Are they going on a table? If yes then a matte coat I think is a must. I double coat all my mini's in two layers of testors spray on dullcote as everythign I paint is bound for the table. Even if something wasn't, I would still use it as I don't think it negatively affects the finish and it helps keep the mini safe in transport and stuff.

Right know all i use is a matte clear coat. So i guess I should use a gloss the matte the gloss huh?
If you use your minis for gaming I'd suggest you use a durable gloss varnish first, then apply matt varnish on top (Testors Dullcoat is one of the mattest). Testors on its own isn't as durable as many gloss varnishes.

I seldom varnish my minis at all. I only paint for display, and my minis don't get handled a lot when they're finished.

But, to return to your initial question... It may be a good idea to photograph the minis prior to varnishing, especially if you use a matt varnish that isn't completely flat (most matt varnishes aren't).

And, from when I picked up this tip, having gloss first and then matte will help you tell when your gaming piece needs some maintenance. If you can see a glossy spot, that's where the matte has worn off and needs a new coat of matte.

I was curious it just seems that when I us the GW Matte Clear coat that it dulls the colors down. Most of my stuff and all that I paint for people are minis that get heavy use so I need a can of Gloss coat.

I have heard alot about Testors dull coat is it really that good?

Wow all the cool stuff out there for minis I have no clue about. I am just know moving from GW paints into the P3 range.
What are your opinions on the P3 range of paints.

P3 are great paints. They're very smooth and I find them very easy to handle. They tend to dry with a bit of shine, but usually I mix Vallejo Model Color with my P3 paints, either through shadows and highlights or I use a mix of P3 and VMC for base coat. The VMC paints are dead flat, so mixing P3 and VMC usually gives flat results. I love the earthy colours of the P3 range.

I have heard some people say they think the P3 paints are difficult to use, but that is not my experience. Might be worth to have in mind, though...

Not that I have painted in aaaages, but I varnish first simply because I use inks and they can dry pretty glossy

I'll echo Ritual's statement and say, yeah, they are really good. Took a little bit to adjust to them since I use RMS primarily, but once I got used to them I really liked them.

For varnish, pretty much like everyone else: Dull Cote.

Nope.
Thanks to the wonderful European Union we can purchase anythig we want at anytime.:rain:

However Antenociti's workshop is stocking it once again.

What was the deal with that ban? I heard something about it being impossible to get in Europe for a while, but never the reason why. And you have access to it again?

There were components, or one component, in Dullcoat (and a few other sprays, as well) that was banned in the EU. Testors re-formulated Dullcoat, so now it's OK to sell it again.
