Obsidian Painting: Obsidian Paint!

So, i figured i'd post it here, so that way i can post updates on how i'm coming along with this project.

For those of you who don't know, i plan on making paint. The ideal goal is to be able to sell it, if not, then i have my own paint for cheap!

I will be making a few different "lines"

1. Acrylic paint.
2. Washes
3. Glazes
4. Airbrush ready paint
5. Slow drying paint(ready for wetblending)

The first project i'm doing is Washes.
I placed an order to get the proper chemicals(i assume everything is non-toxic, as i have not read otherwise)

And fed ex's tracking system told me it should be here by 5:00 (this is EST as i right this is it 3:00)

If it doesn't arrive i won't be upset, as fed ex also said it was just shipped out last night at like 3:00 in the morning. So with customs i can't see it coming today. But if it does i will be pleasantly surprised!

So here is the idea for the washes. They are to dry Matte. Like Super Matte!(By the way, i had a thread in the general discussion forum that talked about what kind of paints everyone would like to see. If you have any suggestions or comments don't be afraid to post them. I wanted to make this paint line FOR painters, so any input is appreciated. i.e likes and dislikes about paints) They dry ultra matte, have good coverage, and.. thats about it! Hopefully they don't taste too bad!

The paints themselves are also going to be matte,(to stay coherent throughout the paint line) and also, because this is how i want to do it, We will also do custom colours. If you have a colour your running out of, then send it to us and we'll make a batch. A colour swatch will also work. On top of that. We will also be selling paint in various quantities. ranging from 5ml through to 240 ml.

In the paintline itself, i only plan on making around 7 or so paints. All the basic paint colours, red, yellow, blue, purple, green, orange, a brown, black and white. Then just make custom colours after that.

What do you guys think?

I'll be posting again tonight with a progress on wether or not the shipment arrived.

I am eager to try your washes, glazes, and such. As for the paint's proper I am a lazy man and I don't like mixing paint too much. I bet most around here have 100's of colours at their disposal. I am sure I have 20 plus greens.

My point is I don't know how well a line fo only 7 core paint's will fly. Certainly as a starter set and such but I think that if you want to appeal to as many hobbyists as possible more paint range may be in order.

But I will try your stuff when available! I promise that!

It's a new era with so many people starting their own lines of mini's and now seeing someone try to produce something from this side of the hobby is interesting as well. Good luck!

Well the idea was 7 to start. Then offer paint sets. Like.. A blue set that goes from REALLY Dark blue(think midnight blue mixed with black) all the way up to something like ice blue mixed with white. For paint sets. Then on top of that we will always be doing the custom paints. So we could easily mix up a set of greens if you wanted. (Think of the andrea paint sets, but for every colour?)

However, first we need to get the formulation down. I'm waiting on some pigments to come in, then i need to get the proper ingredients to mix. Theres alot that goes into this, and when i first started this, i didn't know it was going to need to so many things. But i'm glad i know now, and it really makes painting more enjoyable even. Knowing how everything works. And mixing has always been a love of mine, which is why i am offering the custom colours.

anyways, i'm glad to hear that! Once we get the first batch of washes made, i need some people to test them out, i already have a few from the the other thread, but seeing how your in canada, it'd probably be really easy to ship you a test batch!

I've only ever used GW paints because they're the only thing the local shop carries, but I do want to try new paints. I might be willing to give yours a go.

Sounds interesting.

I'd like to give yours a shot once you get something put together.

Like Prophecy07, I'm always looking for a yellow that gets good coverage without being too mustardy... I like the color of golden yellow, but every brand that makes it that I've found, the coverage is complete crap.

Yellow is one of the worst paints in the universe. The problems are that in order to get a smooth coverage you need to dilute, but yellow will not even cover yellow! If you want it to cover you are stuck with a glue like paint that will dry lumpy.GW's foundation paint is by far the best yellow, but it isn't very bright. So a nice bright yellow that can be diluted to cover smoothly. It's not alot to ask!

I'll see what i can do! I got the package in, I'm just waiting for the chemicals to come to room temperature. I also decided to order some brushes from DickBlick, Raphael, Winsor and newton series 7 and miniature. So i may do a Comparison on them in the painting section.

I'll Give you guys a heads up once i get some washes created!

So.... The brown didn't turn out the way i thought it would! lol oh well.

The black turned out good though. I suppose i just need a more reddy brown, as this one came out yellowy and kinda gross! I'll get some more ink for that.

Anyways, here is a picture of the ink. I just threw this together. I may refine it some more.

The body is done in My Wash, and the cloth part is done with Badab Black from Games Workshop.

Update:

Ok so, i've reformulated it a little more. On the Shaggoth it came out a little too thick, and didn't really flow. So i readjusted the formulation and now it flows quite well.

So here are some pics:

It seems to flow perfectly over the mini, and into the recesses, leaving the recesses Darker. It does however, seem to tint the entire area. Which will just add to the Gradation. These are over a White Primer undercoat. And also it dries 100% Matte.

The photos have close to two coverages. Most parts are only one though. Like the skin.
