Need some help with colors - WIP Mongo

I am working on this mini and I am just about finished with the skin, but I am not sure what colors I should paint the rest of him! I was thinking a cool grey purple color for the weapons but I am not sure. Also I cannot decide what color to paint his armor segments or the straps. Any help is appreciated :)

The things he's holding look like blocks of concrete to me, maybe paint them as such? Metal structural foundation rods sticking out the sides?

They are cement blocks, you are right, but I feel like they need something to make them more interesting to look at. I was thinking of coating them with liquid mask and painting on it with a lighter color so that when I take off the liquid mask the block will look like they have a flaky paint-like texture on them. Does this sound like a good idea? Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

you did a really great job on the skin...

for the colours maybe a nice blue/turqois colour would contrast nicely with the warm skin. the model to me seems somewhat cartoony and so sharp contrast of colours seems pretty fitting for that cartoony style.

just a thought for the concrete blocks that may contribute to some interest is to maybe paint some sort of weathered looking font on them, like he pryed the concrete blocks off a a military compound and there are some sort numbers, or arrows painted on those blocks, just so there is not some mass of grey on your mini.the pic i attached is not exactly the best representation of what i mean but its the best i could find... looking great so far though man.

So I tried out some liquid mask and made it look like there was some kind of paint over the blocks that had been peeling off. Now I am trying to make it look dirty and abused so I am in the middle of that. I glazed over the blocks with warm browns to give them a bit of a rusty look and I am still working out what else I should do to them. I really like the number idea and I think I will try that on his actual armor plates. Again, any ideas are welcome :)

agree with some numbers or graffiti but they would have to be weathered appropriately... looks awesome so far

Great job with the peeling paint effect. I'd glaze over the Paint bits a bit more to make them lighter so there's no mistake it's actually peeling paint, it looks a bit too mottled just now, like the block is just a rusting piece of metal. Rust marks coming from the actual metal bits would be cool, y'know how rust colours sort of bleed into it's surrounding area when it's left for a while.

I love the smooth blending on the skin. When it comes to liquid Mask btw I personally try to steer clear from it as often I have found in the past you end up missing some here and there, or worse it pulls off some of the paint.

Holy crap that graffiti looks way cool! I like that idea now that I have a visual. My only problem is that the big cement slab in front of mongo has those attachment apparatus' covering up the prime real estate for a good graffiti freehand. Maybe I can do the numbers on the block in the front and the graffiti on the block facing towards the ground in the back? It can be like an easter egg or something :D

I went in a different direction from the previous pics. I cleaned off the paint on the blocks and started over. I painted them real dark brown and then used a brush filled with different darks colors and blew on the bristles to create a rust texture. Then I applied some liquid mask to certain areas and primed the blocks grey and painted them a light blue grey color and shaded with a dark grey and brown. Here:

Now that I have seen the great graffiti I think I am going to paint over the the shading on the front block and put either the graffiti design or numbers on the front. Let me know what you guys think and thanks so much for all the feedback. Also I think when I am finished with everything I may do some colored glazes to the skin to make it a bt more interesting as well. Also I think if I do the purple graffiti I may have to make is mohawk purple too.

heres what i did with graffitti. it worked pretty well. you can also write your own graffitti using "graffitti writer" online. and then go from there. i would also paint over the little bits with the metal on it and chip the area to show someone spray painted all over it. and go back to yellow man, the yellow and purple complementary aspects combined with the warm skin tone will really set the miniature off.

Looks good so far! I think the front block has too much stuff going on over it for a graffiti to look good. Possibly on the rear block... But I would go for something simpler, like that number idea.

May I ask where this mini comes from?

holy cow anders. your alive. how ya doin. lol. i see that to with all that junk going around it, but tbh, if i was tagging an area id just spray right over it. and imagine the bits of rust and oxidation coming off of it the way aliengod does his oxidation. i really think it could push the boundaries on awesome.

Yes, I'm alive! :) A bit rusty with my painting, but it should get sorted once I get firmly back into the saddle.

Holy crap. it's Anders! I was wondering why i have not seen you around lately. Ya I was thinking the same on the front block, too much going on. There is definitely room on the back one though. I will stick to a number on the front one. I am using the sentinel painted by automaton as a reference for how to make it look right.

@Uberdark: I am not sure how aliengod does his oxidation, haha. Also I will check out graffiti writer. I was thinking that it would be cool if I can find or create a nice design of Mongo's name using graffiti.

@Ritual: The mini is from Dark Age Games and the mini is Mongo :)

EDIT: One more thing. Does the color on his neck look too intense?

I like how it turned out. Now I just have to add some extra cracks, dirt, and some other effects and it should be good. Still figuring out the graffiti design. Pardon the second picture. The front block was washed out by my camera.

Also here is a funny video that always makes me laugh: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/537864

Also, any thoughts on what color the armor should be?
