Ninja Goblin - Going for a nine!

Hey all, having finished with GD, I thought I\'d go for my next big target with the hobby - breaking a nine on CMON! I promised I\'d do it by the end of the year to myself, and this is my next attempt at doing so - Sean Green\'s gorgeous Ninja Goblin. I\'m dead chuffed with the airbrush and basic shading/highlighting so far, have a look and tell me what you think, I\'ll be working on him some more tomorrow. I\'m going for a balls-out cartoony look for him, as I think it suits the sculpt, so plenty of bold nmm, sharp contrast and strong shading/highlighting.

This is also my first proper project with oils. I\'m loving teaching myself to use them, they\'re great!

It\'s a cool model! Saw Boristhefrog\'s one done up and I liked it a lot. May have to try one in the future!

Thanks James, glad you like them.

@Scott, it was Boris who I got the model through, and it was hers which inspired me to paint mine the way I am and will. It\'s really good fun so far, which is nice.

@noneedforaname: I got this directly from the sculptor, I believe it\'s not on sale any more, so ebay is your expensive friend.

Looking good so far, maybe just a litle lighter at the end of the nose, a touch of pink in the mix.
How are you thinking of doing the scar?

ach, tbh matey, the scar is painted (aside from a final zenithal highlight) and in \'real life\', when it isn\'t photographed in shadow (the scar on the sculpt is very very deep), it is white-pink-purple-black. Yeah, I\'ll add some more pink glazes to the end top of the bridge of the nose. since I highlighted it white it\'s totally desaturated the pink hue there. Thanks for pointing it out.

Well I\'m really liking the control I get with oil paints at the moment. I can line highlight the length of one of the sharp edges, and then use a little white spirit around the highlights dropped on to \'blur\' the white into the flat of the blade. I\'ve only just started doing this, so please understand that this is a really new thing for me, but it seems to be working really well so far. I love being able to absolutely slap on the paint and wipe it off without worrying about tide marks.

anyway, I\'ll hopefully have some time to work on these tomorrow afternoon :) updates then

ok, so this is the result of 6-8 hrs work... the black on the torso and head is done.

Tomorrow it\'ll be time to do the red patch, belt and round bit on the forehead. Any suggestions for what sort of innane thing I can write in japanese on the scabbard of the katana on his back? I fancy doing some entertaining freehand...

EDIT: since this post I\'ve toned down the highlight on the lower back...yeuch! luckily because they\'re oils all it took was a damp brush to blend some of it away. woo!

Right then, a bizarrely small but fun update :) to take away from all the monotony right now, I thought I\'d paint the patch on the back of his leg. The \'official\' paintjob featured a check pattern, and its something I;ve tried and failed with before now, so after I saw Monkeyman7x\'s avatar yesterday I decided to give him some. I started by blocking out the colours, then it was a matter of highlighting and shading appropriately, with no fade at all. Then it got masked off (I put some pics of maskol \'in action\' mainly so you guys who haven\'t seen it before could get an idea of how it works, painted on, masked off and sprayed, and being peeled off). Then 5 mins with some w&n black ink, and I had my fade. All it took was a 2 min line highlight with fortress grey and bob is quite literally... anyway, there ya go...







ps. sorry about the glare - these were just quick pics - it\'s smoother black coverage than it looks, but the ink is glossy, so until I get a layer of matt on it, there will be a reflection.

Another update before I go to bed:




As you can see, I did the strap. I really love the texture of the strap, it practically paints itself. Who says drybrush is dead? I based it in scorched brown, and drybrushed it with vermin brown, desert yellow and white oil (to tie it in with the rest of the model, which it does well I think :) ). What an awesome sculpt!
