My "comeback" miniature

I had a bit more contrast in at first Andy but I didn't think it fit the more realistic approach I was trying to achieve. With the historicals I am attempting to work with more reserved tones than typifies fantasy style figures. Not to say high contrast is a bad thing though, I will go back at the end and touch up some of the ares that need a bit more depth.

Here is today's update

Right arm finished, although I made define the bicep just a touch more. I also painted the shield hand, but didn't want to bother sticking on the shield for the pic.

Looking at the pic I am not entirely happy with the inner right torso so I am going to go back and have another go at it. The muscle groupings just don't look natural to me, time to study up on physique a bit more.

BTW let me know if you think the photo is over/under exposed, I am playing around with the lighting trying to dial in exposure.

Fantastic work. Really very realistic. When I made a detail of hand, looks like a photo of hand. Thanks for sharing.

It has been a little while since I posted an update. Since I am about half way through I figured it would be a good time to do so.

I just finished the loin cloth and laid my base coat down for the back of the pelt. I am still a little unhappy with the fur on the loin cloth, so I may do some further touch ups.

Lovely skin you got going on there. Looks very life like, looks like you've got some red glazes that really aid the effect. Fur looks good to me, if you aren't satisfied though you may want to make a very diluted glaZe to darken the shadows or conversely hit the tips of a few bristles of fur with a brighter highlight. Maybe even put some colored glazes into the fur.

Thanks for the comments :)

I appreciate the input Kharnath, I finally figured out that it was lack of contrast between the light and dark area that was bothering me. I added a bit more red into the lighter area and green into the darker and that resolved the problem.

You may want to hit the contrast on the gold too, whiter reflex's and dark brown/black in the shadows. Great free hand.

Absolutely love the tattoos. You pulled off the look of a body full of tattoos quite well, without actually painting super tiny details. Basically, you've succeeded in fooling the eye into thinking there are tiny details all over his skin. And good choice with picking such a blue, ink-like tone. This is realism.

Love that scene! a top job. Great shine on the sword and helm, I think the shield could be a little brighter but looks great non the less. I think just pushing the contrast is the big thing, Im still working on that its a gradual thing.
Base is fantastic, exciting to see so much detail and variation that looks real.

****Sticking foliage on is not enough!****

I also put some wash and paint on both the moss and grass, dark green and brighter green then a few spots of 97% white with mix of the bright green, Emphasise! ( I only used pure white on the face this time) Then added some water effects mixed with the same dark and bright green. The water is not green in the picture I just took the liberty to make it more interesting(I hope).

Paint on :)

Thanks for the input Canny, I will definitely apply it next time.

I have a real hard time with contrast. High contrast I think looks terrific on a fantasy piece, but can be easily overdone on a realistic piece. I really do have a hard time make the distinction though as to how far to push it.

Great tip on the foliage! I am almost tempted to go back and pass the glaze over the plant matter. I did glaze and use pigment on the twigs, but the smaller stuff I left alone.

You can really see the how real the rocks, twigs and log are. the pigments worked great!(and the ground) I think you should go back, it will make them look more harmonised.

I know what you mean about realistic v fantasy, Look up baileys work he makes contrast on realistic look amazing.
