My first post - just a stupid question

my question is:

what do your friends/relatives/parents think about your hobby?

generally when i say \"i paint minis\" they do not understand, then after kilos of explanation they say \"oh you just paint small soldiers!\"... gash! :flame:

the rest didn\'t get it either i got a lot of flak from them until they saw some done well.

but they still don\'t get it really.

Oh yeah, a space of my own is impossible to find (for painting yes, an appartement isn\'t a problem, only the money is)

I simply don\'t tell people anymore because I can\'t be arsed trying to explain for the umpteenth time, when you know they just wont get it. That\'s why CMON is so good, everyone here has got the bug as well.

I only talk to family/friends about it if they ask me about it, because I also can\'t be bothered trying to explain it.

My mother is always moaning at me to \'get those models off the shelves and dust them!\' but with well over a thousand up there I don\'t think that will be happening any time soon

Low pressure compressed air dusts quite well.

I\'ve learned that you don\'t tell people without an example handy. It\'s easier to say I do this and point to a figure than to try and explain it. And when they ask why I do it and they don\'t understand my answer I just point them to the prices you can get on ebay.

GF\'s have been largely indifferent, although one did have a go and was pretty good.

Friends are an entirely different matter as many are roleplayers, wargamers or GW store staff, even some of my work mates get it, because they like LOTR.

The wife (she who must not be crossed) used to play D&D with us, so she is cool with it. (she just doesn\'t need to know how much I have \"invested\" in minis.) My oldest kid now plays :bouncy: and want me to paint everything for her & her group. :bouncy:

I try to get them to paint their own, with limited success. However, one of my daughters friends does seem to have the knack

Now, to answer the question. I\'m divorced so that eliminates one problem. Then again, I\'ve always dabbled in art and creative outlets, so friends and family take \"quirky behavior\" in stride - and this includes painting \"silly little men\"

My older son, the jock, thinks that both his younger brother and I are nerds & dorks, so our mutual obsession comes as no surprise to him.

And of course, my younger son is a frequenter of these forums as well, so no worries there. :bouncy:

lollollollol haha, sorry, bu that one cracks me up

For me, everyone knows I\'m artistic, so I really paint a picture of it being an art form, thus I can answer any \"Why do you do it?\" questions with \"why do people paint paintings?\" because all the other sorts of art are pretty accepted anyway.

All my friends either are into it, or I\'ve explained enough about it that they\'re fine with it. My mum is great and always wants to support my art and such, so she really encourages it, even if there\'s some parts she doesn\'t understand. My dad loves it and always says he\'s collect an army if he had the time, so he\'s always the first person i show a mini to when it\'s finished. Also, I\'ve explained the whole history, so we can have chats about it.

As for girlfriends, well *cough* haven\'t err, had such experience....
though my friend said that his girlfriend converted him, and now he gets how lame it is, he\'s also now a prick who is constantly trying to look cool and wear and buy whats popular.

Ex wife - hey that looks neat, can I try (followed by disappointment when I didnt rant and rave because she was better than me)

Current GF - You have to paint your disply cases to match and put doors on them to keep the dusting down to a minimum - and QUIT PAINTING WHEN YOU ARE ON THE COMPUTER!!!! You leave figures everywhere.

lol I have exactly the same problem, usually people either say that with looks that means that they think I\'m crazy, or they say it in a tone that says \"poor guy, he has nothing to do with is life\"
But anyway, I\'m getting used to it so now I just skip the part where I try to explain it and just say that i paint small soldiers.

Well, it seems I´m some sort of an exception in here, most people approve my hobby, one of my best friends even helps me (he just makes the photos, but wihtout them, I wouldn´t be on this page) - my parents are glad that i´m doing this, although they often tell me I should rather concentrate on learning(just making my Abitur)
Unfortunately, wemen seem to be exception - I know many of you are female and i´m glad you are, but when I tell a girl at school I paint, they just look at my like saying \'Oh God, how pathetic \'- sad that is
