

Boy, things have come on a long way since enamels, but anyone who could achieve your standard with enamels should take to acrylics like a duck to water.

My major observation was your skill in painting faces. IMO this is the most difficult part of mini painting and one that you seem to have mastered.

I left a comment on your recent elf figure along the lines of, an 8-9 face on a 5-6 figure. A casual observer will probably mark you on the body, but that is a good face. And, lets face it (Doh!) if you can do faces, you can do anything, almost.

Look forward to seeing more of your work:flip:

Thanks for the nice comments. It is definitely fun to be \"back in the saddle\" so to speak. \"Technology\" really has changed a lot. It makes me wonder what cutting edge people will be doing 10 years from now

An old HP photosmart 215. I got it for cheap several years ago when there was a misprint in my companies ad. The advantages of working at a computer store.

Nice. Does it have a macro feature?

Currently I\'m using the digital still mode on a video camcorder. Not surprisingly it doesn\'t really have the features that would allow good mini photos.

I could use my wife\'s SLR, which has a macro lens. But I\'m so impatient, it\'s hard to wait for a roll to develop to see how the pics came out!

coolpix 885

I recently invested in a Nikon Coolpix 885. It has some great features (macro included!)

Since it is an older model, I was able to get it off Ebay relatively cheaply.

It is great for mini pic taking, and just a great camera to have around.

Good luck!

p.s. I really like your avatar. The Dark Knight Returns indeed!!

if you have a scanner around even cheap ones do great specially with some photoshop adjustment to levels. i think there was a article for scanners or a forum tidbit. your minis look great, the faces are clean, i think with better shots etc theyd really shine specially the rest of the boddies. hell if theres one nearby you can tst cameras at any comp usa or some circuit citys or frys electronics. bring a mini along. dont worry about looking like a nerd, theyre the ones that sell electronics. see how good of a shot you can get with a camera with a flash or whatnot. or any friends with scanners. practically everyone i know gets some sort of free scanner with thier hardware.

Thanks for the suggestions supervike and wightzombie. I do have a scanner, maybe I\'ll give it a shot ...

(But to tell the truth, the whole mini scanning concept seems a little unnatural to me. Makes me think of office workers making photocopies of their behinds ... :moon: )

I think I\'ve just been insulted.:flame:Ah,well. You are right of course. We will let you try cameras. The Sony for $900 is the best but that\'s a little much. My HP 215 has macro function and average ebay price is about $20 right now.

sorry bout that johnboyjjb. :) i was specifically commenting on comp usa/circuit city although circuit city has the employees paid partly on commisions like add-ons and insurance. every time i go in there they just hover like hawks, one guy even gave me his unnoficial \"rep\" card so i could ask for him by name after i told him i just wanted some tape cassettes. on the way out they were convincing some poor lady to buy insurance for a pack of duracel batteries.

that or the few ive come across who after asking since i was impressed with thier knowledge of virtually any device in car stereo\'s (they would just rattle off features for any stereo and actually knew where the buttons were) they told me company reps actual visit from sony, pioneer etc under guise of \"buyer\" and if a high rated sales rep is really good (ala top sales as recorded by industry mags) with thier products they lay a 20 or 50 on them. sharks always unerve me so i bring repellant along. a grim face and a fast pace! whats that, you wanna stop me? :flame::eek:

S\'Okay

I work in repair so I\'ll get you in the end. We (the sales guys, not me) have this new plan were you get a percentage of the total, the only requirement being two or more items purchased. And trust me, if you went to my store with a warranty, you\'d probably be glad. I\'d know, working in the repair department. I hate it since the warranty companies are :moon: but I still get the money from them.:D

Hi Dr Bob,

I gotta say I luv ur dwarf mini and the face on ur ranger mini...... she looks real pretty......

I think you did a fairly good work with testors enamels on the 3 spear guys...... but since it was painted so long ago you\'ve probably made quite a few improvements in recent years....

I am jus curious about one thing... I noticed ur minis are in kinda darkish colour... was it on purpose or due to camera or.... other reasons?

Don\'t be shy.....just think of me as your Doctor

Hey there Dr Bob - at last a professional has joined this motley crew lol lol lol

Ahem.....anyhoo...just checked out your pics and I love the Grenadier one. I have a few box-sets of theirs - I\'d better get around to painting them sometime. I too have had a \'leave of absence\' from painting, but I\'m getting my groove back since joining CMON :D

I like the earthy tones, but as Tabithatan mentioned, was that intentional or a trick of the light?

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the forum - the guys & gals here really know their stuff. I for one am looking forward to seeing some pics of your latest models.

Hi Tooshy and Tabithatan!

Sorry for the delayed reply. I was on vacation and out of contact with the internet for a whole week!

Amazing I know.

I think the dark look of the minis is due to my (perhaps) excessive use of black washes on the armor and brown washes on the clothes.

Back then I literally had no idea how other people painted minis, so I had no idea about the \"bright\" look of the GW/Heavy Metal folks. I also had never heard of wet blending.

Maybe I\'ll try to reshoot the pics with a \"real\" camera next time, plus some others old and new.
