NMM - A daft and pretentious practice

AT-ATs are definately cool, but they have to have worse design flaw ever.

Can you imagine the field testing?

\"They are unstoppable my Lord\"

\"what if someone tries to trip them, with dental floss\"

\"That would never happen\".

It\'s both surely! However nicely painted, it\'s still a three centimetre high green monster impressive in fluff, but not in reality. I reckon that the best single display models are ones whose sculpture and background reflect the fragility of the 28mm scale. For this reason I think eldar and elves are perfect single display models, but a model like a chaos champion that simultaneously says \'I\'m hardcore\' but at the same time \'I\'m only three centimetres tall\' is always going to be a paradox.

Posting my opinions has made me realise how little impact they have had on the opinions of others. I didn\'t do it to offend people, but if I offended you, I don\'t care. Go ahead and cry to momma!

Cock punching is for wimps!

@montka - I guess I don\'t really understand your recent point, please enlighten me. If a single display mini is effeminate or fragile because it is small, how is an army comprised of minis any different? They are still small, just more of them. Apparently you do not think the type of mini makes a difference, but rather whether it is solitary or not. If that is the case, you would like any pictured mini as long as the background is comprised of some sort of army, yes?

Effeminate?
Now that you mention it, those space marines by Eavy Metal are a bit Tom of Finland like!
:twisted::twisted::twisted::twisted::twisted:
oh com\'on: why effeminate???

Ok, I have realised I got a little carried away with my rhetoric when I wrote the above posts, and the language was way over the top. (All were written at unmentionable hours of the morning.) Sorry to have caused offense.

I do however, stand by the conclusions I have reached. A single space marine is small, and therefore not powerful, thus there is a paradox between the idea the art is supposed to evoke (strength, and power), and what effect it actually has on the observer - small, pretty object. I like forge world busts and large scale pieces as one has more opportunity to display expression in the model\'s face for more dramatic impact. I guess my main gripe was with the limitations of the scale after all, not NMM, and I brought in NMM as a side issue.

@Treide
I\'m just saying a nicely painted army is really substantial and impressive in its scale, whereas a single mini isn\'t, and is often more about showing off technical skill.

People have been fascinated by small things for a very long time! The ability to depict something in a very small scale is impressive in its own right! I believe that through skill, both in sculpting and in painting, you can make a small thing appear powerful by creating enough atmosphere and liveliness in the miniature and its setting. I have held pieces by some of the best miniature painters, in this genre of painting, in my hand and trust me when I say that they do look powerful and impressive! Of course the skill has a lot to do with it, but it\'s the means and not the end, IMO. It\'s what you do with your skill that counts and not the skill itself.

No offense taken :beer::beer:, I just couldn\'t see why you had chosen that word.
But now I get it: you used \"effeminate\" when you meant something like \"fussy\" or \"hair splitting\".

Sorry, my english vocab is limited.
Then again beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I once showed a pic of a farseer by one of the major painters on cmon to a colleague who is into soccer, and he said: \"yeah, nice, so where do we go for lunch?\"
I could have shown him a mini painted by an hyperactive 8 years old and he would not have szeen the difference!
So of course, because I paint I see details that people will not notice, and I know how nmm works, how difficult it is, when most people would not even notice it.
Still - a lot of people love minis. My husband is not at all into painting minis, but he steal my white dwarf every month to look at the gorgeous pictures.
.... come to think of it perhaps it has to do with the fact he hates soccer???:beer:

\"I is wet and cold\"

\"Now mom, I know this looks bad but honestly all I did was to break a few windows.. please let me in!\"

Now that is a reasonable arguement, and I totally agree with you on this. You can really go to town on larger stuff and it does have greater impact but that\'s purely down to scale I think.

now this is a lot more civilised....
It is true that busts and larger scales do allow a somewhat more expressive level to be achieved so when people manage it on a mall scale that\'s more Kudos to them...

Sorry to resurrect a thread that has pissed people off, but I would like to make one last point. On the one hand I think that however beautiful a single 28mm model is, it will only be able to do so much, and hold interest for so long.

However, on the other hand I have realised that a *collection* of single minis painted to display standard is another matter. I think that such a work will have the required scale to excite a lot of interest. Having a lot of 28mm scale display models also has the advantage of enabling one to have display a variety of ideas and colour schemes, which is another advantage.

When I wrote the thread that sparked the conflict I was about to embark on painting a single mini to a very high standard, but I wasn\'t able to commit myself to the project without a long think in advance about whether it would be worth the time and effort. Having seen other peoples opinions and being forced to develop my own more coherently has really helped me to see where the beauty in miniatures painting lies, but also to see its limitations.
