i dont understand how these guys do this? is is still over the average pay thingy? i think they should all be sacked personally. if the players cant live up to their wages then they should find another job. i dont think this could ever happen in europe. its a big shame for all the fans of the NHL but great for all the local teams who get to see stars play for a decent price

Not much of an NHL hockey fan, but there is still plenty of places to watch hockey here in my neck of the woods.
There are minor leagues, filled with players who play for play, not for money....and seeing the games is cheap 3-4 bucks for a seat!
Professional sports keeps abusing the fans, but somehow the fans (me included w/ the NFL) keep spending money on it...

It\'s funny...when the lockout first started, I was solidly behind the owners/league. Player salaries accounting for such a huge chunk of revenue, etc.
Then at one point Bettman said the reason they were so adamant about the salary cap was because he knew that even if they agreed to the rollback in salaries that the players proposed, one of his owners would completely screw the pooch by the very next off-season and give out some ridiculously high contract.
Now, with the two sides being a paltry (in sports $ terms) 6.5mil apart, they supposedly can\'t work it out?
I hate to say it...but I\'m done with \'em. All of \'em.

Anyone who didn\'t see this coming is blind. I know as an adamant follower of the league that I\'ll be waatching when they return however both sides are to blame for the situation. Either way, good riddance as far as I\'m concerned, 28 games is no where near enoguh time for a legitimate season.
Yeah, i\'m pretty bumbed about it all. And it was about the salary cap (whomever asked that). Hey, Medved, is Ziggy Palffy over playing for Slovakia? He\'s one of my favorite players (him and Luc Robitaille). i\'ve met LOTS of the LA Kings over the years at charity events... sad to see them not playing, but when they weren\'t playing at christmas (roughly the 1/2 way mark of the season) i knew all 82 were lost. My hope is they don\'t loose so much money that they have to dump teams when they open back up. So i went into hockey withdrawals when the season never started... looked at my calendar and saw what game they weren\'t playing... even went out to skate and shot at the street hockey goal. But now... now the air hockey table isn\'t even ASSEMBLED, let alone playing any games. To sad to. Can\'t do it. Hope they play next year... this long off season SUCKS BAD!

I hate to see them screw up hockey this badly, but living right near an AHL franchise, it\'s not so bad. We get to see some players who we\'d never get to see otherwise and, like SVike said, it\'s only a few bucks to see a game. And afterwards, there\'s a club under the ice where you can have a beverage and chaat with some of the players. They even have free pizza and wings sometimes.
What I don\'t get is where these 2 sides feel they have the luxury to disagree like this. They are already #4 of the big 4 sports in the US and even MLS (soccer) is growing faster than they are.
Also, no matter how favorable the deal is for either side, probably only a select few superstars on the \"winning\" side will recoup the losses for this season in their lifetime/carreer.
And there are a number of older players who we may never see again because of this!

Seriously though if they were the #4 professinal sport in America they are not any more. I would think that they might be #7 now behind Nascar, WNBA and Golf. And as Eric said they may even fall behind soccer. It is unfortunate that they could not agree, but that is what happens when GIANT egos go head to head.
So this is for the players and the owners :moon::moon::moon:.

The players should have accepted the 42.5 mill cap. they are never going to get a better offer. The owners are perfectly content to sit on their hands.
The NHL is going to be very different from now on. My canucks are going to lose all thier core players. All I can say is they better lower ticket prices.

Wurzag don\'t be suprised to see the ticket prices get raised in the near future. The owners are going to want to offset the revenue lost during this lockout.

As far as I am concerned, hockey has been unwatchable for years. Without a major televison contact, there just isn\'t the large amount of capital to pay the players the salaries they think that they deserve. On the other side, the reason that there isn\'t a major television deal is because watching modern hockey is about as exciting as watching paint dry. Here is a typical game...faceoff, control puck, clutch and grab at the blue line, dump puck in, chase puck into boards, defense gets control, puck goes back up ice, begin sequence of events again...
The way I see it, the game is doomed until some major changes are made to increase scoring such as calling the interference and holding penalties so that the skill players can actually skate and shoot. Until this happens, hockey will be like soccer on ice with and occasional boxing match, and no offense intended, but not worth my time to watch. Before you slam me for my opinion, I was an avid hockey fan from the days of the Boston Bruins, Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, all the way through Mario Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky, but modern hockey sucks because of both the players and owners. As far as I am concerned, good bye and good riddens unless you both are willing to work to make the game back into what it was.

Dude... the game DOES reward fast skating and good stick handleing. Power forwards are alive and well. i like the rules as they are and the flow of the game. The only thing i don\'t like about the ruling system is they don\'t protect the fast skating good stick handlers out there hence the need for goons and fights. Oh, and i think after the 5 minutes of 4 on 4 for over time they should do a shot out to break the tie

With all due respect, you are missing the point. The present rules allow for less skilled players to clutch and grab the speedy skill players and slow everything down to an icedancing competeion. Goons always were a part of the game since they are necessary to protect your skill players from cheap shots and unwanted pysical retalliation, I have never had a problem with bodyguards at all. What I have a problem with are rules that allow the game to be slowed down to a crawl. I hate watching a game where there are less than half a dozen shots on goal a period. I consider the \"blue line dump\" a shitty way to play. Maybe you aren\'t as old as I am, but in the good old days skill players actually handled the puck and passed it between one another rather than dump it into the corners for the thugs on skates to go wrestle out. This style became common in the mid nineties due to over expansion and a diluted talent base. Look up in your history books, when there were only six teams this style of play NEVER existed. Fights and goons did, and I am OK with that, but back then the zebras didn\'t swallow there whistles in the third period and let everything go short of murder. Like it or not, the good old days are gone. With the current system, low scoring games will be common place, and that my friend is why North American viewers will never embrace this once proud sport. No TV contract. no money, no league, it\'s just that simple.
True, i\'ve always HATED dumping the puck ESPECIALLY during the power play. Let Palffy bring it in. That guy gets RESPECT on the ice especially on the power play. And if one team isn\'t getting 6 shots on goal it sounds like a one sided game so i\'ll bet the other team\'s getting 18 every 20 minutes. Hockey\'s different on the west coast than on the east coast. A lot of those east coast teams are HUGE... i hate watching my Kings play them... they man handle us, but we skate circles around them. That\'s why we\'re such Avalanche killers and don\'t forget the series Detroit got theirs FIRST ROUND in a series that didn\'t even need all 7 games to kick \'em out i\'m just saying that i think skating and skill is still alive, even if it\'s not recognized or talked about and the LA Kings are a good example of it. i don\'t want to get into a flame or whatever it\'s called when people argue over the internet... not what i\'m getting at. Awesome post Itchy! Believe it or not I think we agree. All I am saying is that hockey has alot more wrong with it besides the players and owners agreeing on money, and I sincerely hope that it can be fixed. That is what I wish for in my heart, but my head tells me cancelling the season, and the refusal on both side the address the reasons that fan attendance is down are ultimately dooming the sport. I hope a solution can be worked out, but at this point I am not very hopeful.
PS- I followed the Kings as well. I was a huge Gretsky fan and watched the team often (on TV) after Wayne went Hollywood.
