Mousillon Bretonnians PLEASE HELP ME GUYS !!!!

So there I was sat at the end of a painting marathon painting 12000 points of demons to add to my ever expanding chaos army and I decided I needed a change..
I looked through the books and through this very site and narrowed it down to 2 Bretonnians or undead..
I have always promised myself a bretonnian army but after painting 6000 points worth on their release for a couple of GW stores was always a bit daunted about hitting them again..
anyway a little bit of background caught my eye.. Mousillon the cursed realm...So here was an idea to paint the army so that with the addition of a couple of different units either way I cold field the army as either...

Anyway the idea is a little bit Pirates of the carribean style..Wherever the models are in light they are living bretonnians wherever in shadow they are well..dead.

The models in the command carry the light source so as you go back the models die more..

Have a look at the pics below and please give me any ideas you have to improve this effect..I want to keep the colours of the heraldry so don\'t want to completely Light Source it out but am keen on emphasising the dark / light differences.

any thoughts at all guys would be cool.. more photo\'s on request also will post the footguys wip soon.
cheers in advance.

 That\'s an awesome effect, what a great idea! It looks pretty effective to me, but I think the blending and freehand could be smoother. Really well done :)

Happy painting

cheers the freehand is due to be outlined and highlighted as and when the final colours where the shadows fall is decided..

Very cool idea. Great job pulling it off too. Are these still WIP? Like Bill said some of the painting could be smoother but if you\'re painting a whole army thats pretty good, I know my armies aren\'t near that quality.

Yeah these are WIP got a lot of them to go so far have got to this stage 3 x 12 knight units ,, 2 x 25 men at arms which I will post soon and the building stage of 3 pegasus.. Planning a reverse Grail Reliquae where the usual corpse is replaced with a living model bathed in light being carried by dead dudes.. as well as a part undead Hippogryph..

Wow.

This is the sort of stuff I love! Very ingenious and clever, and really adds character to your unit.

Honestly, this is fantastic.

It would be very cool for you to do the a mini with half a zombie head, and half a regular bretonnian, to really emphasize the lighting.

i\'ve been trying a couple like that..Struggling a bit but getting there ..discovered a difference in scale with the components at this stage so looking to Greenstuff zombie face halves on some of the guys..The knights are all keeping full helmet\'s though as part of the background I read said the shamed nobility of mousillon never raise their helmets..(helps me out loads as well but will definitely try it on some of the horses..

Just about the coolest idea I\'ve ever seen...

Damn!

Maybe transfer the Lightning effects to the minis behind more, so that you can see where the border goes..

Also, remember that a light source goes out in a circle, not flat straight, so it would go a bit more to the middle of the unit and a bit less to the sides of the unit... I can draw a diagram if you want :D

That would be cool...
The shadows are sort of falling in a rough circle at the minute trying to show it on this overhead of the knights ...
but yeah any help would be appreciated..

The shape is hopefully going to be less round on the men at arms as the front rank is gonna be really braziered up right across..

That\'s taking it to the next level!

I\'ve never seen anyone do OSL for a unit before. Work hard on envisioning it as OSL. Identify where the shadows fall, where the transitions are etc. Right now I think you have some lit areas that I believe would be in shadow.

But beyond OSL you\'ve taken the concept even further by making not only a color change from the OSL but a physical change to the mini. That\'s fantastic. This is one of the best ideas I have ever seen.
Once you\'ve got down where the shadows lie you can really work on the decay. I imagine the transition will be very difficult to pull off and I don\'t envy you, but good luck. You\'ve got a winner in my mind.

OSL unit diagram

oslunit.jpg

There you go.

I just took a simple lensflare and put it at the centre of the unit, then I summed up the lightning as it went further and further out to the sides..

Now, depending on how far you want it to go to the sides, it will go further towards the back as well. As you can see in picture 2, a rank of knights on a straight line would recive more of the light from the same strength source... pretty obvious really, but still :D

Hope it helps :)

But of course once you start putting soldiers into that field, they create shadows going out from the white, and anything in the shadow would be dead.

That\'s really helpful Seraphim and and I am currently looking at the models individually while tying in the units..
The good news is it hasn\'t taken long to get to this stage the bad news is a hell of a lot more to go ..Thanks for both inputs ..
agree vincegamer the other models will play their part in casting shadows..

I am currently trying to find a simple small lamp stand to try lighting from the front in darkness to get an idea where light will fall..That diagram really helps though..cheers.

really glad I could be of assistance. Remember it\'s totally up to you how strong you want the source to be.

A lamp directly shining in on the unit would be a really good idea, and would give you a hint how to do the shadowing on the units behind. But also you need to bear in mind, how far up the lightsource is!

This is quite a project, but I don\'t doubt in the end you will have a frikkin awesome army! :D Post more as you come along alright ? I wanna follow this as close as I can :D

In the OSL classroom thread I posted a pic where I took the end off of a mag light and held it where the source is in the picture. I photographed it in a totally dark room.
You can try the same. Mag lights are very bright and the bulb very small so it’s easy to place it where your source will be in the unit. They are also not too expensive and very useful outside the mini world.

not a problem will keep posting and bear the position and height of the light source in mind..
next part I am doing is the reliquae..
I\'m a little unsure about Grail Knights want to do them so I have the option but I have a feeling they would be totally untouched by the deadness ??
Oh well lot\'s to go..
cheers

Simply superb, looks awesome. I would say don\'t sweat the details and stick to what you are doing it works great.
