Need advice on sculpting materials

For my next trick, I will need to create (as part of the base) a 54mm scale version of an atom bomb in the style of the Fat Man. That's way too big to make entirely out of GS/Milliput/Fimo. Ideas?

i would suggest carving out of foam, the dense stuff, not expanded, you can sand it close then cover with apoxie sculpt of magic sculp. smooth it and sand it then add detail. did something similar with a plane carriage once, it's really relaxing and fun

Perfect use for small bits of excess putty when doing other sculpting projects! But you can make a core out of anything that the putty will stick to, e.g. wooden coffee-stirrers (which you can obviously get for free) laminated together and then sanded to shape. Should be able to get pretty close to the final size, with only a thin skin of putty necessary to finish off. If you started with wooden dowel you could get away without having to use any putty at all in theory.

You can probably find a wooden or a plastic egg about the right size to cover in putty and add fins to the "thinner" end. Dollar stores are overloaded with them lately.

I actually went and found a bunch of those plastic eggs on lunch. Just about the right size, and 50 cents for 6 of em (after easter sale!). I'll need to scratchbuild the tail section, and the nose needs a little tweaking, but it should just work. Cheers again.
