Night diorama

Thanks a lot Freakinacage, been on this game for many years now but really feel that my skill are just starting to get better! This site is great for that!

Hi folks, hope you are well. Just a quick update. I have replaced the twig with a better looking one (let me know what you all think of this one) and have made an attempt at OSL for the lady, not really sure if its looking good or not so comments most welcome! I am thinking that maybe I watered the compound down too much !

Oh, by the way The reflection on the water on the far right (as you look at it) is just a light reflection i.e. not something I purposefully did lol. Also I have been thinking about black washing then highlighting the ghost (as NGArtStudios had mentioned) but I was wondering whether this would make her look more like a statue than a ghost if I didn\'t pull it off well ?

This looks like a nice little project - I like the scene. I agree with the comments about the tree - what you actually need is not a branch, but the other end of the tree. The roots! If you can find a good root, the finer tendrils make good branches and the scale works well too.

I know you have done a lot of work on this already, but if I\'d spotted this post sooner, I would have suggested you made the water deeper and given the whole scene a more 3D effect by building the jetty up out of the water  Maybe your next scene :D

I\'m not sure if the figure is painted - I couldn\'t tell from your comments and I know she\'s meant to be a ghost. ATM she looks like a primed figure and I think she could benefit from the addition of a colour - even if it\'s only greys to make shadows or show the depth of her visage. Even a mix of blue/green and maybe purple (very watered down ofc) added as washes would make her look complete.

Good luck with getting this finished - I\'m really looking forward to seeing it :D

EDIT: I thought some pics of a recent ghost figure I did might help explain what I mean about using a colour :D

The one on the left is a WIP and the right is the finished figure. Using a colour stops it looking like a statue (something I struggled with when I did this) Hope this helps :D

Not a bad attempt at the glow effect. I think it is looking a bit too milky tho. Seems to have gotten into the cracks of the wood. Give it a few washes with some dark browns and it should look better, followed by a drybrush (I know that\'s a dirty word) of what ever color you are using for the reflections.

As stated before, see if you can find some roots for the tree. It\'s still looking too static imho.

Thanks for posting the updates so frequently, you are coming along very well!

i echo all the above comments, but also, try blending the edges of the osl a little more. atm it just stops, rather that peetering out

ok great thanks for all the excellent comments! You are all very helpful! I will try and hunt down a root (up the woods we go lol) ! With regards to the OSL, I agree with you all, its too milky and there is not enough of a transition between the jettie colouring and the light itself. I will work on this and post an update probably tomorrow, yeah I agree that the ghost also needs a bit more work - again this will happen tomorrow. Thanks again for all your help!

Never mind about tomorrow for updates, lol. I have adjusted the transition for the lighting so it looks more like light than ectoplasm ! See what you think, part of me thinks it could do with another brown wash what do you think ?

I have just given the light a brown and green wash - see what you all think now, c + c most welcome......

That right there is looking great. If you want to intensify it a bit more, just highlight the very raised edges of the wood with the white. All in all though it is looking much better with every update.

Great, I am happier with it now. Quite difficult to get the transition right, its my first attempt at a diaroma and at OSL lol. Couldn\'t have done it without you helpful bunch! Got to fix the ghost herself up now and find a root. Is there anything else you folks think needs some attention ?

I think the light under which the second pic was taken there is just right. But to make the ghost pop out a bit more, I say give her a couple of washes with black, then highlight the extreme edges with pure white, I think that will make her \"pop\" a bit more.

I agree except with the black wash, cause I think it would make her look dingy. but go for the extreme white. itll make it pop like he suggested.

Hi there Tooshy, only just saw your WIP pictures now, abolutely love that ghost! Brilliant colours - how did you get them to look watered down so much like that? Just very fine coats ? Unfortunately it hammered down last night here and still is raining so I will have to wait around to find a root as its very wet ! Will work on the ghost and sent an update in a few hours!

Hello folks, due to the bad weather I decided that I could make my tree less static with green stuff. So I sculpted some vines - see what you think, I think it looks pretty good actually - they look wet because the wash is not dry yet and was in hurry to put up pics. Also, I have added a very faint black wash to her and drybushed skull white onto her - she definately stands out more now!

Hi all, I am thinking of uploading this to the voting system soon so this is really just a query to see if you folks would suggest any improvements before I go ahead, I would like to thank you all for your suggestions and technique tips you are all stars!!!

Looking good. The tree is still bugging me though. The vine idea is definitely an improvement but the vine itself looks too thick now. Having it look thick on the bottom but branch out and thin out towards the top would make it look more realistic I think.

Thanks NGA, you really have a keen eye for detail! Upon further inspection I think the vines look more like snakes! I will have to do something about this! I will update probably tomorrow, I also have a necromunda - ish diorama on the go too. I will be posting a WIP thread on this on monday maybe so check it out if you are interested! Thanks !
