Musings from the Warp ..... big log of Chaos

Hi all,

Lately I\'ve found working on my own stuff abit \"meh\" and so most of my SciFi projects have been languishing.

Add to that the site where my project log\'s were posted on has gone bust so I\'ve lost a lot of work and ref / inspirational material.

Anyway I\'m hoping to get a bit of a kick start again by posting here .....

A couple of points before we start tho - my stuff is really all for either my own (or if commission customers) wargaming use. I\'ve never really been asked to do a display piece for anyone and just cant seem to find the time to do one for myself.

Anyway as a few people have asked about how my Chaos predator
Cmon Chaos Predator was painted I thought I\'d start with that.

When we started the project we were looking for a colour scheme that would be easy to apply on an army scale but also look good enough for a bit of a \"wow\" factor. On top of that we didint want to go \"over the top\" with spiky bits. I suppose we wanted a dirty/used look to vehicles and troops. I mean in my view the Chaos dudes aint gonna be big on using soapy water and polishing rags now are they?

So first up are some wip shots.

Original model, primer coated with Tamiya \"Rattlecan\" TS3 Dark Yellow

Next it was base coated with lyanden Darksun

Note everything is brush painted (cept the primer) ...... I\'m too old to be starting wiv one of dose new fangled aribrush thingies .....

cheers

Sounds good. Its cool to see how you painted the Rhino, and allso your other stuff.

Keep them coming.....stu.....

At the same time as starting the Predator I started a couple of Marine Wips ... painted basically exactly the same way as my tanks, I tend to break a lot of \"current\" painting rules by drybrushing and using alot of washes and Inks.

Anyway, heres a Test std bearer. On a plain base as we\'ve yet to come up with a suitable basing theme .... you\'ll see that as a trend I\'m afraid, basing is one of my weakest areas ..... also the helmet on the std will get redone/finished at some stage - its crap basically.

Thnx Scott ........... :)

And the next couple of painting stages for the Predator.

First up I apply a pre shade to all the panel lines and edges. As u can see from the pics it doesnt have to be tidy! I use a mix of thinners, Black paint and Chestnut Ink.

The next step is to drybrush back the main colour to blend in the shade. I also progressively add a little Bleached Bone to the Darksun and work this into the centers of the panels and edges of flat plates. This simulates bleaching of the paintwork by sun and rain etc ... also as the finish to this stage I highlight the edges using a soft flat brush and neat bleached bone.

Hey the stuff is looking really good, its nice to see some techniques for painting up a good looking army quick.

How long do you spend on a mini/squad/tank??

Hi matey, the predator was probably about 3-4 hrs assembly and 6-8 painting, not including drying time. The primer was left overnight as it\'s Enamel based and needs time for the solvents to evaporate and the paint to harden up. I also left it overnight after shading and before drybrushing back the base coat.

As for the Std bearer he took about 4hrs or so. Dont know if thats quick or not for that level, got no real idea how long other painters spend on tabletop/rank n file stuff.

Nah mate - I just paint a lot of tanks, well over 100 last year .....

And the next stage on the Predator.

This stage is pretty much where it all happens. I dont have detailled SBS pics here as when I painted this I wasn\'t really thinking about that. However hopefully the pics do give reasonably good idea of the process.

First part is to outline the hatches and panels. Using a fine brush and an approx 90/10 mix of thinners and black paint. It better to use a couple (or more) coats rather than one dense one so u can keep control of the paint. You want a fine shade line, not Liz Taylors eyeliner

Then I wash around panels and plate edges using a mix of thinners/black paint/chestnut ink. Keep this very well thinned down and brush out to avoid \"tide\" marks. Again use as many layers as required to get the effect, u can always add but its a devils job to go back if u overdo it.

Lastly streaks and water marks are added. Using the same mix but in varying strengths.

This is damn good for tabletop! Like that you describe the techniques and colors you use, makes it much easier to copy :D

Looks great man. Glad to see someone is doing the same muted paint idea I\'m doing with my lizards. Base coat your color, wash brown black(heavy brown) Drybrush back up to the original color than blend bleached bone. Good stuff.

Next bit of armour being worked on. We wanted to make something a bit bigger than a dreadnought and also didnt like the standard Defiler. So with a bit of prodding and poking came up with this some time ago, The Lord of War class dreadnought.

The plan is to make two, the next one being a bit more of a close combat varient. It a pretty straight forward kitbash of a defiler with a quad cannon mod and some exhausts from a 1/48th Hind. And dont panic the rest of the Hind isnt going to waste - its going to make an attack flyer for my Brits n Space marine regt.

Same process as for the Predator, base coat is lyanden Darksun. The Helm and armoured chest plate are removed to allow painting. Not too sure whats going to go yellow vrs steel or trim colours yet so it pretty much all gets the yellow at this stage
