My first miniature: a skeleton

@10 ball: good one. I don't have the Devlan Mud wash, but I'll heavily water down some Bestial Brown and use that as a wash. I've heard people whipe away the wash on raised areas, anyone done that before. I guess that's just to keep the highlights visible.

@SkelettetS+MightyChad: sharp eye, I now saw it too. Backside of the upper right arm. Darn, I thought I double-checked him completely before I started painting. OK, from now on, no more backside pics! :curse:

Hi Tim, successive layers of white won't get you where you want to be (I know it's not quite what you did but it's how the end result looks to me).

Black basecoat.
Heavy drybrush Black 50/50 Codex Grey (or any other mid tone colour).
Drybrush Codex Grey (if you cover all the previous layer you've been too heavy handed).
Light drybrush Codex Grey 50/50 Bleached Bone.
Feather drybrush on upper areas only with Bleached Bone/Skull White.
Wash.

You need the gradation (?) of the colour through the layers. Successively lighter coats of the same colour won't allow enough black to show through from the basecoat.

On this guy, a Badab Black wash should go on, it's a good time to get to see how "magical" the effect is. Some places will be far better defined & shaped, others will still be frustratingly vague (teeth). If you're using watered down paint add a teensy bit of washing-up liquid to act as a surface tension breaker. When the wash has dried, inspect the mini for tidemarks & paint more wash colour into those recesses!

Bestial Brown is quite orange, I'd suggest stirring a bit of black in to darken it (or dark green/blue).

As far as blasting through loads of Skeletons with drybrushing goes, well, yep, that's it! You've done the basics, now repeat on 250 more figures :D Next let's see some controlled brushwork on the axe & shield. Nice neat basecoats and a bit or darklining should do the trick :good:

Cheers, B.

PS Moldline on underside of axe blade? I hate it when people point them out to me. Stupid, stupid moldlines! If you paint on your metals it shouldn't show, if you drybrush it will ;)

It's an easy fix though, just scrape it off with a hobby knife. It's just drybrushing, and will be easy to repaint.

Will do!

@BPI: thanks a lot, yours and other people's constructive critiques really make me look/try different things.

I tried a combo of Badab Black, Scorched Earth and some drops of water. Result:

Not completely satisfied, it's a bit too brown/orange for my taste. Planned next step: light drybrush Codex Grey 50/50 Bleached Bone.
