National Styles

I\'m still such a new painter, and as such havent got a personal style yet. There are so many nice examples I\'m trying to mimic in order to learn techniques.
On top of that, I\'m a Brit living in the USA. lol

There is a lot here I hadn\'t really thought about but is actually really interesting to me. I think I\'m going to update my initial post on this thread as more information and opinions get posted just to keep track of the top painters representing each style and the significant characteristics of that style.

So is there an Australian style?

@Ritual:

Yes, there are hockey miniatures. Scary, but true. There seems to be an entire sports line, and not just the \'blood bowl\' stuff. I\'ve only seen them once or twice, and have no idea who the manufacturer is, though.

Well, for French style I\'d have put Jacques Alexandre Gillois, Thomas David and Thomas barse... (all three on cmon, being known as jacques-alexandre, thomas.davidtm and thomas).

Most definately!! And I didn\'t mean to imply Tammy was \'English\', maybe just her style.. (that\'s my story, and I\'m sticking to it!)

now, in my defense, when I first noticed Eric\'s post last night, he just had countries listed, no names or styles. I just don\'t want to look like I was being a parrot!!
;)

This is kind of interesting to me. Recently on Jenova and another forum that I frequent, I was told by two different folks that I had a very \'cartoon/comic book\' way of painting.

I wasn\'t sure if I should have been offended or not, but I\'ve come to think of it that way too actually, even with my latest work (which I\'ll post here after the Wereshark contest).

thats very true...

I think I just paint too. There is no conscious decision for me to paint with a specific style, it just happens.

I think most of my stuff is darker, and I do tend to look for realism, but I\'m not English.

Although, I did just recently have an English Muffin and some tea.

Being English isn\'t contagious is it?lollol

I believe that currently the Iraqi Style is defines by \"SteelCult\". Only appropriate that it be defined by an invading American isn\'t it?

On a more serious note: Do we have anybody in South America??? As far as I can remember, Errex in Mexico City is the closest. Anyone else??? If so, if you\'re lurking out there, please sand up and wave.

\"Sand up and wave\". Sounds like you\'ve been spending too much time at the beach. lol

hm.. this is an interesting question. i think the styles changes somewhat. But you can definately speek of a french style and perhaps a US style too. Even though there are probably more exceptions to the rule than there are applications.

The swedish style, huh? I\'m swedish.. I can\'t however really see the coherency of us.

Anja
Anders
Jonas Ekestam
Martin Sahlin..

(does anyone know anymore wellknown, Swedish painters?)

have all very different styles. To my eyes anyway.. but I\'m swedish ;)

Break the French mold..

Bragon is one of my favorite artists here, I do believe he\'s also French but his style doesn\'t seem to fit what seems to be the stereotype. Of the 77 pics in his gallery, I see lots of bright, bold colors,.. more of what falls into the \"American\" category.

Here\'s just a few examples:

Marissa
Inquisitor Diorama
Parsifal

I guess France may have to deport him! :D

I think the typical French characteristic is \'being unnaturally bloody awesome\', and Bragon definitely has that! ;)

Wonder if there\'s a difference between USA West coast and East coast styles. Maybe it has to do with what\'s on the television. ^_^

And I think I would categorize \"The Rest of the World\" as \"Better Than Me\". ;)

Australian style? Well going by previous GDs its a mix of styles, neither NMM or metallics take precedence, and the overall slant is towards realistic I think. I can tell you what its not, its not like the French stuff and we don\'t tend to get the \"cartoony\" Bobby Wong style.

As for examples, Victoria is the best known on CMON, but Glen Lamprecht has dominated the GDs and there are a few others here (can\'t remember their sigs offhand).

No, I\'m not. But I\'m from Russia alright :) Unfortunately, I do not know any other painters of Armenian origin ...
