NURGLE LANDRAIDER

This piece has been a really mystery to me.
First let me state, I am not griping or whining even though it may sound like I am.
It's sitting at 6.9 at the present moment. As I stated before this piece has been a real mystery. I think it is one of my best sculpting works and for look of realism. It has been entered into 2 Golden Demons and made first cut.
Please let me state again,...I AM NOT WHINING. The first time I brought it to a GD and took it out of the showcase, it got swamped with about 20 people wanting to take pictures and asking how I did it. The same reaction happen in the historical contests, people either avoid looking at it or really into it. I had a talk with two of the judges at a GD and both heaped praise on it.
At work my boss and friends has the same reaction, they think the piece is well done but it's the subject matter that scares people.
It reminds me of one of my very first scratch built figures, an 6 inch tall Terminator. I was at a Hobby Show and it was in display with tanks, cars and aircraft. I noticed 2 elderly ladies looking at a stamp vender's display about 20 feet away. I noticed one of the ladies looked over and stated starring at the model table. Both walk over and started looking at the Terminator. After about a minute, one looks at the other and says....I don't like it... and walked away.I was kind of hurt but after a while I thought to myself. Wait, this piece pulled 2 ladies from 20 feet away to look at it. Even thought the table was full of great looking and well built models It did it's job.
Is this the same situation? Is it too over the top or are my eyes clouded?
Thanks for looking and any comment welcomed.

I see what you mean. I think I like it. But, it is hard to tell. Particularly because the pictures can't provide as much as a good close examination could - it could be that the detailing is rich and well done, but could be too much, too busy, distracting and the chaotic fleshy elements not feeling organically part of the whole metallic tank.
The stage by stage progression on your site offers more of an insight, but reckon I couldn't really confidently state its masterful qualities without a good close ogling..

It does look really well sculpted and painted. Very realistic - if such a word applies to Nurgle!! To me, it's one of those where you may have out did yourself. There's looking real and looking cool. There needs to be more of a sense of design to it. Right now, there's a whole bunch of 'stuff.' Well sculpted/painted stuff but it's all jumbled up. My eye doesn't know where to look and gives up.

IMO it's justice that this piece made a first cut, but i think that even in the "nurgle-style" it's too much.
It's hard for me to recognize the LR under all this nurgle things.
And the fact that is glossy (or shiny) don't help to see the colors.

So, for me, just a little to much in the nurgle-style and too shiny to really see the job done on the colors (even if it's sometimes justified).

But if you have taken pleasure to made this piece, don't worry about any judgement.
you have learn a few things and, allways IMO that is important for the next miniature !!! ;)

keep up the good job !

Its job is to attract attention? well then it did its job in that case. Painting it pink and rigging up some strobing lights would have achieved the same result.

If your question is "Why isn't it scored higher?" than I'd say because people don't like it. I certainly don't, I'd say the other tank you painted is a lot better.

Marks are generally going down though. 8 seems very difficult to achieve these days, I have an old 2 page gallery with marks ranging from 7.5ish to 8.3, they're no better than the stuff I uploaded to this gallery. One of the 8.3 pics isn't even painted. They are Spase Marines so that might account for some of it, but still, I notice the trend throughout the submissions. My browse threshold has dropped from 7 to 6 because if I browse 7s I miss a lot of good stuff.

I paint my thumb.
Yummy.

It is very well executed, you do gore and slime at a great level, colors are right on for what it is.
But it's got nothing shiny or catchy, or cool for that matter. Some people, some, do vote over technical prowess, but the bulk of the voter vote for eye candy, and this is definitely not it.
Imagine, for example, you were trying to create a miniature piece of poo ( Just for example i'm not comparing your landraider to poo) and made it so well one could almost smell it.
Even if technically perfect, it would not fetch good scores.

The bike!!!!!

i think your landy is very good indeed even though its not the most pleasant thing to look at, a picture of road kill is still road kill even if van gogh painted it so dont get dis heartened if its not everyones cup of tea. I'VE SAID THIS BEFORE POST THE FIRST NATIONS BIKE or i'll come over there find you and you dont want that....only kidding post the bike though its one of the most spectacular things i've seen. oh my scores have creeped up over time if that's any consolation im sure yours will.

yes, you are griping and whining;)...

that aside, anyone who has seen the Golden Demon results knows you can paint and model with the best of 'em...
that said, not everything you produce is going to shake the world...
art is subjective, and photography is not the best means to present miniatures...

i personally don't really dig this Land Raider, but that's because i prefer the more graphic style of painting (as in a drawing style, with nice freehands and beautifully highlighted edges)...
thus, i didn't vote on this...
i will not vote someone down because i don't like the piece they chose to paint, as it's just my opinion...

just keep doin' your thing, hope the next one scores better, and take your lumps like a man;)...

cheers

Thanks for all the comments, really appreciate them.
I agree with all of what was said.
I know the picture sucks, I ask a friend who just bought one of those super duper 12 gajillion pixel HD Sony with GPS camera. We are going to do some proper pictures of, yes Cassar, the Bike will get submitted. Along with the Fanatic and the Landraider again.

As for the shine, it the picture. I've had a couple of people say they think the skin looks like porcelain. The only parts that are shiny are the wounds and sores.

I fully understand that this might not be everyone cup of tea or pile of poo;)
When I started the Landraider I wanted to do an over the top presentation as opposed to the Nurgle Rhino I did a few years earlier that was alot tamer than the LR. (I'll submit it soon.) Working on the LR was probably one of the most fun I had doing models.
