neighbors that drive you crazy

I have a neighbor problem. I think the best way to solve the problem is if she were to just move away, but I don\'t see that happening any time soon. To be specific, she and her son sit on their back porch to smoke pot. I don\'t care, as long as my kids aren\'t in our back yard when they are doing it. Anyhow, while she and her dim-witted progeny smoke pot, my dogs may bark at the mailman or some kid walking down the alley. My neighbor gets angry about this, so she calls the cops. Mind you, this is usually between 10 am and 4 pm, and they don\'t work outside their home. So, the cops come over, stand on our property in plain sight of our dogs to time how long they bark. Of course the dog is going to bark at the man standing on their territory staring at them, and they bark for the requisite 15 minutes necessary to get me a $500 ticket.

I have done absolutely nothing to instigate this kind of treatment from her, and have never before had the cops called on me in my life. I don\'t say anything about them smoking pot, I don\'t say anything about her son dealing from their house, I don\'t say anything about his big loud night time parties, and I don\'t say anything about him running his 4 wheeler in circles in their yard during my sons nap time.

So far I have tried shock collars and citronella collars, and the citronella seems to be working, and I have not yet received one of those $500 tickets because the first time the cop tried to give me one he couldn\'t get his pen to work until he got frustrated and wrote \"VOID\" across the ticket, then it worked fine. The second time the cop told us that he hated coming to these kind of calls and he had another call he had to go to.

I don\'t want to start calling the cops on her because I don\'t want the situation to escalate any further, and I don\'t want to get involved in any silly tit-for-tat.

I was just curious how many of you have neighbors that drive you absolutely nuts, and if anybody has been successful at getting rid of them!

I have a neighbor that shares a fence with me. It\'s right on the property line and we share custidy of it. It\'s cheap, having been built by the builders when the houses where built. With the 40+ wind gusts we get on a regular basis here the fence blows down often.

Afew years ago (about 10) the fence fell down and Mr C was at work. I was unaware that the fence was down but I noticed the dog was barking so I popped my head out the back door to see what was going on. It seems my extremely red neck pro-dirt biker neighbor took it on himself to take the fence apart with out letting me know so I could bring the dogs in.

He shouted at me for a bit and then something snapped inside me. I went into some kind of out of body experience and started in on this guy, saying to him everything I\'ve ever in my life wanted to say to anyone. I was swearing like a fish wife, spewing phrases I didn\'t even know I knew. He turned white, took a few steps back, stood there for 15 mins because I just couldn\'t stop and finally told me to have my husband come see himn when he got home.

Now this is the guy whos kids chased my son home with sticks and rocks every day after school and who\'s only response was \"boys will be boys\".

Mr C came home, went over and the guy opened the door and hit him full in the mouth, expecting Mr C to drop like a rock. Mr C took a step back, grabbed his chest and placed him carefully on his living room floor and sat on him until he calmed down enough to talk.

In the end it all worked out but that\'s my stupid neighbor story. Not sure who was worse, him or me. I scared myself that day.

Well, other than neighbors who shot at us the worst experience I\'ve had is the family of very small people who live above us here in the complex - apparently they are raising elephants, rhinos, and hippos - cause it sounds like thats whats stomping around up there.

Both the one on my left and on my right are old people who have nothing better to do but cause trouble. One complains about my son playing basketball in MY yard as she is worried that the ball will go over and hit her window. My son is 8 and he shoots a smaller ball and we have a 6 foot fence while her window is on the second floor! My other complains about my blue paint getting on MY bricks that is in MY property. It\'s just a slight tint from my SM Ultramarine. Because of that she refuses to help me with my garbage can! And it\'s not that I was rude when the complained...I even apologize...cleaned up the paint and told the other one that I will pay if my son breaks something!

Why don\'t you tell you neighbors that you will call the cops about their pot if they continue to call the cops on you. If they stop bothering you...you\'ll leave them alone. Tell them that your brother is a police commissioner in San Francisco!

I\'ve been shot at with BB guns, gotten into a knife fight, had my house egged, gotten into all manner of fights, and been yelled at and insulted for no apparent reason.

I\'ve thought about it, and I\'ve thought about doing what liz did, too. When she calls I just want to answer the phone and :cussing: but I still desperately want to be a good neighbor. I\'ve talked to everybody else in the neighborhood, and nobody cares. One of my neighbors is the mayor, whom I know personally because I used to run the lab for several years in his medical practice. I sat in his office and talked to him about it, he thinks its kinda funny, and told me that he never even knew I had dogs until he took the garbage out and saw them in my back yard across the alley.

I did let her know when she first started this crap that I was not to be toyed with when she started trying to play some stupid neighborhood rumor game with me, and she left me alone for a few months after that. I had done a pretty good job of putting her in her place, and on the occasions when I have been confrontational, she won\'t answer her door or her phone. I just hope that the next time she calls me to complain about them I am in a rip roaring pissed off mood and unload on her. That would feel good.

I\'m getting soft. Don\'t even seem like the same person who started posting on this site a few years ago, busting heads in the freak bar...lol

Well my shitty neighbor was my own family parents an lil brother, he was dealing drugs having kids live out of their basement comming and going at all hours, in an attempt to stop the circus I ran kids out of the house for a day (after I consulted with my folks about getting their house under control) my lil bro called my mother at work bitched and moaned till she told me to leave. After she asked me that I told her the dopers dissappear or I would disown her. Well she picked the dopers, after that I got in their grill whenever they parked anywhere but her property. My aunt called the cops once to report underage drinking durring one party that was out of hand I called another time and ran shite heads out of my families area (it\'s my aunt, my uncle and his wife, my grandparents, me and at the time them) well my lil bro got arrested, got their house raided by the swat team, and now they\'ve lost their house and we don\'t got to see em anymore.

Personally next time they are out back smoking call the cops. Dopers don\'t get hints and they don\'t think. Your neighbor sounds like the worst kind only a total smuck would smoke pot with their kid. After that I would call the cops everytime say they are flaunting it on their back porch and you have kids and want it to stop.

If the kid is a minor report her smoking pot with him to child protective services, getting a minor hooked on drugs is certainly child abuse. If they get involved and find proff the kid will be off to a better home and mom will be in jail where she belongs. and you will be short one jackass neighbor.

Well, I had the neighbor who couldn\'t stop adding on to her house...not only did the entire property look like a big ass pile of crap but it was construction noises...ALL THE TIME.

Then I moved to an apartment and the neighbor to the right would yell and scream at his wife and young son...of course when he was at work, his wife would then yell and scream that the young son...nice going...parents of the year award to them!!!
That wasn\'t all though...to my left was miss nympho who enjoyed really really loud sex pretty much all the time. When I say loud, it sounded like a squawking parrot!!! The worst part is that her skinhead boyfriend (who constantly looked like he was ready to kill someone) liked to take strolls on their balcony after vigorous, loud sex...naked. So if you were unfortunate to be leaving the house just when they were finishing, uh, well try explaining that one to your kidslol The only silver lining to the story is that his white trash girlfriend was actually pretty hot and had a tendency to walk around in the house naked with the windows wide open and no drapes...that I didn\'t mind so much

I got nothing that really compares to any of the above.
My next door neighbour is usually a pretty decent guy. Unless there\'s snow.

We\'ve got 4 feet of snow on our lawns, from falls, ploughs, and insane amounts of shovelling.

I was out last saturday morning, shovelling, and he came out to yell at me because I was throwing some of the snow onto his yard.

Why was I doing this? Because the pile on the other side was so high that I couldn\'t get any more over it.

He stands there and yells at me for over 10 minutes, because I\'m adding an extra 2 inches of snow to the already 4+ feet that are there.

The other neighbours are coming out and laughing at him as I yell back about how two more inches isn\'t going to make the slightest amount of difference to his grass when the thaw comes.

He finally gave up when another neighbour, who owns a landscaping company, explained to him that snow insulates and protects the grass from the icy cold of winter, and is a GOOD THING (tm).

You poor people. I guess being large and intimidating has its advantages. People don\'t annoy me, not more than once anyway. Neighbours are like zombies, braindead and hungry. They don\'t know why they\'re mad, they just know they gotta crap on you.

I live in an apartment building now, and the f\'in hippy addicts hotbox the building several times a day, which is annoying. If I knew which apartment they lived in, or which apartment was smoking up at which time (there\'s at least one pot head apartment per floor), I\'d call the cops on them every single time. In fact, summer is comming up perhaps I\'ll just start calling 911 every time I smell it and let the cops figure it out. I\'m sick of it. I don\'t need to get stoned and neither does my son (not that you get stoned from the smoke in another apartment, but that\'s not the point). F\'in scumbags deserve to get some forced rear end loving prison style as far as I\'m concerned.

Seriously, call the cops on the pot head neighbour. The police \"should\" keep your identity secret, although I wouldn\'t count on it. They wont tell them who called but they\'ll pull up and knock on your door and talk to you just before or after they arrest the neighbours.

I don\'t really have any problem with someone who wants to get stoned or drunk, even if they do it all day every day. But when your \"hobby\" abuses me and forces me to inhale toxins and narcotics, then I have a problem with it.

Ok I have a problem with this.
To me this seems as if the Police are inciting the dogs to bark for 15+minutes and therefore you have a possible cause for appeal against the fine under \"entrapment\", as the dogs are acting according to their natural/ instinctive behaviour to defend their packs territory. So a Police officer will be seen as a threat therefore the dogs are reacting according to their territorial imperitives.

I have to be honest I hate the idea of shock collars, but I have used \"Shock treatment\" (ie a bucket of cold water) to stop annoying barking behaviour.
I have to sympathise with the second Policeman, most of the cops I know regard these domestic annoyance issues as something that should be worked out between neighbours and not have to be made an enforcement issue. Having said that in the UK we have Council officers who\'s job is to deal with noise issues such as this.

The way I see it is that if you really want to \"force the issue\" you will have to take measures and there are ways and means.
Either:-
Report the Dealing. (That means going legal and ending up in court as a witness).
Record the Dealing and deliver it unsolicited/unidentified to her house (You could get into realms of harrassment/ invasion of privacy. Plus if you do video it the angle will easily identify where it was taken from.)
Scare them. Get a good friend, preferably an out of towner who doesn\'t scare easily, or even if needed hire a P.I. (expensive option) to sit outside their house, blatently and make it look as if they are watching the house and the dealing.
Publicise the Dealing Drop leaflets/flyers advertising the drug dealing and watch the \"Fallout\".

Trouble is I don\'t know how legal the last two / three are.

i live out of town, but my mates neighbour bought the small car park down his road which everyone down the street uses for turning round in, builts a 5 foot gate round it and scared out his other neighbour. he also brought them to court when they went through the gate to get some of the stuff they had left in the car park.

compared to spaazzies neighbours however, this guys a small fry.

Wingmirrors broken on our car,

Brick put through car window,

xmas lights stolen, then dumped in the park,

letterbox ripped off,

back of van set fire to,

people surrounding house and banging on the windows (and climbng on garage roof),

car scratched,

xmas santa throun at windows,

windows egged,

fence graphtied,

tyres slashed on both van and car,

ive been beaten up outside of my own house,

my parents have been threatened,

my 7yr old sister has been threatened.

Not as bad as my old neigbors though, they sold and grew drugs in their house =)

unfortunatly they are both illigal in england. We do call the police, but usually nothing can be done, on one occation an arrest was made but there was insignificant evidence. We are moving soon so i dont really mind =)

I may not be the worlds best mediator but maybe the reason you are having so much trouble with your neighbour is because you are NOT saying anything.
Bad neighbours are just like little school bullies and are best treated as such.

No doubt they have a rather inflated opinion of themselves abd probably think it is a hoot they can get away with what they are doing. And to them you may seem to just be putting up with it.

Don\'t think of standing up for yourself as tit-for-tat pettyness. Get out of that mind frame. As neighbourhood bullies the one thing they don\'t want is for you to stand up for yourself. And like most bullies, will run and cry to their mommies the moment you speak up. Hence why you had some piece the last time you did so.

Remain calm and levelheaded but definately firm so they know you are serious about the consequences of them jerking your chain. So long as you don\'t do anything illegal they have no recourse.
Stand firm and the bully will move on to the next target,,,, that hopefully doesnt include you!

They cops are obviously starting to see some sense when being called out to your house.

meh we had druggie neighbours but he ended up stabbing his missus 10 times and leaving her with her head down the bog. the police sorted that out. and now we had 2 odd but pleasant crazy people living there
