My First Commision on ancient lead

So a friend of mine is a die hard D&D gamer. You may think your friend Saul down at Gamer\'s Emporium is a die-hard dice chucker, but in reality he is a complete poser compared to this guy. He started in 1979, and has never stopped. 72 hour marathon sessions are not uncommon for him. He lives in a shack in the middle of the woods so he will never get interrupted and his entire house is devoted to gaming.

Well he\'s not as crazy as he sounds, in fact hes a blast to hang out with. ANYWAYS he has a massive collection of ancient lead. Grenadiers and Ral Partha\'s dated 1979, some even older. He cant paint worth anything and has given me a nice selection of some older pieces to paint for him.

Most of these are fairly worn down from use and gaming and storage, but I\'m gonna try my best to make em look really good.

He also said I can keep whichever ones I want. yay greed!

As I was leaving his house to take the minis back and start on em, his young daughter Karma asked me to please paint her favorite mini of her dad\'s:

This is just the first of several boxes filled to the brim with these minis, and many of these are one out of 4 or 5 copies he owns.

I\'m kinda excited. Could be the lead exposure talking though.

I\'m planning on cleaning them up nicely first. years of use have left who knows how much skin oil on these guys, so I\'m gonna strip em as though it were paint (not too harsh)and attempt to repair things like smashed noses, etc.
The paint job may not be a golden daemon due to some pretty rough shape on a couple, but I\'ll make him happy, and his daughter will love her princess.

\"Matt, could you paint her for me?\"

\"No problem at all! What colors would you like her?\"

\"Blue and purple\"

\"Blue and purple she shall be!\"

Sometimes I like kids. especially when they can talk and be interesting.

I happen to know where you can get a new, non-bashed-up version of that nice sculpt... the rights were sold by Grenadier a while ago and that mini, and others, are being cast again! They can be bought through Mega Miniatures, aka eBay user \"jdlauck\".

Well a good wash of any sort of anti-bacterial detergent will help a great deal.
The noses on a few of the first figures you displayed are showing damage, so they\'ll need a bit of tender loving care.

Also can I suggest that due to the miniatures age you may want to make sure that you seal the underside of the bases to prevent any potential for \"Lead Rot\".

Lives in the middle of the forest and plays D & D for 72 hours straight... that sounds like some kind of world record. Now I am interested to see if I cannot find any info on the longest D & D session.

he does those 72 hour sessions a few times a year lmao

and Dragonsreach, thanks for the tip. I\'m gonna try to try to just push the nose back out a bit but if worse comes to worse, green stuff. He\'s not concerned with keeping them original, so i can improve on em to fix the nose etc.

What would you recommend to seal? I usually just use a layer or two of Rust-o-leum White primer on my current minis. Should I shoot em with some clear Krylon first or something?

My thought would be to primer them then as good measure a smooth coat of black.
If you can work out a way to varnish them to prevent Table Damage to the underneath so much the better.

ok gotcha, most of these will benefit from a black basecoat anyways, and i can be sure to seal the bottom nicely. thanks for the tips, hate to make some feel old but im 30 and when i started painting as a kid we had already gone over to white metal. Gotta seek out the wizened advice for lead.
