My Oz 05 GD entries, Legolas and Saurus

Trevor

Brushlicker and Freak!
Finally got my entries back (I\'ve been sick, so didn\'t make it to the finals).

Legolas won silver, yay! :bouncy: Rather large and not so good pic, I need camera lessons methinks.

Saurus Lord made finals, yay! But didn\'t place. Better pic for him :)

Comments, thoughts, tips and marriage proposals gratefully received...

Cangrats! Nice job on Legolas, what did you string the bow with?

As fo the Sarus I think he looks to mono chromatic..he needed some color variation or colorful spotting to make him more stand out.

Legolas is ace, congrats on the silver :D.

With the saurus, its a really nice model, but I think the base lets it down a tiny bit unfortunately.

Noice Trevor, very noice indeed :D

Legolas looked better in person though, stupid cameras. :)

Do you have any closeups of his eyes? I heard his eyes are really nicely done so I wanna see em! :D

Trev I think both minis are awsome. The Saurus base might look better with a lizard or some moss but its still good. I thing the bottom on the base would have looked better black or grey instead of brown.

I was just talking to a mate about my entries next year and I was interested to see what Id be up against. Oh well it will be good for the experience. They are both fantastic paint jobs I gave them both a 9

I spoke to one of the judges last weekend (Andrew Long) and he elaborated on the placings for the LOTR figures. The Boromir by Leigh Carpenter was ahead of the pack due to the standard. Without the standard he indicated it would have fallen into the pack. He indicated that Trevor\'s got the nod due to the face and hair overall (not just the eyes). he was also a fan of the colours. Zordana\'s figure was third because of the way the colours worked, and he indicated the touch of blue on the base was a good touch. He indicated it was very close between second and third. I don\'t think the eyes were the difference.

Thanks for the comments

@ Mick Yeah and I had to paint each one, no helpfully pre-coloured ones for me.

@ Zordana Not sure if these are any better, but I changed the white balance and there is a close up of his face, unfortunately it makes him look like a beaten up boxer.

NEW PIC

@ Ogrebane Hmmm interesting, maybe I\'ll try a black base, I find its always tricky getting base colours right.

@ Paintingploddy I\'m surprised he liked the face (see above about beaten up boxers) and the hair was a flippin pain.

The way the face looks is because of the sculpt (or cast) rather than how you painted it. Eyes are great so is the hair. The base color should complement the rest of the base and I just thought the brown and grey clashed. If you want to know what colors work well ask your girlfroend/wife/female friend. They know these things.

There has been some discussion elsewhere whether the eyes were the difference between the two figures during the judging. I wasn\'t wearing my glasses so I can\'t say one way or the other which had the better eyes. I do like the work on legolas\'s face. Makes him look less of a pretty boy.

I was too short to make out the faces on the Saturday. I was on my tippytoes but was scared id topple over onto the demon table so I gave up trying to look at the lotr winners :D

Initially I was told by someone that the reason I got bronze was because arwen was slightly cross eyed.

The official feedback I recieved had a couple of other points, though. A degree of flatness in certain spots in comparison to others. Skintone too dark. The colour on the ruffles on her arms looking thin (really not sure what that means though lol). Also that Lego was smoother overall and the colour\'s more vibrant.

What you said earlier is interesting, that a standard can actually win gold for a miniature that would otherwise fall back in the placings.
*takes notes for next year* lol
Do you have any idea what he meant by me being third because of \"the way the colours worked\"?

Thanks for the extra pics, Trevor :)

Your colour selection worked. It was the colour selection, and the basing which put you into the back (is the way I understood what he said). Those factors seperated it from the figures below and gave it the wow factor that got it into 3rd place. In particular he indicated there were four or five models which were technically very good, yours had enough going for it to beat those other models.

The standard was very well done on Boromir, especially compared to the other versions on show. I\'ll be doing a lot more freehand in the coming year to try and strengthen my lack of ability/imagination in that area, I think it opens up a lot of possibilities.

The other interesting part was his indication that a conversion is not necessarily going to beat a stock model. He seems to like seeing a stock model painted well (despite having a case full of great conversions).
