Well since PJ cocked up lotr IMO anyway, no complaints from me! :D

Ah! How can you say this and be from New Zealand? Isn\'t that against the law there?

Why do you think that anyhow?

I admit, the movies don\'t hold a candle to the books, but I think he captured the \'flavor\' of them.

The news about that second prequel makes me even more doubtful about this whole thing... That\'s clearly a way of cashing in and I see no real point in it.
What could they possibly mean?
The story of Smaegol?
Perhaps they would do a movie of the whole Silmarillian.
I\'m kidding of course, but there is plenty in there to make a few smaller scale films.

@vince
My point is, that if they were to use Silmarillion to make a second prequel how could they possibly make that into a solid, coherent feature length dramatic film? Gollum? His story is told in brief terms in the LOTR films so I don\'t think there\'s much to make an entire film about there...

GW have expanded on a load of fluff from the books.

Sauron as the Necromancer..........they could possibly take little bit\'s like that about the build up to LOTR and create a film that way.

I think the other film they are mentioning is the events leading up to the prologue in FOTR or even up to where the ring is found again.

I heard Wesley Snipes is going to play Bilbo and they\'re shooting the entire film in Namibia (where he is hiding for tax purposes). Baz Luhrman will direct and Claire Danes will play \"the Goblin King\".

Um, that\'s the Hobbit.

A movie of the last alliance? Sort of the beginning of the first movie already.
A movie about the Tolkein creation myth? Now that would be interesting, but probably only to a very few fanatics.

I think several of the Silmarillion stories could work well in film - the story of Beren & Luthien, as well as the Turin Turambar story come to mind. Most of the others would be difficult to adapt for mass appeal.

Yeah, I am a Tolkien geek.

Well I\'m hoping that this is just a continuation in the crazy battle for the rights to the Hobbit and PJ could still be involved. The amount of nonsense that seems to be going on, you could probably make an entertaining movie about the struggle to get the Hobbit filming.

Somehow I get a vision of Ari Gold from Entourage involved somewhere suggesting \'Lets hug it out bitch!\'

I completely disagree that he wouldn\'t be as suited to the more whimsical nature of the Hobbit too, I think he\'d thrive on it. I mean the best bit of all the LoTR films for me is probably the idylic perfection of Hobbiton, and even when he is doing horror or freakyness in things like Bad Taste, Braindead or The Frightners there is a massive undercurrent of humour and tongue in cheek fun.

I also think he vastly improved on the books with the films. Took all the great ideas Tolkien had and added some decent writing and character arcs that made more sense, but that\'s just me.

I certainly don\'t mean to imply that PJ could not do The Hobbit justice - I\'m sure it would be fine. I think there is nothing wrong with letting some other accomplished person try their hand at it, though.

Careful about criticizing Tolkien\'s books - saying the movies improved vastly on his works would invite certain death from some rabid purists (I\'m not one of them).

I thoroughly enjoyed the films, but some of the changes were hard to stomach. For example, reducing Gimli to comic relief, Legolas \"shield-surfing\", elves showing up at Helm\'s deep, the Osgiliath scene where Frodo almost gives up the Ring to a Nazgul and then Faramir sends him on his merry way. There are others, but I don\'t want this to be misinterpreted as a rant. Tolkien\'s books were great, but not perfect. The films were great, but not perfect.

If certain death is what I have to suffer for my beliefs than so be it!:D

Gimli, I rather enjoyed his comedy, and there was always the potential for brutallity there too. I guess I see my dwarves as slightly comedic. The shield surfing, aye, not so cool! Elves showing up at Helm\'s Deep, I really liked that, but that just shows I\'m not such a purist.

The Faramir bit though, that was a change for the better in my mind. He felt like a real character that made much more sense in the films. He showed that even though the ring is all powerful, pure evil and terribly desirable, that there was enough good and faith in him that he could resist it when he saw the valliant struggle of the Hobbits to protect it. He kind of served a Bombadilish role for me in a way, because lets face it, there\'s no way you could have had that psycadellic nutter in there, by showing that not everyone is prone to the corruption.

Certainly made much more sense to me than in the book where he just goes \'nah, I can live without the ring\'.

But yeah, the books were great but not perfect. The films were great but not perfect.

As long as they get Johnny Depp to play Gollum I\'ll still go to see it. :D

As far as two prequels, I would say they are going to split the Hobbit in half. They could add a little (15 minutes?) in the beginning about Smeagol, Then turn the clock forward some 400 years to Bilbo. Have the first one end after he gets the ring, escapes the cave, and from the cliff face he looks upon Mirkwood in the distance in dread.

Then Part II is all about Mirkwood, Spiders, Elves, Rivermen, Smaug and the battle of 5 armies.

Basically what they did to Back to the future 2 & 3, take one long movie and cut it in half.

They could even split it into 3 if they wanted to be really greedy, with all that happens in Mirkwood just being the second one, and Smaug and the 5 armies being a seperate third.

But that might be stretching it out too much.

Hey! I Know, they could do one of those cross-over films, like Freddy vs. Jason! So which would you guys vote for, Sauron vs. Aslan or Frodo vs. Harry Potter?

How about the Dawn Treader (Narnia) vs. The Black Pearl? I just can\'t seem to get enough capt. Jack Sparrow.

How about Gandalf vs Dumbledore? The great wizards with their great hats and greater beards! Taking all bets!

(Rowling so ripped off Gandalf\'s image for Dumbledore).

Please god, no. Hobbit and LOTR, fine. Everything else? BORING! Especially all the crud his son wrote from a few whispy notes by his old man....

I agree...I\'ve tried to make my way through any of those \'unfinished\' tales....

Great fluff material...great gaming background....but not novel worthy.
